Detailed Explanation in English

1. “We know”

John begins with confidence: “We know.”

This is important because Christian faith is not presented here merely as uncertainty or speculation. John is communicating spiritual knowledge and assurance. A believer can know that God has worked in his or her life.

The surrounding passage of 1 John speaks repeatedly about knowing God, knowing the truth, knowing that believers belong to God, and having confidence in Him. This knowledge is based on faith in God, the testimony of Scripture, and the evidence of a changed life.

The Christian life therefore involves assurance. A person who has been born of God should continually grow in understanding, obedience, faith, and love.

2. “Whosoever is born of God”

The phrase “born of God” refers to spiritual birth.

Physical birth gives a person physical life, but being born of God describes the spiritual transformation that takes place through God. The idea is closely connected with the biblical teaching of being born again.

A person who is born of God receives a new spiritual direction. His or her relationship with sin changes. Sin may still be a struggle, but the believer no longer wants to live comfortably and deliberately in rebellion against God.

Being born of God means that the person belongs to God and is being transformed by His truth.

This transformation should become visible through a person’s choices, character, attitudes, love, obedience, and desire to follow God’s ways.

3. “Sinneth not”

This phrase requires careful understanding.

John is not saying that a believer becomes incapable of making any sinful mistake. In 1 John 1:8–9, John clearly addresses the reality of sin among believers and teaches the importance of confession and forgiveness.

Therefore, “sinneth not” should be understood in the sense of continuing in sin as a settled, deliberate, habitual way of life.

The person born of God does not make sin the defining principle of his or her life. There is a spiritual conflict. When the believer falls into sin, there should be repentance, conviction, and a desire to return to God’s ways.

The difference is not between a person who has never made a mistake and a person who has made mistakes. The difference is between someone who has been spiritually transformed and someone who willingly chooses to remain under the rule of sin.

A genuine relationship with God produces a desire for righteousness.

4. “But he that is begotten of God keepeth himself”

John then gives another description of the believer: “keepeth himself.”

This means that the believer is called to remain watchful and spiritually disciplined. God’s grace does not give Christians permission to become careless about sin.

A Christian should guard his or her heart, thoughts, actions, relationships, and spiritual life.

This involves prayer, obedience, studying God’s Word, resisting temptation, turning away from sinful behavior, and seeking to live according to God’s will.

The phrase also demonstrates the believer’s responsibility. Although salvation is God’s work, Christians are still called to actively resist evil and faithfully follow God.

Spiritual growth requires vigilance.

5. “And that wicked one toucheth him not”

The “wicked one” refers to the devil or Satan.

John teaches that the person who belongs to God is not ultimately under the power and ownership of the wicked one. This does not mean that Christians will never experience temptation, suffering, persecution, spiritual opposition, or difficult circumstances.

Instead, it points to the believer’s spiritual security.

The wicked one may tempt, oppose, accuse, or attack, but he cannot finally take away the believer’s relationship with God. The Christian’s ultimate security rests in God.

This is a message of great encouragement. Believers do not have to live in constant fear of evil. They are called to remain faithful, resist temptation, and trust God.

6. The central message of 1 John 5:18

The central message is that a person who has been born of God should no longer live as a servant of sin.

The new birth produces a new direction.

A believer may stumble, but he should not deliberately make sin his permanent lifestyle. A believer may experience temptation, but he is called to resist it. A believer may fail, but he should turn back to God rather than become comfortable with wrongdoing.

The verse therefore contains both assurance and responsibility.

There is assurance because God protects those who belong to Him. There is responsibility because believers are called to keep themselves from the influence of sin and remain faithful to God.

1. “We know” — “ہم جانتے ہیں”

2. “Whosoever is born of God” — “جو کوئی خدا سے پیدا ہوا ہے”

5. “That wicked one toucheth him not” — “وہ شریر اُسے چھوتا نہیں”
