John 8:44
Verse: Ye are of your father the devil and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie he speaketh of his own for he is a liar and the father of it.

John 8:45
Verse: And because I tell you the truth ye believe me not.

If Jesus had spoken falsehoods aligned with their worldly desires, they might have listened; but because He spoke absolute divine truth, they rejected Him.

John 8:46
Verse: Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth why do ye not believe me?
English Explanation: Jesus challenges His accusers to produce any evidence of sin or moral failing in Him. His life was entirely sinless and perfect. Since they cannot prove Him guilty of any wrongdoing or falsehood, Jesus asks the logical question: If my character is flawless and I speak the truth, why do you still refuse to believe my message?

John 8:47
Verse: He that is of God heareth God’s words ye therefore hear them not because ye are not of God.

The refusal of the religious leaders to listen to and accept Jesus’ teaching was definitive proof that they were not spiritually connected to God.

Verse: Then answered the Jews and said unto him Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a devil?

Verse: Jesus answered I have not a devil but I honour my Father and ye do dishonour me.

Instead, His entire mission, words, and actions are designed to bring honor to God the Father. In contrast, by insulting Jesus, the religious leaders are actively dishonoring the very Father they claim to serve.

John 8:50
Verse: And I seek not mine own glory there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
English Explanation: Jesus explains that He is not motivated by human ambition or self-exaltation. He does not need to defend His own reputation because God the Father is the One who seeks Jesus’ glory and will ultimately judge those who reject and insult His Son.

Verse: Verily verily I say unto you If a man keep my saying he shall never see death.

He is not referring to the physical death that all human bodies undergo, but rather to eternal death—spiritual separation from God. Those who hold fast to His teachings and believe in Him are granted eternal life and will never experience spiritual condemnation.

Verse: Then said the Jews unto him Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead and the prophets and thou sayest If a man keep my saying he shall never taste of death.

They argue that the greatest pillars of faith—Abraham and the prophets—all suffered physical death. Verse: Art thou greater than our father Abraham which is dead? and the prophets are dead whom makest thou thyself?

Verse: Jesus answered If I honour myself my honour is nothing it is my Father that honoureth me of whom ye say that he is your God

John 8:55
Verse: Yet ye have not known him but I know him and if I should say I know him not I shall be a liar like unto you but I know him and keep his saying.

Jesus, however, possesses complete, intimate, and eternal knowledge of the Father. He emphasizes that denying this knowledge would be a lie, reducing Him to their level of falsehood. John 8:56
Verse: Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day and he saw it and was glad.

Verse: Then said the Jews unto him Thou art not yet fifty years old and hast thou seen Abraham?

Looking at His physical appearance, they note He is not even fifty years old, making it historically and physically impossible for Him to have coexisted with Abraham, who lived thousands of years prior.

John 8:58
Verse: Jesus said unto them Verily verily I say unto you Before Abraham was I am.

Verse: Then took they up stones to cast at him but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple going through the midst of them and so passed by.
English Explanation: The audience perfectly understood Jesus’ claim to be God. Under Levitical law, claiming to be God was considered blasphemy, punishable by stoning. Because they rejected His divinity, they picked up stones to execute Him. However, because His appointed hour of crucifixion had not yet arrived, Jesus supernaturally concealed Himself and left the temple grounds unharmed.

Chapter 9
John 9:1
Verse: And as Jesus passed by he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
English Explanation: As Jesus continues His journey after leaving the temple, His focus immediately shifts from His persecutors to a person in deep need. He notices a man who had been blind since the day he was born. This sets the stage for a powerful miracle that serves as a living sign of Jesus’ identity as the light of the world.

John 9:2
Verse: And his disciples asked him saying Master who did sin this man or his parents that he was born blind?

They present Jesus with a rigid, binary question.

John 9:3
Verse: Jesus answered Neither hath this man sinned nor his parents but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

While sin introduced brokenness into the world generally, this man’s blindness was not a direct punishment. Instead, Jesus explains that this situation exists so that God’s sovereign power, mercy, and miraculous works can be openly displayed through his healing.

John 9:4
Verse: I must work the works of him that sent me while it is day the night cometh when no man can work.
English Explanation: Jesus expresses an urgent sense of divine mission. “Day” represents the time of His earthly ministry and the presence of His saving light, during which He must perform the deeds assigned by the Father. “Night” signifies His approaching death and the period when His immediate earthly ministry would conclude.

John 9:5
Verse: As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world.
English Explanation: Jesus connects His previous theological teaching with the imminent physical miracle. As the Light of the World, He has the authority and power to dispel both physical darkness (blindness) and spiritual darkness (sin and ignorance). His presence brings illumination to a dark creation.

John 9:6
Verse: When he had thus spoken he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay
English Explanation: Jesus uses an unusual method to initiate the healing. By mixing saliva with dust to create clay and applying it to the blind man’s eyes, He echoes the original creation account where God formed man from the dust of the ground (Genesis 2:7). It symbolizes an act of re-creation for the defective eyes.

Verse: And said unto him Go wash in the pool of Siloam (which is by interpretation Sent.) He went his way therefore and washed and came seeing.
English Explanation: Jesus tests the blind man’s faith and obedience by commanding him to go and wash in the pool of Siloam. The name Siloam means “Sent,” pointing prophetically to Jesus Himself, who was sent by the Father. The man demonstrates active faith by obeying the command, and as a result of his obedience, his sight is fully restored.

John 9:8
Verse: The neighbours therefore and they which before had seen him that he was blind said Is not this he that sat and begged?
English Explanation: The transformation is so profound that it sparks confusion and debate among those who knew him best. The neighbors and townspeople, accustomed to seeing him daily as a helpless, stationary beggar, find it difficult to reconcile his past state with his new, sighted reality.

Verse: Some said This is he others said He is like him but he said I am he.

The healed man settles the dispute with a direct, personal confirmation: “I am he.”

John 9:10
Verse: Therefore said they unto him How were thine eyes opened?
English Explanation: Once his identity is established, the people naturally ask about the mechanism of the miracle. They are eager to know the details of how a person born blind could suddenly obtain physical sight, prompting him to share his testimony.
