English Explanation

“For the mystery of iniquity doth already work”

The word “mystery” does not necessarily mean something that can never be understood. In biblical language, a mystery can refer to something previously hidden or not fully revealed that God is making known.

The “mystery of iniquity” therefore describes the hidden or developing operation of rebellion, sin, deception, and opposition to God. Paul says that this mystery “doth already work.” In other words, the problem was not merely something reserved for the distant future.

Even in the first century, people were experiencing false teaching, spiritual deception, lawlessness, persecution, pride, and rebellion against God’s truth. The ultimate expression of lawlessness had not yet been revealed, but the underlying spirit of rebellion was already active.

This teaches an important biblical principle: evil can develop gradually before becoming fully visible. What appears to be a small departure from truth can eventually become a much greater rejection of God’s authority.

“Only he who now letteth will let”

This is perhaps the most difficult part of the verse because the word “let” has changed meaning in modern English.

In the older English of the King James Version, “let” can mean to restrain, hinder, or prevent. Therefore, Paul is saying that someone or something is presently restraining the full manifestation of lawlessness.

The central question is: Who or what is the restrainer?

Christians have offered several interpretations throughout history. Some have understood the restraining power as civil government or lawful authority. Others have understood it as the work of the Holy Spirit, while some interpret it as a particular divine restriction established by God. There have also been interpretations connecting the restrainer with God’s providential control over history.

The text itself does not identify the restrainer in a completely explicit way. Therefore, it is wise not to be dogmatic about a particular interpretation when Scripture does not provide every detail.

What is clear is that lawlessness is restrained according to God’s timing. Evil cannot simply accomplish everything it desires whenever it wishes. There is a divine limit placed upon its activity.

“Until he be taken out of the way”

The final phrase indicates that the restraint will not continue forever in its present form. At the appointed time, the restraining influence will be removed or cease to restrain in the same manner.

The following verses explain that the “man of sin” or “man of lawlessness” will then be revealed. Paul emphasizes, however, that this apparent triumph of evil is temporary. The passage ultimately points toward the victory of Jesus Christ.

This is important because 2 Thessalonians 2 is not ultimately a story about evil winning. It is a warning about evil’s temporary manifestation before God’s decisive judgment.

Detailed Explanation in Urdu

“For the mystery of iniquity doth already work”

“Only he who now letteth will let”

“Until he be taken out of the way”

What This Verse Teaches Christians Today

1. Evil is already active.

2. Evil is restrained.

3. Christians should remain spiritually alert.

4. God’s timing matters.

5. The final victory belongs to Christ.
