John 8:12

Verse: Then spake Jesus again unto them saying I am the light of the world he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life

John 8:13

Verse: The Pharisees therefore said unto him Thou bearest record of thyself thy record is not true

According to Jewish Rabbinic law, a person’s self-testimony was not legally binding or sufficient to establish a fact in court. They accuse Him of making baseless claims because He lacks corroborating human witnesses.

John 8:14

Verse: Jesus answered and said unto them Though I bear record of myself yet my record is true for I know whence I came and whither I go but ye cannot tell whence I come and whither I go

  • English Explanation: Jesus counters by stating that His self-testimony is completely valid because of His divine origin and destiny. He possesses absolute, firsthand knowledge of His pre-existence with God the Father and His return to Heaven. The Pharisees judge from a limited, earthly perspective and are entirely blind to His divine reality.

John 8:15

Verse: Ye judge after the flesh I judge no man

  • English Explanation: Jesus exposes the faulty metrics of His critics. The Pharisees judge based purely on external appearance, human standards, and worldly prejudices (“after the flesh”). Jesus, during His first coming, did not come to condemn or pass worldly judgment on humanity, but to offer salvation.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع ان کے پرکھنے کے غلط معیار کو بے نقاب کرتے ہیں۔ فریسی صرف ظاہری انسانی معیاروں اور دنیاوی تعصبات کے تحت فیصلہ کرتے ہیں۔ یسوع واضح کرتے ہیں کہ ان کی پہلی آمد کا مقصد دنیا پر دنیاوی عدالت کرنا یا سزا دینا نہیں، بلکہ نجات دینا ہے۔

John 8:16

Verse: And yet if I judge my judgment is true for I am not alone but I and the Father that sent me

  • English Explanation: Jesus clarifies that if He does render a verdict, it is absolutely flawless and binding. His judgment is never isolated or subjective; it is perfectly aligned with God the Father who sent Him. They operate in complete unity of mind and purpose.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع واضح کرتے ہیں کہ اگر وہ کوئی فیصلہ یا عدالت کرتے بھی ہیں، تو وہ بالکل سچی اور درست ہوتی ہے۔ ان کا فیصلہ اکیلا یا ذاتی نہیں ہوتا، بلکہ وہ باپ (خدا) کے ساتھ کامل اتحاد میں ہے جس نے انہیں بھیجا ہے۔ دونوں کا ارادہ اور فیصلہ ایک ہی ہے۔

John 8:17

Verse: It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true

  • English Explanation: Jesus appeals directly to the Mosaic Law (Deuteronomy 19:15), which the Pharisees prided themselves on keeping. The law states that a matter is legally established by the testimony of at least two credible witnesses.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع موسیٰ کی شریعت (استثنا 19:15) کا حوالہ دیتے ہیں جس پر فریسی بہت فخر کرتے تھے۔ شریعت کے مطابق کسی بھی بات کو ثابت کرنے کے لیے کم از کم دو گواہوں کی گواہی ضروری ہوتی ہے۔

John 8:18

Verse: I am one that bear witness of myself and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me

  • English Explanation: Jesus fulfills the legal requirement of the law by presenting two divine witnesses: Himself and God the Father. The Father witnessed to Jesus through signs, wonders, audible declarations at His baptism, and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع شریعت کی اس شرط کو دو الٰہی گواہ پیش کر کے پورا کرتے ہیں: ایک وہ خود اور دوسرے خدا باپ جس نے انہیں بھیجا۔ باپ نے معجزات، نشانیوں، اور بپتسمہ کے وقت اپنی آواز کے ذریعے یسوع کی گواہی دی تھی۔

John 8:19

Verse: Then said they unto him Where is thy Father Jesus answered Ye neither know me nor my Father if ye had known me ye should have known my Father also

  • English Explanation: The Pharisees, thinking in purely material and biological terms, mockingly ask where His father is. Jesus reveals their deep spiritual blindness. He states that it is impossible to truly know God the Father without recognizing and accepting the Son, as Jesus is the perfect revelation of the Father.

John 8:20

Verse: These words spake Jesus in the treasury as he taught in the temple and no man laid hands on him for his hour was not yet come

  • English Explanation: John notes the specific, highly secure location of this discourse: the Temple Treasury, a heavily frequented area supervised by religious authorities. Despite the controversial nature of His statements, no one could arrest Him because His divinely appointed time for suffering and crucifixion had not yet arrived.

John 8:21

Verse: Then said Jesus again unto them I go my way and ye shall seek me and shall die in your sins whither I go ye cannot come

  • English Explanation: Jesus warns His opponents of a tragic spiritual reality. He will return to the Father, and though they may desperately seek a Messiah later, they will die in an unforgiven state of sin because they rejected Him. Heaven will be completely inaccessible to them.

John 8:22

Verse: Then said the Jews Will he kill himself because he saith Whither I go ye cannot come

  • English Explanation: Blinded by literalism and malice, the Jewish leaders mockingly distort Jesus’ words. They cynically wonder if He plans to commit suicide, an act historically viewed by Jews as leading to the darkest, lowest depths of Hades (hell)—where they assumed they would never go.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یہودی رہنماؤں نے یسوع کی بات کا مذاق اڑاتے ہوئے اسے غلط رنگ دیا۔ انہوں نے طنزاً کہا کہ کیا یہ خودکشی کرنے والا ہے؟ کیونکہ یہودیوں کے نزدیک خودکشی کرنے والا جہنم کے سب سے نچلے حصے میں جاتا ہے، جہاں ان کے خیال میں وہ خود کبھی نہیں جائیں گے۔

John 8:23

Verse: And he said unto them Ye are from beneath I am from above ye are of this world I am not of this world

  • English Explanation: Jesus highlights the cosmic, fundamental difference in their origins and natures. They belong to the fallen, earthly realm governed by human limitations and sin (“from beneath”). In contrast, Jesus belongs to the heavenly, divine realm (“from above”).

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع ان کے اور اپنے درمیان موجود بنیادی اور کائناتی فرق کو واضح کرتے ہیں۔ وہ کہتے ہیں کہ تم نیچے (دنیاوی اور گناہ آلود دائرے) کے ہو، جبکہ میں اوپر (آسمانی اور الٰہی دائرے) کا ہوں۔ تمہاری سوچ اور حقیقت دنیاوی ہے، میری نہیں۔

John 8:24

Verse: I said therefore unto you that ye shall die in your sins for if ye believe not that I am he ye shall die in your sins

  • English Explanation: Jesus delivers a stark, urgent condition for salvation. The phrase “I am he” (Greek: Ego Emi) strongly echoes God’s divine name revealed to Moses. Failing to believe in Jesus’ true, divine identity results in dying with unforgiven guilt.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع نجات کے لیے ایک سخت اور اہم شرط پیش کرتے ہیں۔ وہ فرماتے ہیں کہ اگر تم ایمان نہیں لاتے کہ “میں ہی ہوں” (جو خدا کا الٰہی نام ظاہر کرتا ہے)، تو تم اپنے گناہوں کی حالت میں ہلاک ہو جاؤ گے اور کبھی معافی نہیں پاؤ گے۔

John 8:25

Verse: Then said they unto him Who art thou And Jesus saith unto them Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning

  • English Explanation: Frustrated and demanding a direct title, they ask Him bluntly, “Who are you?” Jesus responds that He is exactly who He has claimed to be from the very start of His public ministry. His message and identity have remained perfectly consistent.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): تنگ آ کر انہوں نے براہِ راست پوچھا، “تو کون ہے؟” یسوع نے جواب دیا کہ میں وہی ہوں جو شروع سے اپنے بارے میں بتاتا آ رہا ہوں۔ ان کا پیغام اور ان کی شناخت پہلے دن سے ایک جیسی اور غیر تبدیل شدہ ہے۔

John 8:26

Verse: I have many things to say and to judge of you but he that sent me is true and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him

  • English Explanation: Jesus acknowledges that He has plenty of material to expose and judge regarding their hypocrisy. However, His primary mission is to act as the faithful messenger of the Father. He speaks only the absolute truth received directly from God.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع فرماتے ہیں کہ ان کے پاس فریسیوں کی منافقت کو بے نقاب کرنے اور ان پر فیصلہ سنانے کے لیے بہت کچھ ہے۔ لیکن ان کا بنیادی مقصد باپ کا وفادار رسول بننا ہے۔ وہ دنیا کے سامنے صرف وہی سچ بولتے ہیں جو انہوں نے خدا سے سنا ہے۔

John 8:27

Verse: They understood not that he spake to them of the Father

  • English Explanation: John highlights the profound cognitive and spiritual disconnect of the audience. Despite Jesus using clear relational terms, their minds were so veiled by earthly preconceptions that they failed to realize He was speaking about the Almighty God as His Father.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یوحنا یہاں سننے والوں کی گہری روحانی نااہلی کو ظاہر کرتے ہیں۔ یسوع کے واضح الفاظ کے باوجود، ان کے ذہن دنیاوی سوچ میں اتنے جکڑے ہوئے تھے کہ وہ سمجھ ہی نہ سکے کہ وہ قادرِ مطلق خدا کو اپنا باپ کہہ رہے ہیں۔

John 8:28

Verse: Then said Jesus unto them When ye have lifted up the Son of man then shall ye know that I am he and that I do nothing of myself but as my Father hath taught me I speak these things

  • English Explanation: The term “lifted up” is a double entendre referring directly to Jesus being raised up on the cross (crucifixion) and subsequently exalted in resurrection and ascension. Only after this historic event would the true divine identity of Jesus and His absolute obedience to the Father become undeniably clear.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یہاں “اونچے چڑھائے جانے” کا مطلب یسوع کا صلیب پر لٹکایا جانا اور بعد میں جی اٹھنا اور آسمان پر اٹھایا جانا ہے۔ یسوع فرماتے ہیں کہ جب تم ایسا کرو گے، تب تمہیں احساس ہوگا کہ میں وہی الٰہی شخصیت ہوں اور جو کچھ میں بولتا ہوں وہ باپ کی تعلیم کے مطابق ہے۔

John 8:29

Verse: And he that sent me is with me the Father hath not left me alone for I do always those things that please him

  • English Explanation: Jesus declares His unbroken communion with the Father. He is never abandoned because His life is one of perfect, continuous alignment with God’s will. Every action and word brings absolute pleasure to the Father.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع باپ کے ساتھ اپنے اٹوٹ رشتے کا اعلان کرتے ہیں۔ وہ فرماتے ہیں کہ خدا نے انہیں کبھی اکیلا نہیں چھوڑا، کیونکہ وہ ہمیشہ وہی کام کرتے ہیں جو باپ کی مرضی کے مطابق ہیں اور اسے پسند آتے ہیں۔

John 8:30

Verse: As he spake these words many believed on him

  • English Explanation: Despite the intense opposition of the religious elite, Jesus’ authority, conviction, and deep spiritual truth resonate with the common crowd, leading many onlookers to place their faith in Him.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): مذہبی رہنماؤں کی شدید مخالفت کے باوجود، یسوع کے کلام کے اختیار اور گہرے سچ نے عام لوگوں کے دلوں پر اثر کیا، جس کے نتیجے میں وہاں موجود بہت سے لوگ ان پر ایمان لائے۔

John 8:31

Verse: Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him If ye continue in my word then are ye my disciples indeed

  • English Explanation: Jesus addresses the newly professing believers, setting the true standard for discipleship. True faith is not a momentary emotional decision; it requires “continuing” or abiding long-term in His teachings.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع ان نئے ایمان لانے والوں سے مخاطب ہو کر سچی شاگردی کا معیار مقرر کرتے ہیں۔ وہ فرماتے ہیں کہ سچا ایمان صرف وقتی جذبہ نہیں، بلکہ اس کے لیے ضروری ہے کہ انسان مستقل مزاجی سے ان کے کلام پر قائم رہے۔

John 8:32

Verse: And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free

  • English Explanation: This famous verse links spiritual discipleship to liberation. Experiencing and living out the truth of Jesus dismantles the deception of sin, freeing the human soul from spiritual bondage, guilt, and eternal death.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یہ مشہور آیت روحانی آزادی کو کلام پر قائم رہنے سے جوڑتی ہے۔ جب انسان یسوع کے سچ کو جان لیتا ہے، تو وہ سچ اسے گناہ کی غلامی، خوف، اور ابدی موت کے پھندے سے آزاد کر دیتا ہے۔

John 8:33

Verse: They answered him We be Abraham’s seed and were never in bondage to any man how sayest thou Ye shall be made free

  • English Explanation: The listeners take offense, relying on their national pride and lineage as descendants of Abraham. They historically ignore their political bondages (Egypt, Babylon, and current Rome) and wrongly assume that their heritage guarantees them automatic spiritual freedom.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): سننے والوں نے اپنی قومی غیرت اور ابراہام کی نسل ہونے پر فخر کرتے ہوئے اعتراض کیا۔ وہ اپنی سیاسی غلامیوں (مصر، بابل اور رومی حکومت) کو نظر انداز کر کے یہ سمجھ بیٹھے کہ ابراہام کی اولاد ہونے کی وجہ سے وہ پہلے ہی سے روحانی طور پر آزاد ہیں۔

John 8:34

Verse: Jesus answered them Verily verily I say unto you Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin

  • Explanation: Jesus shifts the conversation from political/ethnic freedom to deep moral reality. He introduces a universal spiritual law: anyone who continually practices sin becomes a slave to that sin. It dominates their desires, wills, and habits.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع گفتگو کو ظاہری آزادی سے ہٹا کر گہری اخلاقی حقیقت کی طرف لاتے ہیں۔ وہ ایک آفاقی روحانی قانون بیان کرتے ہیں کہ جو کوئی گناہ کرتا ہے (یعنی گناہ کی زندگی گزارتا ہے)، وہ گناہ کا غلام بن جاتا ہے اور گناہ اس پر قابض ہو جاتا ہے۔

John 8:35

Verse: And the servant abideth not in the house for ever but the Son abideth ever

  • English Explanation: Using a household metaphor, Jesus explains that a slave has no permanent legal rights or security in a master’s house and can be dismissed at any time. Only a true born son has permanent residency and inheritance rights.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): ایک گھریلو مثال کا استعمال کرتے ہوئے، یسوع واضح کرتے ہیں کہ غلام کا گھر میں کوئی مستقل حق یا تحفظ نہیں ہوتا، اسے کسی بھی وقت نکالا جا سکتا ہے۔ لیکن بیٹا ہمیشہ گھر کا مالک اور وارث رہتا ہے۔

John 8:36

Verse: If the Son therefore shall make you free ye shall be free indeed

  • English Explanation: Since Jesus is the ultimate Son of God who owns the house, He possesses the exclusive authority to liberate the slaves of sin. The freedom Jesus provides is absolute, real, and eternal, transferring people from the status of slaves to children of God.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): چونکہ یسوع خدا کے سچے بیٹے ہیں، اس لیے ان کے پاس گناہ کے غلاموں کو آزاد کرنے کا پورا اختیار ہے۔ جو آزادی یسوع دیتے ہیں وہ حقیقی اور ابدی ہوتی ہے، جو انسان کو غلامی سے نکال کر خدا کا فرزند بنا دیتی ہے۔

John 8:37

Verse: I know that ye are Abraham’s seed but ye seek to kill me because my word hath no place in you

  • English Explanation: Jesus acknowledges their physical lineage as Abraham’s descendants, but points out a massive internal contradiction: they want to murder Him. Their violent desires prove that His life-giving word has found no reception in their hearts.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع تسلیم کرتے ہیں کہ وہ جسمانی طور پر ابراہام کی نسل سے ہیں، لیکن وہ ان کے اندر کے تضاد کو بے نقاب کرتے ہیں کہ وہ یسوع کو قتل کرنا چاہتے ہیں۔ یہ قاتلانہ سوچ ثابت کرتی ہے کہ یسوع کے کلام کے لیے ان کے دلوں میں کوئی جگہ نہیں ہے۔

John 8:38

Verse: I speak that which I have seen with my Father and ye do that which ye have seen with your father

  • English Explanation: Jesus draws a line between two opposing spiritual families. He speaks and acts out of the intimate divine reality He witnessed with His Father (God). Meanwhile, His opponents act in accordance with the nature of their spiritual father, whose identity will soon be explicitly exposed.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع دو مختلف روحانی خاندانوں کے درمیان لکیر کھینچتے ہیں۔ وہ فرماتے ہیں کہ میں وہ باتیں کرتا ہوں جو میں نے اپنے باپ (خدا) کے پاس دیکھی ہیں، جبکہ تم وہ کام کرتے ہو جو تم نے اپنے باپ سے سیکھے ہیں (جس کی حقیقت وہ آگے بیان کریں گے)۔

John 8:39

Verse: They answered and said unto him Abraham is our father Jesus saith unto them If ye were Abraham’s children ye would do the works of Abraham

  • English Explanation: They double down on their heritage, insisting Abraham is their father. Jesus responds by distinguishing between biological descent (“seed”) and moral/spiritual resemblance (“children”). True children of Abraham would exhibit Abraham’s faith, humility, and obedience.

John 8:40

Verse: But now ye seek to kill me a man that hath told you the truth which I have heard of God this did not Abraham

  • English Explanation: Jesus presents concrete evidence of how unlike Abraham they truly are. Abraham welcomed divine messengers with hospitality and faith. In stark contrast, these leaders are actively plotting to kill Jesus simply for speaking the absolute truth received from God.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع ثبوت پیش کرتے ہیں کہ وہ ابراہام سے کتنے مختلف ہیں۔ ابراہام نے خدا کے فرستادوں کا استقبال ایمان اور عاجزی سے کیا تھا۔ اس کے برعکس، یہ لوگ یسوع کو صرف اس لیے قتل کرنا چاہتے ہیں کیونکہ انہوں نے خدا سے سنا ہوا سچ بیان کیا۔

John 8:41

Verse: Ye do the deeds of your father Then said they to him We be not born of fornication we have one Father even God

  • English Explanation: Jesus reiterates that their actions copy their true spiritual father. Sensing an insult, the Jews react defensively, tossing a possible slur regarding Jesus’ unusual birth circumstances (“not born of fornication”) and claiming that God is their ultimate Father.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): یسوع دہراتے ہیں کہ تمہارے کام تمہارے اصل روحانی باپ کے جیسے ہیں۔ یہودیوں نے دفاعی انداز اپناتے ہوئے طنزاً کہا (جو شاید یسوع کی معجزانہ پیدائش پر ایک حملہ تھا) کہ “ہم حرام کاری سے پیدا نہیں ہوئے”، اور دعویٰ کیا کہ ہمارا باپ صرف خدا ہے۔

John 8:42

Verse: Jesus said unto them If God were your Father ye would love me for I proceeded forth and came from God neither came I of myself but he sent me

  • English Explanation: Jesus logical refutes their claim. If God were genuinely their spiritual Father, they would naturally love Jesus, because He is the direct emanation and emissary from God. Rejecting the sent Son is a direct rejection of the Father who sent Him.
