“Let No Man Deceive You”

John begins with a direct warning: “Let no man deceive you.”

Deception can happen when people teach ideas that sound spiritual but do not agree with the truth of Scripture. During the early Christian period, different teachings about Jesus, sin, righteousness, and salvation were circulating among believers. John therefore encourages Christians to examine what they hear rather than accepting every teaching without discernment.

This warning remains meaningful for Christians today. Not every religious statement is necessarily biblical simply because it sounds convincing. Believers are encouraged to compare teaching with Scripture and to consider whether it points people toward faithful obedience to Christ.

Christian discernment is not about judging people harshly. Rather, it means being careful about what we believe and allowing the truth of God’s Word to guide our understanding.

“He That Doeth Righteousness Is Righteous”

The next part of the verse says:

“He that doeth righteousness is righteous.”

John connects righteousness with conduct. A person who has genuinely received God’s grace should desire to live according to God’s ways.

This does not mean that Christians become perfect or never make mistakes. Earlier in 1 John, John clearly acknowledges the reality of sin and points believers toward confession and forgiveness. “Even as he is righteous.”

Jesus demonstrated righteousness through His obedience, love, truth, humility, compassion, and complete faithfulness to the Father. His life provides the pattern for Christian character.

This phrase also reminds believers that Christian righteousness is ultimately connected to Christ. Christians should not look at their own achievements and become proud. Instead, they should recognize Christ as the perfect standard and continually seek to become more like Him.

Righteousness and Christian Faith
