Explanation in English

1 Peter 1:12 is a beautiful statement about the greatness of the gospel and the way God revealed His plan of salvation throughout history. Peter is speaking about the prophets of the Old Testament who received revelation concerning the coming salvation through Christ. They searched carefully to understand the meaning and timing of the things that God had revealed to them.

The verse says that these prophets were told that the things they were ministering were “not unto themselves, but unto us.” This does not mean that the prophets received no benefit from God’s revelation. Rather, it emphasizes that many of the promises and prophecies they proclaimed would find their fuller realization in the generation of believers who would see the coming of Christ and the preaching of the gospel.

The prophets served a future generation

The prophets were servants of God’s unfolding plan. They spoke about salvation, grace, the suffering of Christ, and the glory that would follow. Yet many of them lived before Jesus Christ came into the world. They could see portions of God’s plan, but they did not experience its complete fulfillment during their earthly lives.

This teaches an important spiritual lesson: God’s work may extend far beyond the lifetime of the person He uses. A person may faithfully serve God without seeing every result of that service.

The prophets faithfully proclaimed what God had shown them. Their words became part of the foundation upon which the gospel message would later be announced clearly.

“The things which are now reported unto you”

Peter then points to the gospel message that had been preached to his readers. The salvation that had once been spoken about through prophecy was now being proclaimed as a fulfilled reality.

Jesus Christ had come. He had suffered, died, and risen again. The message of salvation was now being preached to people throughout the world.

This gives the verse a powerful connection between prophecy and fulfillment. The Old Testament prophets looked forward to what God would do, while the apostles and early Christians proclaimed what God had accomplished through Jesus Christ.

The Christian gospel is therefore not presented as an isolated message that suddenly appeared. It is connected with God’s long-established purpose revealed through Scripture.

The gospel is preached through the Holy Ghost

Peter says that the gospel was preached “with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven.”

This emphasizes the divine power behind the proclamation of the gospel. Christian ministry is not merely a matter of human wisdom, eloquence, or ability. The Holy Spirit was sent from heaven to empower the proclamation of the message of Christ.

The gospel is ultimately God’s message. Human beings are its messengers, but the Holy Spirit gives power and guidance to its proclamation.

This should encourage believers who share their faith. The responsibility is to faithfully communicate the truth, while recognizing that the Holy Spirit works in people’s hearts.

“Which things the angels desire to look into”

The final statement is especially remarkable:

“Which things the angels desire to look into.”

Peter reveals that the salvation accomplished through Christ is so profound that even angels have a deep interest in understanding it.

The angels are heavenly beings who serve God, yet Peter portrays them as looking carefully into the wonderful realities of God’s salvation. The expression gives the picture of someone bending down or looking closely in order to examine something fascinating.

The gospel is therefore not a small or ordinary message. It concerns God’s eternal purpose, Christ’s suffering and glory, human redemption, grace, and the work of the Holy Spirit.

What does this teach believers?

First, salvation is part of God’s great eternal purpose. It was not an afterthought. God’s plan was progressively revealed through the prophets and ultimately manifested through Jesus Christ.

Second, believers should appreciate the privilege of hearing the gospel. The readers of Peter’s letter were living in a period when the message concerning Christ was being openly proclaimed. What earlier generations anticipated had become clearer through the coming of Christ.

Third, the verse encourages humility. If the angels themselves are described as desiring to examine these things, Christians should never treat the gospel as something ordinary or unimportant.

Fourth, the verse reminds us that God’s revelation deserves careful attention. Christians should study Scripture thoughtfully rather than treating biblical truth casually.

A message of hope

1 Peter is written to believers who were experiencing difficulties and opposition. Peter’s discussion of salvation reminds them that their present circumstances are connected to a much greater spiritual reality.

The prophets waited. Christ came. The apostles preached. The Holy Spirit empowered the message. Believers received the gospel. And God’s salvation continues to be proclaimed.

This gives Christians confidence that their faith rests upon God’s revealed purpose rather than human invention.

1 Peter 1:12 ultimately invites us to marvel at the gospel. The salvation offered through Jesus Christ was anticipated by prophets, proclaimed by apostles and gospel preachers, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and regarded with wonder by the angels.

For the believer, this should produce gratitude, humility, faithfulness, and a deeper desire to understand God’s Word.
