English Explanation

“And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord?”

Judah begins with a question: “What shall we say unto my lord?”

The brothers have been placed in a situation where they have no convincing defense. They had searched their sacks confidently because they believed none of them had stolen Joseph’s cup. However, the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

Judah therefore recognizes the seriousness of the situation. Instead of responding with anger or making an aggressive accusation, he approaches Joseph with humility.

His words show that the brothers understand that they are standing before someone with authority. Judah does not try to make the situation worse. He speaks carefully and respectfully.

“What shall we speak?”

Judah continues by asking what they can possibly say.

This question expresses helplessness. The brothers had previously declared that the person who possessed the cup should be punished. Now the cup has been discovered in Benjamin’s sack.

They cannot easily explain what happened.

The situation also exposes an important spiritual truth: human beings may sometimes believe that they can hide their actions, but wrongdoing eventually has consequences.

The brothers had hidden their sin concerning Joseph for many years. They had deceived their father Jacob and allowed him to believe that Joseph was dead. Now, years later, they find themselves facing a crisis that reminds them of their former actions.

“Or how shall we clear ourselves?”

This is one of the most powerful statements in the verse.

Judah asks how they can clear themselves. He realizes that their position is extremely difficult.

The phrase does not necessarily mean that they are admitting that they personally stole Joseph’s cup. Rather, Judah is recognizing that they have no adequate explanation for the situation and no obvious way to defend themselves.

The brothers had previously acted with confidence. Now their confidence has disappeared.

Their experience demonstrates how quickly circumstances can change. A person may feel secure one moment and completely helpless the next.

“God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants”

Judah then says something much deeper:

“God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants.”

This statement connects the present crisis with the brothers’ past sin.

Years earlier, they had committed a terrible wrong against Joseph. They had sold him and allowed their father to suffer because of his apparent death. Although they had hidden their actions from Jacob, they could not hide them from God.

Judah’s words suggest that the brothers now understand that their past wrongdoing has not simply disappeared.

There is an important spiritual lesson here: hidden wrongdoing is never truly hidden from God.

People may conceal things from other people, but God sees the heart and knows what has happened. Genesis 44 shows the brothers beginning to confront the consequences of their past.

“Behold, we are my lord’s servants”

Judah then declares that they are Joseph’s servants.

This demonstrates submission.

Instead of demanding their freedom or attempting to escape, Judah accepts the authority of the Egyptian ruler. The brothers are willing to place themselves under Joseph’s judgment.

This humility is important because it contrasts with their earlier behavior toward Joseph.

When Joseph was young, his brothers had treated him harshly and sold him. Now Judah is willing to humble himself before the very person whom he does not yet recognize as Joseph.

The story therefore shows a transformation taking place in Judah.

“Both we, and he also with whom the cup is found”

Judah includes Benjamin in his statement.

Benjamin is Joseph’s younger brother and the son of Rachel. Jacob had become especially protective of Benjamin because he had already lost Joseph.

Judah understands that allowing Benjamin to remain in Egypt would devastate their father. Therefore, he does not simply think about his own safety.

This moment prepares the way for Judah’s powerful speech in the following verses, where he offers himself in Benjamin’s place.

Judah’s actions show a major change from his earlier behavior. Previously, Judah had participated in Joseph’s sale. Now he is prepared to sacrifice his own freedom for Benjamin.

Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 44:16

1. God sees what people cannot see

Judah says that God has found out their iniquity. The brothers had hidden their past actions from their father, but their history was known to God.

This reminds believers that God sees both public actions and private decisions. Nothing is outside His knowledge.

2. Sin eventually has consequences

The brothers had lived for years after selling Joseph. Their lives continued, but their past had not simply disappeared.

Genesis 44 shows how their present circumstances forced them to confront the consequences of what they had done.

This does not mean that every difficult circumstance is necessarily punishment for a particular sin. However, Scripture repeatedly teaches that wrongdoing has consequences and that people should not assume that hidden actions are meaningless.

3. Humility is better than pride

Judah does not approach Joseph with arrogance. He asks what they can say and how they can defend themselves.

Humility allows a person to acknowledge weakness and accept responsibility.

4. True change can be seen in actions

Judah’s transformation is not merely expressed through words.

His later willingness to remain in Benjamin’s place demonstrates genuine concern for his family.

Earlier, Judah had been involved in Joseph’s suffering. Now he is prepared to suffer himself to protect Benjamin.

5. Family responsibility matters

Judah understands the effect Benjamin’s situation will have on Jacob.

He does not consider only his own interests. He thinks about his father’s suffering and Benjamin’s future.

This teaches the importance of caring for family members, especially when they are vulnerable.

Urdu Explanation

“And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord?”

“What shall we speak?”

“Or how shall we clear ourselves?”

“God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants”

“Behold, we are my lord’s servants”

“Both we, and he also with whom the cup is found”

Genesis 44:16 — Main Message

God sees hidden things, wrongdoing has consequences, humility is important, and genuine repentance can produce a changed life.
