Detailed Explanation in English
Joseph Remembered His Dreams
The verse begins with the words, “And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them.”
This statement is significant because Joseph had not forgotten the dreams God had allowed him to receive when he was young. At the time, Joseph could not have understood how those dreams would be fulfilled. His brothers had hated him because of the dreams, and eventually they sold him into slavery.
Joseph then experienced years of hardship. He was taken away from his family and brought to Egypt. He became a servant and later suffered imprisonment after being falsely accused. Yet God remained with Joseph throughout these circumstances.
Eventually, Joseph was brought before Pharaoh and interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams. God gave Joseph wisdom to understand that Egypt would experience seven years of abundance followed by seven years of severe famine. Pharaoh recognized Joseph’s wisdom and appointed him over Egypt’s food administration.
When the famine came, people from surrounding lands traveled to Egypt to buy grain. Joseph’s brothers were among those who came. They stood before Joseph without recognizing him.
When Joseph saw them, he remembered the dreams of his youth.
This teaches an important spiritual lesson: God’s purposes may take a long time to become visible, but delay does not mean that God has forgotten His purpose.
Joseph’s dreams had seemed impossible when he was young. His circumstances appeared to contradict them. Yet eventually events began to unfold in a way that reminded Joseph of those dreams.
Joseph Recognized His Brothers
The previous verses explain that Joseph knew his brothers, while they did not recognize him. This created a unique situation.
Joseph knew the people standing before him were the same brothers who had sold him many years earlier. They probably never imagined that the brother they had rejected would one day be the powerful Egyptian official controlling the distribution of grain.
Joseph did not immediately reveal his identity.
Instead, he spoke to them as though they were strangers and accused them of being spies.
This was not simply a casual conversation. Joseph was testing them and seeking to understand their character and circumstances.
“Ye Are Spies”
Joseph said:
“Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.”
The phrase “nakedness of the land” refers to the vulnerable or exposed parts of the country, especially its weaknesses and defenses.
Joseph accused his brothers of coming into Egypt to investigate the country’s vulnerable areas. At this stage of the story, the accusation was part of Joseph’s questioning and testing of them.
The brothers immediately denied the accusation and explained that they were sons of one man from Canaan who had come to Egypt because of the famine.
Joseph continued questioning them, and their answers gradually brought details about their family into the conversation. This eventually led to Benjamin, Joseph’s younger brother, becoming part of the story.
The Connection With Joseph’s Dreams
The most important feature of Genesis 42:9 is the connection between the present event and Joseph’s earlier dreams.
Joseph’s brothers had once rejected the idea that they would ever bow before him. Yet now they had come to Egypt and bowed before him because they needed food.
Joseph did not necessarily understand every detail of God’s plan at the beginning. But now he could see that the dreams of his youth had a connection to what was happening before him.
This demonstrates how God’s plans can unfold gradually.
Sometimes people cannot see the purpose of difficult experiences while they are going through them. Joseph’s years of slavery and imprisonment must have seemed extremely painful and confusing. Yet God used those circumstances to place Joseph in Egypt at exactly the position where he could preserve many lives during the famine.
Joseph’s Response to His Past
Another important lesson concerns Joseph’s response when his brothers appeared before him.
Joseph had an opportunity to act against the brothers who had harmed him. However, the story does not present Joseph simply as someone seeking personal revenge. Instead, he carefully questioned and tested them.
The later chapters of Genesis reveal that Joseph eventually recognized God’s larger purpose in what had happened.
Joseph would later explain that although his brothers intended harm, God used the circumstances for a greater purpose of preserving life.
This does not mean that the wrongdoing of Joseph’s brothers was acceptable. Their actions were still wrong. Rather, the story demonstrates that human wrongdoing cannot prevent God from accomplishing His purposes.
A Lesson About God’s Timing
Genesis 42:9 also teaches about patience.
Joseph received his dreams when he was young, but many years passed before their significance became clearer. During those years, Joseph experienced slavery, false accusations, imprisonment, and separation from his family.
The fulfillment of God’s purposes did not happen immediately.
This can encourage readers who are waiting for answers or who do not yet understand why certain events are happening in their lives. Joseph’s story reminds us that a person’s present circumstances do not necessarily reveal the complete story.
God’s work can extend across many years.
God
