English Explanation
Exodus 5:22 records an important moment in the life of Moses. After Moses obeyed God’s command and went before Pharaoh, the situation of the Israelites became even more difficult. Pharaoh responded to Moses’ request by increasing the workload of the Israelites. Instead of allowing them to go into the wilderness to worship God, Pharaoh commanded them to make bricks without being provided with the necessary straw. The Israelites were forced to gather their own straw while still being required to produce the same number of bricks.
The suffering of the people therefore became more severe. The Israelite officers blamed Moses and Aaron, saying that they had made Pharaoh and his servants angry with them. Moses then returned to the LORD with an honest and deeply troubled question.
Moses Brought His Confusion to God
The opening words, “And Moses returned unto the LORD,” are significant. Moses did not simply walk away from his calling when things became difficult. He went back to God.
Moses had obeyed God’s command. He had approached Pharaoh and delivered the message that Israel should be allowed to go and worship. Yet the immediate result appeared to be the opposite of what Moses expected.
This teaches an important spiritual principle: obedience to God does not always mean that circumstances immediately become easier. Sometimes a person may faithfully follow God’s direction and still experience opposition, disappointment, or confusion.
Moses shows that it is possible to bring difficult questions before God. He did not hide his frustration. He spoke directly and honestly.
“Wherefore Hast Thou So Evil Entreated This People?”
Moses asked, “Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people?”
Moses was looking at the suffering of the Israelites and struggling to understand why their condition had become worse. From his human perspective, the situation seemed to have deteriorated because he had obeyed God’s command.
This question reveals the emotional pressure Moses was experiencing. He had accepted the responsibility of confronting Pharaoh, but now the people were suffering more severely.
Moses was not merely concerned about himself. His concern was for “this people.” He cared about the Israelites and felt the weight of their suffering.
The verse therefore gives readers an honest picture of leadership. A person who accepts a responsibility may sometimes feel overwhelmed when the people depending on that person experience hardship.
“Why Is It That Thou Hast Sent Me?”
Moses continued by asking, “why is it that thou hast sent me?”
This question reflects Moses’ confusion about his calling. God had sent him to Pharaoh with the purpose of bringing Israel out of Egypt. But Moses had obeyed, and Pharaoh had responded by making the Israelites’ work harder.
Moses could not yet see how God’s purpose would be accomplished.
The important point is that the story did not end with Pharaoh’s reaction. Exodus 5 describes the immediate conflict, while the following chapters reveal God’s continuing work. What Moses could not understand at that moment, God had not abandoned.
A Lesson About Faith During Difficult Circumstances
Exodus 5:22 is valuable because it shows that faith can include questions. Moses was confused, distressed, and disappointed, but he brought those feelings directly to God.
The verse does not teach that every difficult circumstance means God has abandoned His people. Instead, it shows that God’s servants may sometimes struggle to understand His timing and methods.
There can be a difference between what a person sees in the present moment and what God is accomplishing through the larger story.
Moses saw increased suffering. God was working toward Israel’s deliverance. Moses saw Pharaoh’s resistance. God knew what would happen next.
This is one of the central themes of the Exodus narrative: God’s purposes continue even when circumstances temporarily appear to move in the opposite direction.
Moses’ Honest Prayer
Another important lesson is the value of honest prayer. Moses did not use complicated language. He simply expressed what was troubling him.
His prayer demonstrates that people can bring confusion, sorrow, questions, and disappointment before God. Prayer is not limited to moments when everything is going well.
When Moses did not understand the situation, he returned to God. That is significant. Instead of allowing frustration to completely separate him from God, he directed his frustration toward God in prayer.
For readers today, Exodus 5:22 can therefore serve as encouragement during seasons of uncertainty. When circumstances seem confusing, a person can continue seeking God while honestly acknowledging the difficulty.
The Context of Exodus 5:22
Earlier in Exodus, God had promised that He would deliver Israel from Egyptian bondage. Moses was chosen to communicate God’s message to Pharaoh.
However, Pharaoh rejected the request and increased the Israelites’ burden. The people then became discouraged and blamed Moses and Aaron.
Moses faced a painful situation: the very people he had been sent to help were now suffering more because of Pharaoh’s response.
Exodus 5:22 captures Moses’ reaction before the next stage of God’s answer.
This is important because the verse should not be isolated from the surrounding passage. Exodus 5 describes a crisis, but the larger Exodus account demonstrates that the crisis was not the final outcome.
Hope Beyond the Immediate Problem
One of the strongest lessons from Exodus 5:22 is that a difficult chapter is not necessarily the conclusion of the story.
Moses could not see the entire future. He only knew what had happened so far. God, however, knew what He was going to accomplish.
This principle can encourage readers who are facing situations they do not understand. A setback does not automatically mean that God’s purpose has failed.
The Exodus story continues with God’s renewed assurance to Moses. God explains that Pharaoh will eventually let Israel go, and the deliverance of the Israelites becomes one of the central events of biblical history.
Therefore, Exodus 5:22 can be understood as a verse about honest faith during a difficult season. Moses struggled to understand what was happening, but he returned to the LORD.
“And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?”
“And Moses returned unto the LORD”
“Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people?”
“why is it that thou hast sent me?”
