English Explanation
Ruth 1:5 is a short but deeply significant verse that describes the second great loss experienced by Naomi after her family left Bethlehem and settled in the land of Moab. The verse says that Mahlon and Chilion also died, leaving Naomi without her husband or her two sons. This moment changes the direction of the story and prepares the way for the remarkable relationship between Naomi and Ruth.
The Book of Ruth begins during a time of famine in Bethlehem. Elimelech, Naomi, and their two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, went to Moab in search of food and security. After arriving there, Elimelech died. Naomi was then left with her two sons. Mahlon and Chilion married Moabite women, Ruth and Orpah. However, after approximately ten years, both sons also died.
The words “both of them” emphasize that Naomi experienced the loss of both of her children. The situation was therefore extremely difficult. She had already lost her husband, and now she had lost the two sons who would ordinarily have been an important source of family support.
The final part of the verse says, “and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.” The expression emphasizes Naomi’s loneliness. She had entered Moab as part of a family, but she was now facing life without her husband and children.
Naomi’s Experience of Loss
Naomi’s story reminds readers that biblical narratives do not hide the painful realities of human life. The Book of Ruth openly presents grief, uncertainty, widowhood, and family loss. Naomi’s circumstances appeared to have become very difficult.
Yet Ruth 1:5 is not the end of Naomi’s story. It is actually the beginning of a new chapter. Although Naomi had lost her husband and sons, God had not abandoned her. A relationship that might initially have seemed small and ordinary—her relationship with Ruth—would become extremely important.
This is one of the important lessons of the passage: a painful chapter is not necessarily the final chapter.
The Importance of Ruth
Naomi’s daughter-in-law Ruth becomes especially important after the deaths of Mahlon and Chilion. Ruth could have returned to her own people, but she chose to remain with Naomi.
The following verses show Ruth’s remarkable commitment. She was willing to leave behind her homeland and accompany Naomi to Bethlehem. Her decision eventually became one of the most memorable demonstrations of loyalty in Scripture.
Ruth’s presence also demonstrates how God can work through relationships during difficult seasons. Naomi had suffered tremendous loss, but she was not completely alone. Ruth remained beside her.
A Story of Providence
The Book of Ruth repeatedly demonstrates God’s providence. Providence refers to God’s continuing care and guidance in the circumstances of life. In Ruth 1:5, the situation looks extremely bleak. Naomi has lost her husband and both sons. From a human perspective, there seems to be little reason for hope.
However, the story continues. Naomi and Ruth return to Bethlehem, where Ruth eventually meets Boaz. Boaz becomes an important figure in their lives, and the story eventually leads to the birth of Obed, who becomes the father of Jesse and the grandfather of David.
Therefore, Ruth 1:5 should be read within the larger story. The verse records genuine grief, but it also stands at the beginning of a chain of events through which God’s purposes unfold.
A Lesson About Grief
This verse also gives an important biblical picture of grief. Naomi does not immediately understand what God is doing. Her circumstances are painful and confusing. The later chapters show that she eventually experiences restoration and joy.
For readers today, the passage can serve as a reminder that grief is a real part of human experience. Scripture does not suggest that people should pretend that loss does not hurt. Instead, the story allows Naomi’s suffering to be seen while also showing that hope can eventually emerge from difficult circumstances.
Hope Beyond Circumstances
One of the strongest themes connected with Ruth 1:5 is the contrast between loss and future hope. At this point, Naomi could not see how her story would develop. She only knew what she had lost.
The reader, however, knows that the story is moving toward restoration.
This provides an important spiritual lesson. People often see only one part of their circumstances at a time. What appears to be an ending may sometimes become the beginning of something unexpected. God’s purposes can continue even when circumstances seem completely changed.
Ruth 1:5 therefore prepares readers for one of the central themes of the Book of Ruth: faithfulness, redemption, restoration, and God’s providential care.
“And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.”
“Both of them” کا مطلب
“Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them.”
“and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.”
