English Explanation of Revelation 1:17

“And when I saw him”

John begins by describing what happened when he saw the glorious figure revealed to him. This was not an ordinary encounter. In the preceding verses, John had described the appearance of the Son of man with extraordinary imagery, including a face shining like the sun and eyes like a flame of fire.

John had followed Christ during His earthly ministry, but this vision presented Christ in His heavenly glory. The experience was so overwhelming that John could not simply stand normally before Him.

This teaches an important spiritual truth: encountering the glory and holiness of Christ produces humility and reverence. John, an apostle and servant of Christ, did not respond with pride. He fell before Him.

“I fell at his feet as dead”

John’s response demonstrates the overwhelming nature of the vision. The expression does not mean that John permanently died. Rather, it describes his complete weakness and inability to remain standing in the presence of such an extraordinary revelation.

John was overwhelmed by fear, awe, and the majesty of what he saw.

This part of the verse reminds believers that Christ is not merely a historical figure. Revelation presents Him as the glorified Lord who possesses authority, majesty, and power.

John’s reaction also demonstrates humility. When a person recognizes the greatness of Christ, human strength and self-confidence become insignificant.

“And he laid his right hand upon me”

One of the most beautiful parts of this verse is the transition from John’s fear to Christ’s comforting action.

Jesus does not leave John lying in fear. He reaches out and places His right hand upon him.

The right hand is frequently associated in Scripture with strength, authority, honor, and power. Here, Christ’s right hand also communicates personal reassurance. The One who possesses overwhelming authority is also compassionate toward His servant.

This is an important message of the verse: Christ’s greatness does not make Him distant from His people. His authority is accompanied by compassion.

John was overwhelmed, but Christ personally strengthened him.

“Saying unto me, Fear not”

These words are central to the passage.

Jesus says, “Fear not.”

John had a reason to be overwhelmed by the vision, but Jesus did not want him to remain in fear. Christ reassured him so that he could receive the revelation that followed.

The command does not mean that John should treat the vision casually. Instead, Christ transforms John’s fear into confidence so that he can continue his calling.

The words “Fear not” also reveal the comforting character of Christ. He knows the weakness of His servant and responds with reassurance.

For Christians, this can serve as a reminder that difficult circumstances do not place believers outside the knowledge and care of Christ. His presence gives courage to continue faithfully.

“I am the first and the last”

The final statement is one of the most important declarations in the verse.

Jesus says, “I am the first and the last.”

This expression points to His eternal significance and supreme authority. He is not limited by human history. He stands at the beginning and at the end.

The phrase also connects with other statements in Revelation concerning the First and the Last, emphasizing Christ’s eternal authority over creation and history.

Human life has beginnings and endings. Kingdoms rise and fall. Generations come and pass. Circumstances change. But Christ remains Lord throughout the entire story.

For believers, this truth provides confidence. History is not outside God’s authority, and Christ is not surprised by the events that unfold.

Main Spiritual Lessons

1. Christ’s glory should produce humility

John fell at Christ’s feet when he saw Him. His reaction reminds us that genuine awareness of Christ’s glory produces humility rather than pride.

2. Christ comforts those who are overwhelmed

John was overwhelmed, but Jesus reached out His right hand and told him not to fear. The passage shows both Christ’s majesty and His compassion.

3. “Fear not” is a message of encouragement

Christ did not allow John’s fear to prevent him from fulfilling his purpose. His words gave John the courage to continue receiving and recording the revelation.

4. Christ is the First and the Last

The statement points to Christ’s eternal authority. He is above the changing circumstances of human history.

5. Christ has authority over the whole story

Revelation ultimately presents history from the perspective of God’s purposes. The words “the first and the last” remind readers that Christ is sovereign over the beginning, continuation, and ultimate completion of His purposes.

Detailed Urdu Explanation

“And when I saw him”

“I fell at his feet as dead”

“And he laid his right hand upon me”

“Fear not”

“I am the first and the last”
