Meaning of “We Are of God”

The statement “We are of God” identifies the source and authority of John’s message. John and the other faithful apostles were proclaiming the teaching they had received concerning Jesus Christ.

To be “of God” means to belong to God and to stand within the truth revealed by Him. It is not merely a statement about religious identity. It involves faithfulness to God’s truth and obedience to the teaching of Jesus Christ.

John’s purpose is to help believers understand that spiritual claims must be tested. Someone may claim to speak for God, but the claim itself does not make the teaching true. The message must be examined according to the truth of the Gospel.

“He That Knoweth God Heareth Us”

John continues, “he that knoweth God heareth us.”

Here, “heareth” means more than simply hearing sounds. It carries the idea of listening, receiving, and responding to the apostolic teaching.

A person who truly knows God should have a willingness to receive God’s truth. This does not mean that every Christian understands everything immediately or never has questions. Rather, it describes a heart that is willing to submit to God’s truth instead of deliberately rejecting it.

John connects knowing God with recognizing and receiving the truth about Jesus Christ. Genuine knowledge of God therefore affects a person’s beliefs, choices, attitudes, and way of life.

“He That Is Not of God Heareth Not Us”

The second part presents the contrast:

“he that is not of God heareth not us.”

John explains that rejection of the apostolic message reveals a serious spiritual problem. If someone consistently refuses the truth concerning Christ and rejects the teaching given by the apostles, that response demonstrates that the person is not walking according to God’s truth.

This statement should not be interpreted as permission to reject everyone who disagrees with us. Christians must distinguish between personal opinions and essential Gospel truth.

John’s concern is specifically about the message concerning Jesus Christ and the truth of the Gospel. The verse therefore calls believers to remain anchored in Scripture rather than following every new spiritual teaching or religious claim.

The Spirit of Truth

John then gives the conclusion:

“Hereby know we the spirit of truth.”

The spirit of truth is associated with what agrees with God’s revealed truth. In the wider context of 1 John, truth is closely connected with the correct confession concerning Jesus Christ.

The Christian faith is not based simply on emotions, extraordinary experiences, or impressive spiritual claims. Truth matters.

A teaching should therefore be examined carefully:

  • Does it agree with Scripture?
  • Does it accurately confess Jesus Christ?
  • Does it lead people toward obedience to God?
  • Does it agree with the apostolic Gospel?
  • Does it produce a life consistent with Christian truth?

These questions help believers avoid deception.

The Spirit of Error

John also mentions “the spirit of error.”

Error means departure from the truth. In the context of this letter, John is warning believers about teachings that distort the identity and work of Jesus Christ.

The spirit of error can appear attractive or convincing. False teaching does not always announce itself as false. That is why Christians are instructed to test spiritual claims rather than accepting them automatically.

This teaching remains important because people encounter many religious ideas, opinions, teachings, and spiritual claims. Discernment requires knowledge of God’s Word and careful attention to the Gospel.

Truth Must Be Tested

One of the important lessons of 1 John 4:6 is that believers should practice spiritual discernment.

John does not tell Christians to believe every person who claims spiritual authority. Earlier in the chapter, he instructs believers to test the spirits. The reason is that many false prophets have gone into the world.

Christian maturity therefore includes the ability to distinguish truth from error.

A believer should not judge teaching merely by popularity, emotional appeal, confidence, or impressive presentation. Instead, the teaching should be measured against the truth of Scripture and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Knowing God Changes How We Listen

This verse also teaches that knowing God affects how we respond to truth.

A person who knows God should have a desire to hear and follow His truth. Christian faith is not simply intellectual agreement. It involves trust, obedience, and a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

When God’s truth challenges our preferences, we should not automatically reject it. Instead, we should humbly examine ourselves and ask whether our beliefs and actions are consistent with Scripture.

The Importance of the Apostolic Message

The phrase “heareth us” is important because John is emphasizing the authority of the apostolic witness.

The apostles were witnesses to Jesus Christ and proclaimed the Gospel concerning Him. Their teaching provides the foundation for the Christian message preserved in the New Testament.

Therefore, 1 John 4:6 encourages Christians to remain connected to the authentic Gospel rather than following teachings that contradict it.

The verse reminds believers that spiritual discernment is not based on personal preference. God’s truth provides the standard.

Practical Lessons from 1 John 4:6

1. Not Every Spiritual Message Is True

People may make spiritual claims, but Christians should test those claims carefully.

2. Scripture Is Essential for Discernment

Knowing God’s Word helps believers recognize teachings that agree with or contradict biblical truth.

3. Knowing God Involves Receiving Truth

A genuine relationship with God should produce a willingness to listen to and follow His truth.

4. Believers Should Avoid Spiritual Deception

Christians should not accept teachings simply because they sound impressive or popular.

5. Jesus Christ Must Remain Central

The surrounding passage emphasizes the truth about Jesus Christ. Any teaching that changes the biblical message about Christ should be examined carefully.

6. Truth and Error Are Not the Same

John presents a clear distinction between the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. Christians are therefore called to develop spiritual discernment.
