Explanation in English

1 Peter 2:6 presents Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone chosen and honored by God. Peter is explaining an important spiritual truth: the foundation of genuine faith is not human wisdom, religious status, personal achievement, or worldly reputation. The foundation is Jesus Christ Himself.

Peter begins with the words, “Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture.” This connects his teaching with the Old Testament Scriptures. The coming of Christ was not an unexpected event. God’s plan of salvation had already been revealed through Scripture. Peter quotes the prophetic promise concerning the stone that God would establish in Zion.

“Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone”

The word “Behold” calls attention to something extremely important. God Himself declares that He is placing a special stone in Zion. In biblical imagery, a cornerstone was extremely important in construction. It helped establish the position and direction of a building. If the cornerstone was properly placed, the rest of the structure could be aligned with it.

Peter applies this image to Jesus Christ. Christ is not simply one part of God’s spiritual work. He is the chief cornerstone. He is foundational to God’s redemptive purpose.

This means that Christian faith must be built upon Christ. A person may possess knowledge, traditions, accomplishments, or religious activities, but these things cannot replace Jesus. A strong spiritual life begins with recognizing who Christ is and placing one’s faith in Him.

The reference to “Sion” points to Zion, a biblical name associated with God’s dwelling and His covenant purposes. Peter’s message is that God’s promised Messiah has been established as the foundation of His saving work.

“Elect, precious”

Peter describes the cornerstone as “elect, precious.” The word “elect” communicates the idea of being chosen. Jesus Christ is God’s chosen and appointed cornerstone.

The word “precious” emphasizes His incomparable value. Christ is not valuable merely because people recognize Him as valuable. His worth comes from God’s purpose and from who He is.

This provides encouragement to believers. The world may reject, ignore, or misunderstand Christ, but God’s evaluation is greater than human opinion. Jesus is precious in the sight of God.

The surrounding passage in 1 Peter 2 speaks about Christ as the living stone and believers as living stones being built into a spiritual house. Therefore, the cornerstone image also teaches believers where their identity belongs. Christians are connected to Christ and receive their spiritual direction from Him.

“He that believeth on him”

The verse then turns from the cornerstone to the individual believer: “he that believeth on him.”

Faith in Christ is central. Peter does not say that the person who has perfect circumstances will be secure. He speaks about the person who believes on Christ.

Biblical faith is more than simply acknowledging that Jesus existed. It involves trusting Him, depending upon Him, receiving His salvation, and looking to Him as the foundation of one’s life.

Faith can be especially important during difficult circumstances. People may experience rejection, uncertainty, disappointment, persecution, or hardship. Yet Christ remains the cornerstone. His position does not change when circumstances change.

“Shall not be confounded”

The final promise is powerful: “shall not be confounded.”

The word “confounded” carries the idea of being put to shame, disappointed, or ultimately disgraced. Peter is assuring believers that those who trust Christ will not discover at the end that their faith was misplaced.

People can place their confidence in many things—money, social position, education, political influence, relationships, physical strength, or personal success. These things can change or disappear. Christ remains the sure foundation.

This does not mean that believers will never experience earthly disappointment. Christians can suffer, face rejection, and endure trials. Rather, the promise concerns the ultimate security of trusting Christ. Those who build their hope upon Him will not ultimately be ashamed.

The Spiritual Meaning of the Cornerstone

The cornerstone illustration teaches several important lessons.

First, Christ is foundational. A building cannot be properly established without its foundation. In the same way, a life centered on God must be built upon Christ.

Second, Christ is chosen by God. Jesus is not merely one spiritual teacher among many. Peter presents Him as God’s chosen and precious cornerstone.

Third, faith in Christ gives security. Human foundations can fail, but Christ does not fail. When life becomes uncertain, believers can continue trusting Him.

Fourth, believers must align their lives with Christ. A cornerstone provided direction for the structure. Similarly, Christ should influence a believer’s values, decisions, relationships, priorities, and conduct.

Fifth, God’s judgment is more important than human opinion. Jesus was rejected by many people, yet God declared Him precious. This is especially meaningful for believers who experience rejection because of their faith. Their value does not depend upon the approval of society.

1 Peter 2:6 and Christian Hope

This verse gives Christians a foundation for hope. The believer’s confidence is not ultimately based on personal strength. It rests on Christ.

When circumstances are favorable, Christ is the cornerstone. When circumstances become painful, He remains the cornerstone. When people praise us, He remains the cornerstone. When people reject us, He remains the cornerstone.

Therefore, believers can continue faithfully following Him.

The verse also challenges us to examine what we are building our lives upon. If our confidence rests entirely on temporary things, disappointment is inevitable. But when our deepest hope is placed in Jesus Christ, we have a foundation that reaches beyond present circumstances.

“Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture”

“Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone”

“Elect, precious”

“He that believeth on him”

“Shall not be confounded”
