Detailed English Explanation
“Even him”
The phrase “Even him” refers back to the person Paul has been discussing in the preceding verses. In 2 Thessalonians 2, Paul describes a rebellious figure who opposes God and exalts himself. This person is associated with lawlessness and deception.
Paul is drawing attention to the manner in which this individual will appear. His arrival will not simply be ordinary or insignificant. There will be a remarkable display connected with his appearance.
“Whose coming”
The word “coming” refers to the manifestation or appearance of this individual. The passage presents his coming as something that will have a powerful influence on people.
The Bible also uses the language of “coming” when speaking about Christ. However, Paul makes an important contrast between the coming of Christ and the coming of the lawless one. Christ’s coming is associated with truth, righteousness, glory, and victory, whereas the coming described in verse 9 is associated with deception and Satanic activity.
This contrast is essential for understanding the passage.
“Is after the working of Satan”
This is one of the most serious statements in the verse. Paul says that the coming of this person occurs “after the working of Satan.”
The expression indicates that Satan is behind the deceptive power associated with this manifestation. The passage does not present Satan as equal to God. Rather, Satan is portrayed as an opposing and deceptive power whose activity remains under God’s ultimate authority.
The verse therefore warns that supernatural-looking activity should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of divine approval.
“With all power”
The phrase “with all power” emphasizes the impressive nature of the deception. The coming of this figure will involve manifestations that may appear extraordinary and convincing.
The important lesson is that power by itself is not the final test of truth. Something can appear powerful while still being false. Biblical faith calls people to examine spiritual claims according to God’s truth rather than simply accepting something because it appears miraculous.
“And signs”
A sign is something intended to attract attention or point toward a claimed message, authority, or identity.
Paul warns that signs can be connected with deception. This is especially important because people can be impressed by remarkable events without carefully examining their meaning.
The Bible repeatedly encourages believers to exercise discernment. A claimed miracle does not automatically prove that the person performing or promoting it speaks truthfully.
“And lying wonders”
The final phrase is particularly significant: “lying wonders.”
This does not merely mean that every phenomenon is necessarily imaginary. Rather, the expression emphasizes the deceptive character of these wonders. They are associated with falsehood and are used in connection with deception.
The following verses make the point even clearer. Paul explains that those who are deceived “received not the love of the truth” (2 Thessalonians 2:10). Thus, the deeper problem is not simply extraordinary signs; it is the rejection of truth.
The passage teaches that deception can be persuasive. People may be attracted to impressive displays while neglecting truth, righteousness, and obedience to God.
What 2 Thessalonians 2:9 Teaches
1. Satanic deception can appear impressive
The verse teaches that evil does not always present itself in an obviously ugly or frightening form. Deception may come with impressive demonstrations, claims of authority, or apparent supernatural signs.
Therefore, Christians are called to spiritual discernment rather than unquestioning acceptance.
2. Miraculous claims must be examined
The existence of a sign or wonder is not, by itself, sufficient proof that a message is true. Scripture places truth above spectacle.
Believers should ask whether a teaching agrees with God’s revealed truth and whether it leads people toward genuine faithfulness to God.
3. Truth is more important than spectacle
The surrounding passage repeatedly emphasizes truth. In verse 10, Paul says that those who perish do so because they did not receive the love of the truth.
This provides an important principle: a person should seek truth rather than simply seek impressive experiences.
4. The lawless one is ultimately defeated
Although 2 Thessalonians 2:9 describes frightening deception, the chapter does not end with Satan or the lawless one winning.
In verse 8, Paul says that the Lord Jesus will destroy the lawless one by the brightness of His coming. Therefore, verse 9 should be read in light of the ultimate victory of Christ.
The power of deception may be great, but it is temporary and cannot overcome Christ.
“Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders:”
“Whose coming”
“After the working of Satan”
“With all power”
“And signs”
“And lying wonders”
“Lying wonders”
