Complete Explanation in English
“If we confess our sins”
The verse begins with the words, “If we confess our sins.” To confess means to acknowledge honestly what we have done wrong. Biblical confession involves admitting our sins before God instead of making excuses, blaming others, or pretending that our actions were acceptable.
Everyone makes mistakes and falls short of God’s righteousness. The important question is how we respond when we recognize our wrongdoing.
Confession requires humility. Instead of saying, “I did nothing wrong,” a person can come before God and say, in effect, “I have sinned, and I need Your forgiveness.”
True confession is more than simply saying words. It involves recognizing sin for what it is and turning toward God. When someone sincerely confesses, he is acknowledging his dependence upon God’s mercy and grace.
“He is faithful”
The next part says that “he is faithful.”
This describes God’s character. Human beings can change their minds, break promises, or disappoint one another, but God is presented in Scripture as faithful and trustworthy.
When a person comes to God with genuine confession, he does not need to wonder whether God will keep His promise of forgiveness. God’s faithfulness means that His character does not change according to our emotions or circumstances.
Sometimes people feel that their sins are too serious to be forgiven. Other times, they may feel unworthy to approach God. This verse directs attention away from human feelings and toward God’s faithfulness.
The foundation of forgiveness is not human perfection. It is God’s gracious character and His provision for forgiveness.
“And just”
John also says that God is “just.”
At first, the word “just” may seem surprising when discussing forgiveness. Yet the verse teaches that God’s forgiveness is not careless or unjust. God does not simply pretend that sin does not matter.
The wider message of the New Testament connects forgiveness with the saving work of Jesus Christ. Earlier in 1 John, the writer speaks about the blood of Jesus Christ cleansing believers from sin. Therefore, 1 John 1:9 should be understood within the larger Christian teaching about Christ’s sacrifice and God’s plan of redemption.
God’s justice and mercy are not presented as enemies. Through Christ, Christians understand forgiveness as part of God’s righteous and gracious work.
“To forgive us our sins”
The promise continues: God is able “to forgive us our sins.”
Forgiveness means that the guilt of sin is not something a repentant believer must carry forever. God offers reconciliation rather than leaving a person permanently separated from Him.
This does not mean that consequences of earthly actions always disappear immediately. A person may still need to apologize, repair damage, accept consequences, or change harmful behavior. Forgiveness before God and the practical consequences of our actions are related but not identical.
The verse gives hope because failure does not have to be the final chapter of a person’s spiritual life.
When someone sincerely confesses, forgiveness provides an opportunity to begin again. It encourages the believer not to remain trapped in guilt but to return to God with humility and faith.
“And to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”
The verse goes beyond forgiveness. It also promises cleansing from all unrighteousness.
Forgiveness addresses guilt, while cleansing points toward God’s transforming work in a person’s life. God does not merely tell people that their sins are forgiven; He also calls them to walk differently.
The expression “all unrighteousness” is important. It reminds believers that God’s cleansing is not limited to only the sins they consider small or acceptable. God knows the whole person.
This should encourage honest confession. We do not have to hide particular failures from God because He already knows everything.
Cleansing is also a reminder that Christian growth is a continuing process. Believers are called to turn away from sinful behavior and increasingly live according to God’s truth.
