Acts 14:4

Acts 14:5

Acts 14:6

  • Verse Text: They were ware of it and fled unto Lystra and Derbe cities of Lycaonia and unto the region that lieth round about

  • English Explanation: Upon discovering the violent plot against them, Paul and Barnabas exercised wisdom rather than looking for unnecessary martyrdom. They escaped the city and traveled south to the region of Lycaonia, seeking refuge and continuing their work in the safer cities of Lystra and Derbe.

Acts 14:7

  • Verse Text: And there they preached the gospel

Acts 14:8

  • Verse Text: And there sat a certain man at Lystra impotent in his feet being a cripple from his mother’s womb who never had walked

  • English Explanation: In Lystra, the narrative introduces a man who had suffered from absolute physical disability since birth. His condition was humanly incurable, emphasizing that any restoration would require an undeniable, supernatural move of God.

  • Urdu Explanation: لسترہ میں ایک ایسے آدمی کا ذکر ملتا ہے جو پیدائشی طور پر دونوں پاؤں سے معذور تھا۔ انسانی لحاظ سے اس کا علاج ناممکن تھا جو اس بات کو ظاہر کرتا ہے کہ اس کی شفا کے لیے خدا کی مافوق الفطرت قدرت کی ضرورت تھی۔

Acts 14:9

  • Verse Text: The same heard Paul speak who stedfastly beholding him and perceiving that he had faith to be healed

  • English Explanation: The lame man listened intently to Paul’s preaching. Guided by the Holy Spirit, Paul looked directly at him and discerned that the spiritual truth had taken root in the man’s heart, granting him the faith necessary to receive physical healing.

Acts 14:10

  • Verse Text: Said with a loud voice Stand upright on thy feet And he leaped and walked

  • English Explanation: Demonstrating apostolic authority, Paul commanded the man to stand up. Instantly, the man’s lifelong physical limits vanished; he didn’t just struggle to his feet, but dynamically leaped up and began walking normally for the first time.

  • Urdu Explanation: رسولی اختیار کا مظاہرہ کرتے ہوئے پولس نے بلند آواز سے اس آدمی کو اپنے پاؤں پر سیدھا کھڑے ہونے کا حکم دیا۔ اسی لمحے اس کی پیدائشی معذوری ختم ہو گئی اور وہ نہ صرف کھڑا ہوا بلکہ اچھلا اور پہلی بار عام انسانوں کی طرح چلنے لگا۔

Acts 14:11

  • Verse Text: And when the people saw what Paul had done they lifted up their voices saying in the speech of Lycaonia The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men

  • English Explanation: The local pagan crowd was astonished by the miracle. Speaking in their regional Lycaonian dialect, they misinterpreted the source of the miracle, assuming that ancient gods had materialized in human form to visit them.

  • Urdu Explanation: مقامی مشرک عوام اس معجزے کو دیکھ کر دنگ رہ گئے۔ انہوں نے اپنی مقامی زبان میں بات کرتے ہوئے معجزے کے اصل سرچشمے کو غلط سمجھا اور فرض کر لیا کہ قدیم دیوتا انسانوں کا روپ دھار کر ان کے پاس زمین پر اتر آئے ہیں۔

Acts 14:12

  • Verse Text: And they called Barnabas Jupiter and Paul Mercurius because he was the chief speaker

  • English Explanation: In line with Roman-Greek mythology, they identified Barnabas as Jupiter (Zeus), the quiet and dignified leader of the gods. They named Paul Mercurius (Hermes), the messenger god, because Paul was the primary preacher and speaker.

  • Urdu Explanation: رومی و یونانی مالا مالا (دیومالا) کے مطابق انہوں نے برنباس کو جوپیٹر (زیوس) کا نام دیا جو دیوتاؤں کا پروقار رہنما مانا جاتا تھا اور پولس کو مرکری (ہرمیس) کہا کیونکہ وہ پیغام پہنچانے والا اور بنیادی مقرر تھا۔

Acts 14:13

  • Verse Text: Then the priest of Jupiter which was before their city brought oxen and garlands unto the gates and would have done sacrifice with the people

  • English Explanation: The local religious infrastructure reacted quickly. The priest from the nearby temple of Jupiter brought sacrificial bulls and ceremonial flowers to the city gates, intending to lead the community in offering pagan worship to Paul and Barnabas.

Acts 14:14

  • Verse Text: Which when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of they rent their clothes and ran in among the people crying out

  • English Explanation: When the apostles finally understood what was happening, they reacted with grief and horror at the blasphemy. Tearing one’s clothes was a traditional Jewish expression of profound distress and indignation against idolatry. They rushed into the crowd to halt the proceedings.

Acts 14:15

  • Verse Text: And saying Sirs why do ye these things We also are men of like passions with you and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God which made heaven and earth and the sea and all things that are therein

  • English Explanation: The apostles forcefully corrected the crowd, insisting they were mere mortal men with the same human vulnerabilities. They explained that their entire mission was to guide people away from useless idols (vanities) toward the true, Living Creator of the universe.

Acts 14:16

  • Verse Text: Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways

  • English Explanation: Paul pointed out that in previous generations, God allowed pagan nations to live according to their own limited understanding and choices without giving them direct prophetic revelations like He gave to Israel.

  • Urdu Explanation: پولس نے یہ واضح کیا کہ ماضی کی نسلوں میں خدا نے غیر قوموں کو ان کی اپنی محدود سمجھ اور مرضی کے مطابق چلنے کی اجازت دی اور اسرائیل کی طرح ان پر براہ راست انبیاء کے ذریعے شریعت نازک نہیں کی تھی۔

Acts 14:17

  • Verse Text: Nevertheless he left not himself without witness in that he did good and gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons filling our hearts with food and gladness

  • Explanation: Even without written scriptures, God provided a continuous witness of His existence through creation and providence. His goodness is visible in regular rainfall, successful harvests, and the natural provisions that sustain human life and happiness.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس کے باوجود خدا نے کبھی بھی خود کو گواہی کے بغیر نہیں چھوڑا۔ اس کی ہستی کا ثبوت قدرت کے نظام سے ملتا ہے جیسے کہ آسمان سے بارش برسانا، فصلیں اگانا، اور انسانوں کو خوراک اور خوشی فراہم کر کے اپنی بھلائی ظاہر کرنا۔

Acts 14:18

  • Verse Text: And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people that they had not done sacrifice unto them

  • English Explanation: Despite these logical and passionate arguments about the true God, Paul and Barnabas barely managed to stop the enthusiastic crowd from offering sacrifices to them. The community was heavily steeped in pagan tradition.

Acts 14:19

  • Verse Text: And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium who persuaded the people and having stoned Paul drew him out of the city supposing he had been dead

  • English Explanation: The emotional atmosphere flipped completely when hostile Jewish opponents arrived from Antioch and Iconium. They manipulated the fickle crowd, turning them against Paul. The mob stoned Paul, dragged his body out of the city gates, and abandoned him, believing he was dead.

Acts 14:20

  • Verse Text: Howbeit as the disciples stood round about him he rose up and came into the city and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe

  • English Explanation: While the local believers gathered around Paul’s battered body—likely praying for him—he miraculously stood up and walked back into the very city that had rejected him. The following day, he and Barnabas left for Derbe to continue their work.

Acts 14:21

  • Verse Text: And when they had preached the gospel to that city and had taught many they returned again to Lystra and to Iconium and Antioch

Brave and committed, they returned directly to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch—the dangerous cities where they had just faced intense persecution.

Acts 14:22

  • Verse Text: Confirming the souls of the disciples and exhorting them to continue in the faith and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God

  • English Explanation: During their return visits, the apostles focused on strengthening and encouraging the new converts. They explicitly taught them that hardship, trials, and persecution are normal elements of the Christian journey toward the full realization of God’s Kingdom.

Acts 14:23

  • Verse Text: And when they had ordained them elders in every church and had prayed with fasting they commended them to the Lord on whom they believed

Acts 14:25

  • Verse Text: And when they had preached the word in Perga they went down into Attalia

  • English Explanation: They stopped in the city of Perga to deliver the Christian message. Afterward, they moved further down to the port city of Attalia to secure maritime transportation.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے پرگہ شہر میں قیام کیا تاکہ وہاں کلام کی منادی کریں۔ اس کے بعد وہ اتالیہ کے ساحلی شہر پہنچے تاکہ بحری سفر کا انتظام کر سکیں۔

Acts 14:26

  • Verse Text: And thence sailed to Antioch from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled

  • English Explanation: From Attalia, they boarded a ship and sailed back to Syrian Antioch, their home base. This was the specific church community that had originally prayed over them and sent them out under God’s grace to complete this first missionary journey.

Acts 14:27

  • Verse Text: And when they were come and had gathered the church together they rehearsed all that God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles

Acts 14:28

Chapter 15

Acts 15:1

  • Verse Text: And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren and said Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses ye cannot be saved

  • English Explanation: The peace in Antioch was disrupted when legalistic Jewish Christians arrived from Judea. They began teaching a controversial doctrine: that Gentile believers could not truly be saved unless they underwent circumcision and submitted to the traditional ritual laws of Moses.

Acts 15:2

  • Verse Text: When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain other of them should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question

Acts 15:4

Acts 15:5

  • Verse Text: But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed saying That it was needful to circumcise them and to command them to keep the law of Moses
