English Explanation

“And Judah spake unto him”

Judah was one of Jacob’s sons and one of the brothers who had previously gone to Egypt to purchase food. In this conversation, Judah speaks directly to his father, Jacob.

Judah’s role becomes increasingly important throughout the Joseph narrative. Earlier, the brothers had acted together in the terrible matter concerning Joseph. Now, however, Judah begins to show greater responsibility toward his family, particularly toward Benjamin.

By speaking to Jacob, Judah is attempting to make his father understand the seriousness of the situation. The family needed food, but obtaining more food required another journey to Egypt.

“The man did solemnly protest unto us”

The expression “solemnly protest” means that the Egyptian ruler had spoken very seriously and firmly. This was not an informal suggestion or a request that could easily be ignored.

From the brothers’ perspective, the Egyptian governor had made his requirement unmistakably clear. They could not simply return to Egypt and expect another supply of grain while ignoring his command.

The statement also shows why Judah is insisting that Benjamin must accompany them. The brothers had already explained to the Egyptian ruler that they had another younger brother at home. The ruler had responded by making Benjamin’s presence a condition for their next appearance.

Judah therefore reminds Jacob that the matter is beyond their personal choice. If they wanted to purchase food, they had to obey the condition that had been given to them.

“Ye shall not see my face”

The phrase “see my face” means to appear before the ruler or have an audience with him.

Joseph had authority over the distribution of grain in Egypt. Because the famine was severe, access to food was controlled, and Joseph had already questioned the brothers carefully about their family.

The statement emphasizes the seriousness of the situation. The brothers could not simply walk into Egypt and purchase grain whenever they wanted. They needed permission to appear before the Egyptian authority, and that permission was connected to Benjamin.

“Except your brother be with you”

This is the central point of the verse. The brothers could not return without Benjamin.

For Jacob, this was extremely difficult. Benjamin was precious to him because Benjamin was the younger son of Rachel. Jacob had already lost Joseph, and he feared losing Benjamin as well.

Jacob’s hesitation was therefore understandable from a human perspective. He was not simply refusing to send a son on an ordinary journey. He was afraid that something might happen to Benjamin, just as he believed something terrible had happened to Joseph.

Judah, however, understood that there was no practical alternative. If Benjamin stayed home, the family could not obtain more food from Egypt. The famine made the situation increasingly urgent.

The Spiritual Lesson of Genesis 43:3

Genesis 43:3 teaches about responsibility, difficult decisions, and trust during circumstances that people cannot control.

Sometimes a person may face a situation in which every available choice is difficult. Jacob did not want to send Benjamin away, while Judah understood that the family needed food. Neither the famine nor the Egyptian ruler’s condition could simply be ignored.

The verse therefore reminds readers that difficult circumstances can require courage and responsibility. Judah does not hide the facts from Jacob. He explains exactly what the Egyptian ruler had said.

There is also an important lesson about consequences. The brothers’ earlier actions concerning Joseph had created a complicated family history. Years later, circumstances brought them back into a situation involving another son of Rachel. The story demonstrates how events can unfold over many years and how God can work through circumstances that people do not fully understand at the time.

Judah’s Growing Responsibility

Judah becomes increasingly important in the chapters that follow. In Genesis 43, he is willing to take responsibility for Benjamin. Later, his concern for Benjamin becomes even more evident when he speaks to Joseph.

This represents a significant development in Judah’s character.

Previously, Judah had participated in the events that separated Joseph from his father. Now he begins acting as a protector of Benjamin and as a representative of the family.

Genesis 43:3 therefore forms part of a larger transformation in the story. The brothers who once contributed to Joseph’s suffering are gradually placed in circumstances where their character and responsibility are tested.

Jacob’s Fear and the Need for Trust

Jacob’s reaction to Benjamin’s situation is also important. His fear came from his previous suffering. He had lost Joseph and believed that Joseph was dead. Because of that experience, he was reluctant to risk Benjamin.

This shows how past pain can influence present decisions.

Yet the story eventually moves Jacob toward a deeper trust in God. Although Jacob could not see what God was accomplishing through Joseph, the reader knows that Joseph was alive and had been elevated to a position of great authority in Egypt.

This creates a powerful biblical theme: people may see only part of their circumstances, while God’s purposes may extend far beyond what they can presently understand.

Connection to the Story of Joseph

Genesis 43:3 is part of the larger narrative leading toward the reunion of Joseph and Benjamin.

Joseph’s brothers had come to Egypt because of the famine. Joseph recognized them, but they did not recognize him. He required them to bring Benjamin, creating a situation in which the family would eventually be brought together again.

The command that Benjamin must come is therefore not merely a logistical detail. It is an important step in God’s providential movement of the story.

The famine brought Jacob’s family to Egypt. Joseph’s position in Egypt provided the food they needed. Benjamin’s required presence eventually brought Joseph face-to-face with the brother he had not seen since his youth.

Practical Lessons for Believers

1. Be honest about difficult circumstances

Judah clearly explained the situation to Jacob. He did not pretend that they could solve the problem without Benjamin.

Honesty is important when dealing with difficult family or personal situations.

2. Take responsibility

Judah increasingly demonstrates responsibility for Benjamin. His later actions show that responsibility is not merely about words but about being willing to accept personal consequences for someone else.

3. Do not allow fear to control every decision

Jacob’s fear was understandable, but fear alone could not solve the family’s problem. The story eventually required him to release Benjamin into the situation.

Believers can acknowledge fear while still learning to trust God.

4. Remember that God can work through circumstances we do not understand

At this point in the story, Jacob did not know the full truth about Joseph. He could not see how the events in Egypt would eventually lead to the restoration of his family.

The narrative reminds us that God’s purposes may be developing even when circumstances appear confusing.

“And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.”

“And Judah spake unto him”

“The man did solemnly protest unto us”

“Ye shall not see my face”

“Except your brother be with you”
