Detailed Explanation in English

“He that believeth on the Son of God”

The verse begins with the person who believes in the Son of God. In the writings of John, believing is more than simply knowing that Jesus existed. It involves trusting Him and accepting the truth concerning His identity and work.

The expression “Son of God” is especially important in John’s teaching. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus is presented as the Son sent by the Father. John repeatedly emphasizes that Jesus came from God and that believing in Him is central to receiving eternal life.

Faith therefore involves accepting God’s testimony concerning Jesus Christ. It means trusting what God has revealed rather than relying only on human reasoning or personal opinion.

“Hath the witness in himself”

John then says that the believer “hath the witness in himself.” This refers to the inward testimony associated with faith in Christ. God’s truth becomes personally received by the believer.

The surrounding passage speaks about witnesses and testimony. John has already described the Spirit, the water, and the blood as witnesses. He then points to God’s testimony concerning His Son. The believer does not merely hear this testimony externally; through faith, its truth becomes an inward reality.

This does not mean that Christians should depend exclusively upon their emotions. The foundation remains God’s revealed testimony. The inward witness is connected with believing the truth God has given.

This is an important distinction. Christian assurance is not simply a feeling that changes from one day to another. It is rooted in God’s testimony and in faith in Jesus Christ.

“He that believeth not God hath made him a liar”

The second half of the verse uses very strong language. John says that someone who refuses to believe God has “made him a liar.”

John is not saying that God actually becomes a liar. God cannot become false simply because a person refuses to believe Him. Rather, the unbelieving person is treating God’s testimony as though it were untrue.

For example, if a trustworthy person gives a truthful testimony and someone deliberately rejects it, that rejection does not make the testimony false. Instead, it demonstrates that the person has refused to accept what was said.

John uses this strong statement to show the seriousness of unbelief. If God Himself has testified concerning His Son, rejecting that testimony is not merely rejecting another human opinion. It is rejecting the testimony of God.

“Because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son”

John explains exactly why unbelief is so serious: the person does not believe “the record” or testimony that God has given concerning His Son.

The central issue is therefore God’s testimony about Jesus.

The Christian message rests upon what God has revealed. The apostles proclaimed Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and John’s letter repeatedly calls believers to remain faithful to this truth.

This also connects directly with the following verse, where John summarizes God’s testimony by saying that God has given eternal life and that this life is in His Son.

The emphasis is therefore not simply on believing that God exists. The particular question is whether a person accepts God’s testimony concerning Jesus Christ.

Faith and Christian Assurance

One of the important themes of 1 John is assurance. John wants believers to understand the foundation of their faith and the reality of eternal life.

1 John 5:10 teaches that faith in the Son of God has an inward dimension. A believer receives God’s testimony and lives in response to it.

Christian assurance should therefore be based upon God’s promises rather than constantly changing circumstances. Feelings can fluctuate. Circumstances can change. Human opinions can change. But God’s testimony concerning His Son remains the foundation of Christian faith.

This does not mean that believers will never experience questions or struggles. A person may have difficult questions while still seeking God sincerely. The verse instead highlights deliberate rejection of God’s testimony and contrasts it with believing faith.

The Importance of God’s Testimony

The word “record” in this verse can also be understood as testimony or witness. John is emphasizing that God has communicated truth concerning His Son.

Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself through His words and actions. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is at the center of God’s revelation.

The believer’s faith is therefore not presented as blind faith. It is a response to the testimony God has given.

This is an important message for Christians today. Faith involves listening to God’s Word, understanding the message about Jesus Christ, and trusting Him.

A Message About Jesus Christ

1 John 5:10 ultimately directs attention toward Jesus. The question is not simply whether someone has religious knowledge. The central issue is whether the person believes God’s testimony concerning His Son.

John’s purpose throughout the letter is to encourage genuine Christian faith. He wants believers to remain faithful to the truth about Jesus and not be carried away by teachings that deny or distort Christ.

The verse therefore has both a theological and practical significance. It teaches what Christians believe about Jesus while also encouraging believers to place their confidence in God’s testimony.

Practical Lessons from 1 John 5:10

1. Faith begins with God’s truth

Christian faith is grounded in what God has revealed. Believers are called to trust God’s testimony rather than construct their faith entirely upon personal feelings.

2. Jesus Christ is central to Christian faith

The verse specifically speaks about believing in the Son of God. Jesus is not a secondary subject in John’s message. Faith in Him is at the heart of the Christian gospel.

3. God’s testimony should be taken seriously

John’s strong language demonstrates the seriousness of rejecting God’s testimony. If God has spoken concerning His Son, His testimony deserves careful consideration.

4. Believers can have inward assurance

The believer “hath the witness in himself.” Faith is not merely an external identification with Christianity. God’s truth becomes personally received and shapes the believer’s life.

5. Unbelief has spiritual consequences

John describes unbelief as rejecting God’s testimony. His purpose is to show the seriousness of the decision rather than to encourage hatred toward those who have questions.

6. Assurance rests on God

The foundation of Christian confidence is not human perfection. It is God’s testimony and His Son. This gives believers a firm basis for faith.

Detailed Explanation in Urdu

“He that believeth on the Son of God”

“Son of God”

“Hath the witness in himself”

“He that believeth not God hath made him a liar”

“Because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son”
