English Explanation of 1 John 4:18

“There is no fear in love”

John begins with a powerful statement: “There is no fear in love.”

The love being discussed here is not merely human affection. The surrounding passage speaks about the love that comes from God. Earlier in this chapter, John teaches that God is love and that God demonstrated His love by sending His Son.

When a person understands that God truly loves him, the relationship with God can move from fear to trust. A believer does not have to approach God as though God is looking for every possible reason to reject him.

This does not mean that reverence for God disappears. Scripture encourages believers to honor and respect God. However, there is an important difference between reverence and a terrifying expectation of punishment.

God’s love produces confidence because His character is trustworthy.

“But perfect love casteth out fear”

The phrase “perfect love” refers to love brought to maturity or completeness. John is describing the transforming effect of God’s love in the life of a believer.

God’s love does not encourage a person to remain trapped in fear. Instead, understanding His love can push fear out of the center of a person’s relationship with Him.

Imagine someone who constantly thinks, “God will surely reject me,” or “I can never come near God.” Such thoughts can create spiritual fear and insecurity. The message of 1 John is that believers can know and trust the love that God has shown through Jesus Christ.

Perfect love therefore changes the way a person approaches God.

The believer begins to understand:

  • God is loving and faithful.
  • God has demonstrated His love through Christ.
  • God does not desire believers to live in constant terror.
  • God’s love gives spiritual confidence.
  • A believer can approach God with trust.

“Because fear hath torment”

John gives the reason that perfect love casts out fear: “because fear hath torment.”

The word “torment” describes the painful effect of fear. Fear can disturb the heart and mind. A person who constantly expects punishment may struggle to experience peace.

This is particularly important when considering the context of judgment. Earlier in the passage, John speaks about having confidence “in the day of judgment.” The believer does not have to live as though judgment is an unavoidable source of terror.

Fear of judgment can become tormenting when a person has no confidence in God’s mercy and love. But the gospel presents another reality: God has revealed His love through Jesus Christ.

The Christian message is therefore not simply, “Try harder so that God might accept you.” It points believers toward the love God has already demonstrated.

“He that feareth is not made perfect in love”

John concludes by saying that the person who fears is not made perfect in love.

This does not mean that every moment of fear proves that someone has no faith. Christians can experience fear, uncertainty, and difficult emotions. Rather, John is describing an ongoing spiritual condition in which fear of punishment remains dominant.

Christian maturity involves increasingly understanding and living in God’s love.

As believers grow in that understanding, fear does not need to control their relationship with God. They can become more confident in His character and promises.

This verse therefore encourages spiritual growth. The goal is not simply to know that God loves humanity intellectually, but to allow that truth to shape the way we live.

What Does 1 John 4:18 Teach Us About God’s Love?

The verse teaches several important lessons.

1. God’s love gives confidence

God’s love changes the believer’s relationship with Him. Instead of constantly expecting rejection, believers can place their trust in God.

2. Fear can become spiritually destructive

Fear can dominate a person’s thoughts and prevent them from experiencing peace. John describes fear as having “torment” because it can produce deep inner distress.

3. Perfect love produces spiritual maturity

The word “perfect” points toward completeness and maturity. God’s love is not defective or incomplete. As believers understand His love more deeply, their faith can become stronger.

4. Christians can have confidence before God

The surrounding verses connect love with confidence in the day of judgment. This confidence is not based on human perfection. It is connected with God’s love and what He has accomplished through Jesus Christ.

5. Love changes how we treat others

The passage does not stop with receiving God’s love. Earlier in 1 John, believers are repeatedly encouraged to love one another. Experiencing God’s love should influence how Christians treat family members, friends, neighbors, and other people.

Practical Application of 1 John 4:18

1 John 4:18 can be applied to everyday Christian life.

When fear of judgment or rejection becomes overwhelming, remember what Scripture says about God’s love. Instead of allowing fear to become the foundation of your relationship with God, seek to understand His character and His promises.

When you make mistakes, do not conclude that God has stopped loving you. Confess your sins, seek forgiveness, and continue walking with Him.

When facing uncertainty, remember that faith is based on trusting God even when circumstances are difficult.

The verse also challenges believers to examine whether fear is controlling their spiritual lives. Healthy Christian living is not supposed to be built around constant terror. God’s love invites believers into a relationship characterized by trust, obedience, confidence, and love.

1 John 4:18 and Christian Life
