English Explanation

1. The Meaning of “They laded their asses”

The expression “laded their asses” means that the brothers loaded their donkeys with the grain they had obtained in Egypt. In the language of the King James Bible, “asses” refers to donkeys, which were commonly used for carrying heavy loads.

The brothers had come to Egypt because their families needed food. The famine had made grain difficult to obtain in Canaan, so they traveled a considerable distance to Egypt in search of provisions.

Their donkeys were therefore loaded with something extremely valuable: food that could help sustain their households during the famine.

2. The Meaning of “the corn”

The word “corn” in this passage does not necessarily mean maize as the word is commonly understood today. In the older English of the KJV, “corn” can refer generally to grain or harvested cereal.

Egypt had stored grain during the years of abundance because Joseph, under Pharaoh’s authority, had prepared the nation for the coming famine. Genesis 41 explains that Joseph had gathered and stored large quantities of food during the seven years of plenty.

When the famine arrived, people from surrounding countries came to Egypt to purchase grain. Joseph’s brothers were among those who came.

3. They departed from Egypt

After obtaining the grain, the brothers began their journey back toward Canaan. The words “and departed thence” simply mean that they left the place where they had been.

However, their departure was not the end of the story. In fact, it was the beginning of another important stage.

They believed they were simply returning home with food. They did not yet understand the full purpose of what had happened. Joseph knew who they were, but they did not know Joseph.

This creates dramatic tension in the story. The brothers were traveling away from Egypt while unknowingly carrying the grain provided through the authority of the brother they had once rejected.

4. Joseph’s brothers were experiencing the consequences of the past

The story of Genesis 42 is closely connected to what happened to Joseph many years earlier.

Joseph had been hated by his brothers because of jealousy and resentment. They had sold him, and he eventually ended up in Egypt. Through many difficult circumstances, Joseph rose to a position of great authority.

Now the famine had brought the brothers before Joseph.

Genesis 42:26 does not directly mention their past sin, but the reader knows the history. This makes the simple act of loading the grain much more meaningful.

The brothers were physically leaving Egypt, but they could not escape the consequences of their earlier actions. Their past would soon come back into the conversation.

5. God was working through difficult circumstances

The story also demonstrates how God can work through circumstances that people do not understand.

Joseph’s journey to Egypt had originally appeared to be a tragedy. His brothers had betrayed him, and he had suffered because of their actions. Yet God used Joseph’s position in Egypt to preserve many lives during the famine.

The brothers now depended on the very system that existed because of Joseph’s earlier rise to power.

This does not make their earlier wrongdoing acceptable. Instead, the larger story shows that human wrongdoing cannot prevent God from accomplishing His purposes.

6. A physical journey and a spiritual journey

The brothers were making a physical journey from Egypt back to Canaan, but they were also beginning a spiritual and moral journey.

Their attitudes would soon be tested. They would have to confront questions about Joseph, their responsibility toward Benjamin, and their relationship with their father Jacob.

The events surrounding this journey would eventually bring them to repentance and reconciliation.

Genesis 42:26 therefore sits within a larger story about sin, consequences, repentance, forgiveness, and restoration.

“And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence.”

1. “Laded their asses”

“Laded their asses”

2. “Corn”

“and departed thence.”

5. God

Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 42:26

1. God can work through difficult circumstances

2. Past actions have consequences

3. Provision can come through unexpected ways

4. Repentance can lead toward restoration
