Detailed English Explanation
“Who verily was foreordained”
The word “foreordained” points to something that was determined or appointed beforehand. Peter is teaching that the coming of Christ was included in God’s eternal purpose.
Jesus did not simply appear in history because circumstances unexpectedly required Him. His coming was part of God’s plan. The death and resurrection of Christ were central to the divine purpose of redemption.
This truth is especially meaningful in the context of 1 Peter 1. Earlier, Peter explains that believers were redeemed not with corruptible things such as silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, “as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” Christ’s sacrifice therefore has eternal significance.
The Christian message is not merely about following a moral teacher. It is about God’s eternal plan being accomplished through Jesus Christ.
“Before the foundation of the world”
This phrase takes us back before the creation of the world. Humanity did not create God’s plan of salvation, and God’s purpose did not begin when Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
The expression “before the foundation of the world” emphasizes eternity. Before the visible world existed, God’s redemptive purpose was already known to Him.
This gives great assurance to believers. God’s purposes are not temporary or unstable. Human circumstances change, governments rise and fall, and people experience difficulties, but the eternal purpose of God remains firm.
The phrase also points to the greatness of Christ. Jesus is not merely a historical figure whose importance began two thousand years ago. His significance reaches into God’s eternal purpose.
“But was manifest”
Although Christ was foreordained before the foundation of the world, He was “manifest” in history.
To be manifested means to be revealed or made known openly. Jesus Christ entered human history, lived among people, taught the truth, performed signs and wonders, suffered, died, and rose again.
The eternal purpose of God became visible through the life and ministry of Christ.
The incarnation is therefore central to Christian faith. Jesus was not simply an idea or a spiritual concept. He was manifested in the world and made known to humanity.
The Gospel announces that God’s saving purpose became visible in the person of Jesus Christ.
“In these last times”
Peter describes the period in which Christ appeared as “these last times.”
This expression points to the significant period of salvation history inaugurated through Christ. His coming marked a decisive stage in God’s redemptive work.
The arrival of Jesus changed the course of human history. His death and resurrection established the foundation of the Gospel, and His message continues to be proclaimed throughout the world.
For Christians, the phrase “last times” also encourages spiritual seriousness. Believers should not live as though the present world is all that exists. They are called to live with faith, holiness, hope, and readiness for God’s purposes.
“For you”
Perhaps one of the most personal parts of this verse is the final phrase: “for you.”
Peter does not merely speak about an abstract theological plan. He reminds believers that Christ was manifested for their benefit.
The eternal purpose of God has a personal dimension. Jesus Christ came to accomplish salvation for people who would place their faith in Him.
This should produce gratitude. The believer can look at the cross and understand that Christ’s sacrifice was not meaningless. He gave Himself as the precious sacrifice through which redemption is offered.
The words “for you” can therefore encourage Christians during suffering. Peter was writing to believers who faced difficulties and persecution. He reminded them that their faith rested upon something eternal.
What This Verse Teaches Christians Today
1. God’s plan is eternal
God’s purpose did not begin with human circumstances. The coming of Christ was part of His eternal plan. This means believers can trust God even when they cannot understand everything happening around them.
2. Jesus Christ is central to salvation
The verse directs attention toward Christ. Salvation is not ultimately based on human achievements, wealth, religious status, or good works. It is connected with God’s redemptive work through Jesus Christ.
3. Christ was revealed at the appointed time
God’s timing is different from human timing. Jesus came at the time appointed within God’s plan. This teaches believers that waiting does not mean God has forgotten them.
4. Salvation should produce gratitude
When Christians understand that Christ’s coming was part of God’s eternal purpose, they have a reason to live with thanksgiving. Redemption is a gift of enormous value.
5. Believers have hope during suffering
The original audience of 1 Peter experienced trials. Yet Peter directed their attention beyond present circumstances toward God’s eternal work. Christians today can also find hope by remembering that God’s purposes are greater than temporary difficulties.
A Practical Spiritual Lesson
1 Peter 1:20 invites us to look at life from an eternal perspective. We often judge our circumstances according to what we can see today. But this verse reminds us that God’s work extends beyond what human beings can immediately understand.
Christ was foreordained before the foundation of the world and manifested at the appointed time. Therefore, God’s work is not controlled by human uncertainty.
When facing fear, disappointment, or unanswered questions, believers can remember that the Gospel rests upon God’s eternal purpose. Jesus Christ is the center of that purpose, and His coming was ultimately “for you.”
This should encourage believers to trust God, remain faithful, live holy lives, and place their hope in Christ.
“Who verily was foreordained” —
“Before the foundation of the world” — دنیا کی بنیاد رکھنے سے پہلے
“But was manifest” —
“In these last times” —
“For you” — تمہارے لیے
