Detailed English Explanation

“Knowing that shortly…”

Peter begins with the word “Knowing.” This shows that he was conscious of his circumstances. He understood that his earthly ministry was coming toward its conclusion.

The phrase “shortly” indicates that Peter believed his departure was near. He did not know the exact day or hour, but he knew that the remaining period of his earthly life was limited.

This provides an important lesson for believers. Human beings often live as though life will continue indefinitely. We make plans for tomorrow, next year, and many years into the future. Planning responsibly is good, but Scripture also reminds us that earthly life is temporary.

Peter’s awareness of his approaching death caused him to focus on what mattered most: encouraging believers to remember the truth of God and remain faithful to Jesus Christ.

His situation teaches us that knowing life is temporary should not produce hopelessness. Instead, it can encourage us to live with greater purpose.

“I must put off this my tabernacle…”

The expression “tabernacle” is especially meaningful.

A tabernacle is a temporary dwelling place. Peter uses this word as a picture of his physical body. His body was the temporary earthly dwelling in which he lived during his present life.

Peter does not describe his body as his ultimate identity or permanent home. He recognizes that his earthly existence has a temporary character.

This is an important Christian perspective. Our bodies and earthly circumstances are real and valuable, but they are not permanent. Wealth, possessions, careers, human achievements, physical strength, and earthly status all eventually pass away.

The imagery of a tent or tabernacle communicates this temporary nature beautifully. A tent can provide shelter, but it is not normally considered a permanent residence. In the same way, Peter understood that his earthly body was a temporary dwelling.

This does not mean that the body is worthless. Christianity teaches that human life is valuable because people are created by God. Rather, Peter is emphasizing that physical life is not the final destination of the believer.

The verse therefore encourages Christians to look beyond the temporary circumstances of this present world toward the eternal purposes of God.

“Even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.”

Peter’s understanding of his approaching death was connected with what Jesus Christ had shown him.

This points back to Jesus’ conversation with Peter recorded in John 21:18–19. Jesus indicated that Peter’s later years would involve a kind of death through which Peter would glorify God.

Therefore, Peter did not regard his approaching death as meaningless. He understood that his life and death remained under the sovereign knowledge of his Lord.

The phrase “our Lord Jesus Christ” is also significant. Peter identifies Jesus as his Lord. Even though Peter was an apostle and a major leader among the early Christians, he remained a servant under the authority of Jesus Christ.

Peter’s confidence did not rest in himself. His confidence rested in Christ.

This is an important lesson for Christian living. Our security should not be based on our own strength, accomplishments, or ability to control the future. We should trust the Lord Jesus Christ and seek to remain faithful to Him.

Peter’s Attitude Toward Death

One of the striking features of this verse is Peter’s calmness.

Peter knows that he will soon leave this earthly life, yet he does not respond with panic. Instead, he continues teaching and encouraging believers.

The surrounding passage makes this even clearer. In 2 Peter 1:12–15, Peter explains that he wants to remind believers of the truth so that they will remember it after his departure.

This means Peter’s concern was not primarily about himself. His concern was that Christians would remain established in the truth.

His approaching death became an opportunity to strengthen others.

That is a powerful example of Christian maturity. Even when facing the end of his earthly ministry, Peter was thinking about the spiritual welfare of other believers.

The Temporary Nature of Earthly Life

The word “tabernacle” gives this verse a broader spiritual lesson.

Human life on earth is temporary. Scripture repeatedly encourages people to recognize the temporary nature of earthly existence.

James 4:14 describes human life as appearing for a little while and then vanishing. Psalm 90:12 similarly encourages people to number their days so that they may apply their hearts unto wisdom.

Peter’s message is not intended to make believers fearful. Instead, it teaches them to live wisely.

Knowing that life is temporary can encourage us to:

  • value our relationship with God;
  • love and serve others;
  • avoid living only for material possessions;
  • remain faithful to Scripture;
  • forgive others;
  • use our time responsibly;
  • prepare spiritually for eternity.

The verse reminds us that the question is not simply how long we live, but how faithfully we live during the time God gives us.

A Lesson About Spiritual Preparation

Peter’s statement also fits the larger message of 2 Peter 1.

Earlier in the chapter, Peter encourages believers to grow in faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity.

His approaching departure makes these instructions even more urgent.

Peter wants believers to have a strong spiritual foundation. He knows that teachers and leaders may eventually leave this world, but God’s truth remains.

Therefore, Christians should not build their faith solely upon a particular human leader. They should know and remember the truth of Jesus Christ.

This is one reason Peter repeatedly emphasizes remembrance in this chapter.

“Knowing that shortly…”

“I must put off this my tabernacle…”

“Even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.”
