Part 1: Detailed English Commentary & Explanation
1. Historical and Contextual Background
The First Epistle to the Corinthians was written by the Apostle Paul to the believers residing in the cosmopolitan city of Corinth around AD 53–55. The Church at Corinth was remarkably gifted by the Holy Spirit, yet it struggled with internal divisions, spiritual pride, and disorder during public worship gatherings.
In chapters 12 through 14, Paul addresses the proper function and purpose of spiritual gifts (charismata). In chapter 12, he highlights the diversity of gifts unified under one Body of Christ. In chapter 13, he establishes love as the supreme principle governing all spiritual activity. By chapter 14, Paul focuses directly on public worship, comparing the gifts of tongues and prophecy to emphasize clarity, order, and mutual benefit over individual spiritual pride.
Verse 12 acts as a pivotal summary directive. Paul does not condemn their enthusiasm (zeal) for spiritual manifestations; rather, he redirects their focus toward a higher goal: the collective growth and strengthening of the congregation.
2. Phrase-by-Phrase Exegetical Breakdown
A. “Even so ye…”
Paul bridges his previous illustration regarding musical instruments and unintelligible speech to the believers’ practical spiritual life. Just as a musical instrument must produce a clear, distinct sound to be useful, a believer’s expression of spiritual gifts must produce clear, intelligible benefits for the community.
B. “…forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts…”
The word “zealous” stems from the Greek root zelotes, meaning passionately devoted, enthusiastic, or burning with desire. The Corinthians possessed an intense desire for supernatural spiritual manifestations. Paul validates their passion—having zeal for spiritual matters is not inherently wrong—but highlights that zeal without proper direction leads to chaos and selfishness.
C. “…seek that ye may excel…”
The Greek word for “excel” (perisseuo) means to overflow, abound, or possess in abundance. Paul encourages believers to direct their spiritual ambition toward excellence. However, this excellence is not measured by personal status, miraculous displays, or human praise, but by how effectively their gifts serve others.
D. “…to the edifying of the church.”
The core message of the verse rests on the word “edifying” (Greek: oikodome), an architectural term meaning “to build up a structure.” The “church” (ekklesia) refers to the assembly of believers. Therefore, Paul instructs that every spiritual manifestation must contribute to building up the spiritual strength, faith, unity, and understanding of the local congregation.
3. Key Theological Themes and Practical Applications
-
Redirection of Desire: Ambition in the kingdom of God is redefined. True spiritual maturity shifts focus from “What gift exalts me?” to “What gift builds up my brother and sister in faith?”
-
Clarity and Order in Worship: Spiritual gifts are meant to communicate God’s truth clearly. Unintelligible or chaotic displays hinder believers and confuse seekers.
-
The Principle of Love in Action: Building upon 1 Corinthians 13, edifying others is love expressed through spiritual service. Love seeks the benefit of the community over personal satisfaction.
-
Self-Evaluation for Believers: Every believer is called to ask: Is my involvement in the church building people up or causing confusion and strife?
Part 2: Detailed Urdu Commentary & Explanation (تفصیلی اردو تفسیر و تشریح)
1 text of the verse (آیت کا متن)
1 کرنتھیوں 14:12 “اسی طرح تم بھی جب روحانی نعمتوں کے مشتاق ہو تو ایسی کوشش کرو کہ کلیسیا کی ترقی کے لیے تمہاری نعمتوں میں فراوانی ہو۔”
2. تاریخی اور سیاق و سباق کا پس منظر (Historical and Contextual Background)
(Detailed Verse Commentary)
الف۔ “اسی طرح تم بھی…” (Even so ye…)
پولس رسول نے اس سے پہلے سازوں اور آوازوں کی مثال دی تھی کہ اگر بگل سے صاف اور واضح آواز نہ نکلے تو جنگ کی تیاری کون کرے گا؟ اسی طرح، اگر ہماری روحانی نعمتوں کا استعمال کلیسیا کی سمجھ میں نہ آئے تو اس کا کوئی فائدہ نہیں ہوتا۔
ب۔ “…جب روحانی نعمتوں کے مشتاق ہو…” (zealous of spiritual gifts)
تمہاری نعمتوں میں فراوانی ہو” (seek that ye may excel)
یہاں پولس ایمانداروں کو یہ ہدایت دیتے ہیں کہ وہ اپنی روحانی نعمتوں کو بڑھانے اور ان میں کمال حاصل کرنے کی کوشش کریں۔ لیکن یہ برتری یا فراوانی ذاتی شہرت، فخر یا نمائش کے لیے نہیں ہونی چاہیے، بلکہ اس کا بنیادی مقصد دوسروں کی خدمت ہونا چاہیے۔
د۔ “…کلیسیا کی ترقی کے لیے” (to the edifying of the church)
(Practical Lessons & Spiritual Truths)
-
