English Explanation

The opening words, “But was rebuked for his iniquity,” refer to Balaam being corrected because of his wrongdoing. The word iniquity describes serious moral wrongdoing or sin. Balaam was not simply making an innocent mistake. His heart had become attracted to the rewards associated with wrongdoing.

Balaam’s story begins when Balak, king of Moab, wanted him to curse Israel. Balaam initially understood that he should not speak against God’s people unless God permitted him to do so. However, Balaam’s desire for material reward became a serious spiritual problem.

The New Testament uses Balaam as an example of someone who allowed personal gain to compete with obedience to God. His outward religious position did not automatically make his heart righteous. A person can know God’s commands and still allow greed, ambition, or personal desire to lead them in the wrong direction.

The most remarkable part of this verse is the statement that the donkey spoke with a man’s voice. Numbers 22 records that Balaam was traveling on his donkey when the animal saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way. Balaam himself did not see the danger at first. The donkey moved away from the angel, but Balaam became angry and struck the animal.

Eventually, God opened the donkey’s mouth, and it spoke to Balaam.

This event demonstrates an important spiritual principle: human spiritual status does not guarantee spiritual perception. Balaam was called a prophet, but at that moment he was unable to see what the animal could see. His spiritual judgment had been affected by his desires.

The phrase “forbad the madness of the prophet” is especially significant. The word madness here communicates irrational or reckless behavior. Balaam was behaving as though his desire for reward had overwhelmed sound judgment.

Sin can have this effect. When a person becomes controlled by greed, pride, anger, lust, or ambition, they may continue toward something that is obviously harmful. What once seemed unreasonable can begin to appear acceptable when the heart becomes attached to the desired outcome.

Peter therefore presents Balaam as a warning to believers. Spiritual knowledge must be accompanied by obedience. Knowing what is right is not enough if a person deliberately chooses what is wrong.

The Meaning of the Speaking Donkey

The miraculous speaking animal is one of the most memorable events in Balaam’s story. The purpose of the miracle was not merely to create a strange or spectacular event. It served a specific purpose: to stop Balaam from continuing in the wrong direction.

The donkey became an instrument of correction.

This teaches us that God is not limited to the methods people expect. God can use circumstances, other people, Scripture, conscience, or unexpected events to bring correction. A person should therefore remain humble and willing to listen.

Sometimes a person expects God to correct them through something dramatic, but correction may come through a simple warning from another person, a Bible passage, a closed opportunity, or a circumstance that forces them to reconsider their direction.

The important question is not, “Why did God use this particular method?” The important question is, “Am I willing to listen when God warns me?”

Balaam’s Greed as a Spiritual Warning

Balaam’s story is repeatedly used in the New Testament as a warning about greed and compromise. His problem was not simply that he wanted money. The deeper issue was that material reward influenced his willingness to do what was right.

This remains relevant today.

Money itself is not presented as evil simply because it is money. The danger comes when financial gain becomes more important than obedience, integrity, truth, and righteousness.

A person can begin by making a small compromise and eventually find that the compromise controls their decisions.

For example, someone may know that something is dishonest but justify it because it provides financial benefit. Another person may know that certain behavior is wrong but continue because it brings popularity or influence. The underlying problem is similar: personal reward has become more important than obedience to God.

What Does “Forbad the Madness” Teach Us?

The donkey’s action stopped Balaam from continuing toward danger. This gives the verse a strong lesson about correction.

Correction is not always pleasant. Balaam was angry when his donkey refused to continue. Yet the interruption was ultimately for his protection.

Likewise, people may become frustrated when God closes a door or when another person points out their wrongdoing. But correction can be an expression of mercy.

A warning that prevents destruction is a blessing.

Therefore, Christians should develop humility. Instead of automatically becoming angry when corrected, they should ask whether the correction reveals something that needs to change.

Practical Lessons from 2 Peter 2:16

1. Greed can damage spiritual judgment.
Balaam allowed his desire for reward to influence his conduct. Material desires must never become more important than obedience to God.

2. Religious position does not guarantee righteous character.
Balaam was known as a prophet, yet he still needed correction. Spiritual titles and outward appearances cannot replace genuine obedience.

3. God can use unexpected means to warn us.
The speaking donkey was extraordinary, but the principle remains relevant: God can use unexpected circumstances to get our attention.

4. Correction can protect us from destruction.
Balaam’s interruption prevented him from continuing blindly toward danger.

5. We should remain humble enough to receive correction.
A wise person does not reject every warning simply because it comes through an unexpected source.

6. Knowing God’s will requires obedience.
Knowledge without obedience can become spiritually dangerous. True faith should influence behavior.

“But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man’s voice forbad the madness of the prophet.”
