English Explanation of Genesis 46:6
Genesis 46:6 begins with the words, “And they took their cattle, and their goods.” This tells us that Jacob’s household brought their possessions with them when they traveled to Egypt. Their cattle were particularly important because livestock represented wealth, food, and the ability to continue family life in a new land.
Jacob and his family had acquired these possessions in Canaan. They were not leaving behind everything they owned and beginning completely empty-handed. They carried with them the material possessions that God had allowed them to have.
The verse then says that these things had been “gotten in the land of Canaan.” Canaan was the land associated with the promises given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jacob had lived there for many years, and leaving it was therefore a significant step.
At this point, however, the famine had created a serious need. Egypt had food because Joseph, through God’s providence, had prepared the nation for the years of famine. Jacob’s family therefore traveled to Egypt where Joseph could provide for them.
One of the most important parts of this verse is the phrase “Jacob, and all his seed with him.” The word “seed” in this context refers to Jacob’s descendants and household. The emphasis is on the family as a whole.
Jacob’s journey was connected to Joseph’s remarkable story. Joseph had once been sold by his brothers and taken into Egypt. What appeared to be a terrible event eventually became part of God’s providential plan. Joseph rose to a position of authority and was able to preserve many lives during the famine, including the lives of his own family.
Genesis 46:6 therefore reminds readers that God can work through circumstances that people do not initially understand. Joseph’s brothers had intended harm when they sold him, but God used Joseph’s life in Egypt to accomplish a greater purpose.
This verse also demonstrates the importance of family unity. Jacob did not go to Egypt simply to see Joseph for a short visit. His entire household traveled with him. The family was entering a new chapter together.
The verse also has significance in the larger biblical story. Jacob’s descendants would eventually become the nation of Israel. Their time in Egypt would later include both suffering and remarkable deliverance. In this sense, Genesis 46:6 stands at the beginning of an important period in Israel’s history.
Another lesson concerns obedience and trust. Jacob had initially been deeply distressed when he heard that Joseph was alive. Eventually, after receiving assurance from God, Jacob traveled toward Egypt. His movement demonstrates trust in God’s direction even though he could not see everything that would happen in the future.
The verse also reminds believers that possessions are temporary while God’s purposes continue through generations. Jacob took his cattle and goods with him, but the most important thing he carried was his family and the promise that God had made concerning his descendants.
Genesis 46:6 is therefore more than a record of travel. It connects Jacob’s family history with God’s continuing purpose. The movement from Canaan to Egypt became an important part of the story that would eventually lead to the Exodus and the formation of Israel as a nation.
Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 46:6
1. God works through changing circumstances
Jacob’s circumstances changed dramatically. He had once believed that Joseph was dead, but he eventually discovered that Joseph was alive and ruling in Egypt. The family then moved because of the famine.
Life can contain unexpected changes, but this passage shows that changing circumstances do not mean that God’s purposes have disappeared.
2. Family can be part of God’s greater purpose
The verse repeatedly emphasizes Jacob and his descendants. God’s promises to the patriarchs involved not only individuals but also generations.
The family that entered Egypt would eventually become a great people. This reminds readers that God’s work can extend far beyond one person’s lifetime.
3. Material possessions have a proper place
Jacob brought his cattle and goods with him. Scripture does not present possessions themselves as evil. The important question is how people view and use what they possess.
Jacob’s possessions were useful during his journey, but the lasting significance of his journey was connected to his family and God’s promises.
4. God’s providence can be seen over many years
Joseph’s journey to Egypt had begun under painful circumstances. Years later, that same journey became the means by which Joseph was positioned to save his family from famine.
The story encourages readers to look at God’s work over time rather than judging everything from one moment.
5. God’s promises continue through generations
Jacob was not traveling merely as an individual. He was carrying forward a family through whom God’s covenant promises would continue.
This gives Genesis 46:6 a broader importance within the Bible. The journey of Jacob’s family eventually becomes part of the history of the nation of Israel.
