Detailed Explanation in English

“And every man that hath this hope in him”

The verse begins with the words, “And every man that hath this hope in him.” The “hope” mentioned here connects with the previous teaching concerning the future appearance of Jesus Christ and the transformation of believers.

Christian hope is different from simply wishing that something might happen. Biblical hope is a confident expectation based upon the promises of God. The believer looks forward to Christ’s coming and to the fulfillment of God’s promises.

This hope gives a Christian a future perspective. Life in the present world can contain difficulties, disappointments, temptations, and uncertainty. However, the believer’s ultimate hope is not based upon temporary circumstances. It is centered upon Jesus Christ and the promise of eternal fellowship with Him.

John therefore teaches that the expectation of Christ’s return should have an effect on everyday life.

“Purifieth himself”

The next part says that the person who has this hope “purifieth himself.”

Purification here refers to pursuing a life that is morally and spiritually clean. It does not mean that a person earns salvation by making himself perfect. Salvation is based upon God’s grace and the work of Jesus Christ.

Rather, purification describes the response of a person who genuinely belongs to Christ.

A Christian who understands God’s holiness becomes increasingly concerned about sin. Instead of treating sin casually, the believer seeks to turn away from sinful attitudes, thoughts, words, and actions.

This purification can involve repentance, prayer, obedience to God’s Word, forgiveness, humility, love, and a sincere desire to please God.

The Christian life is therefore not simply about believing certain truths intellectually. Faith should influence character and conduct.

“Even as he is pure”

John gives the standard for this purification: “even as he is pure.”

The ultimate example is Jesus Christ. Christ is presented throughout John’s writings as pure and righteous. His character provides the pattern toward which believers should strive.

This does not mean that Christians become completely sinless or equal to Christ in their present earthly lives. Instead, it means that Christ’s purity becomes the pattern for Christian living.

A believer should ask questions such as:

  • Does my behavior reflect the character of Christ?
  • Am I trying to turn away from sinful practices?
  • Do my words demonstrate love and truth?
  • Am I willing to forgive others?
  • Do I seek to obey God’s Word?
  • Does my hope in Christ affect the choices I make?

These questions help demonstrate how the truth of 1 John 3:3 can become practical.

Hope Produces Holiness

One of the central lessons of this verse is that Christian hope should produce holiness.

Sometimes people think that thinking about the future means ignoring the present. John teaches the opposite. The expectation of Christ’s return should motivate believers to live faithfully today.

If a person truly expects to meet Christ and hopes to share in His glory, that expectation should encourage a life of purity.

This gives Christian holiness a positive foundation. Purity is not merely about avoiding wrongdoing. It is about becoming increasingly devoted to God and reflecting the character of Jesus Christ.

Purification Is a Continuing Process

The wording of the verse also points toward an ongoing way of life. Christian growth does not happen all at once.

A believer may recognize areas of weakness and bring them before God. Through repentance, prayer, Scripture, and obedience, the believer continues growing.

This process requires humility. Christians should not assume that they have reached spiritual perfection. Instead, they should continually seek God’s guidance and allow His Word to shape their lives.

When a believer fails, the proper response is not hopelessness. The gospel points the believer back to Jesus Christ, repentance, forgiveness, and renewed obedience.

The Relationship Between Hope and Daily Conduct

1 John 3:3 teaches that what a person expects in the future can influence how that person lives today.

If Christian hope is centered on Jesus Christ, then present priorities begin to change. Temporary worldly achievements become less important than faithfulness to God. The believer becomes more concerned with character, love, truth, righteousness, and obedience.

This makes the verse highly practical.

Christian hope should influence how we speak to family members, how we treat friends, how we respond when someone hurts us, how honestly we behave, and how we handle temptation.

The future promise of Christ’s coming therefore becomes a motivation for faithful living in the present.
