English Explanation
Ruth 1:2 introduces the main family at the beginning of the story of Ruth. The verse gives the names of the husband, wife, and two sons: Elimelech, Naomi, Mahlon, and Chilion. It also identifies their home as Bethlehemjudah and tells us that they traveled to the country of Moab, where they remained for a period of time.
Elimelech and Naomi
The man’s name was Elimelech, and his wife’s name was Naomi. They were from Bethlehemjudah, a place in the land of Israel. Bethlehem was an important town in biblical history and would later become especially significant in the story of David and, according to the New Testament, the birthplace of Jesus Christ.
At this point in the story, however, Bethlehem was experiencing famine. Ruth 1:1 explains that the events happened during the days when the judges ruled and that there was a famine in the land. Because of this difficult situation, Elimelech and his family left Bethlehem and went to Moab.
The verse therefore introduces a family making a difficult decision during a period of hardship. Their journey was not simply a change of residence; it became the beginning of a series of events that would profoundly change Naomi, Ruth, and the future of their family.
Mahlon and Chilion
Elimelech and Naomi had two sons named Mahlon and Chilion. The verse specifically identifies them as Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. Their family identity and place of origin are important because the story later returns repeatedly to their connection with Bethlehem.
The Bible often introduces people by name before describing events that become important later. Here, these names help the reader follow the family through the difficult circumstances that follow.
Mahlon and Chilion were young members of a family that had left their homeland because of famine. Their experience also demonstrates how circumstances can lead people into unfamiliar places and situations.
The Journey to Moab
The family “came into the country of Moab.” Moab was located east of the Dead Sea and was outside the land of Israel. The Israelites and Moabites had a complicated history, and the relationship between the two peoples was not always peaceful.
Nevertheless, during this famine, Moab became the destination of Elimelech and his family. They were looking for a place where they could survive while food was scarce in Bethlehem.
The verse does not spend many words describing their journey. Instead, it simply states that they came to Moab and “continued there.” This short expression is important because their stay was not merely a brief visit. They settled there for a period of time.
“And Continued There”
The words “and continued there” show that the family remained in Moab. What may have begun as a temporary response to famine eventually became a significant part of their lives.
This teaches an important lesson about the uncertainty of human plans. People may make decisions because of immediate circumstances without knowing what the future will bring. Elimelech and Naomi could not have known everything that would happen after they left Bethlehem.
The story that follows contains grief, loss, loyalty, faithfulness, and restoration. The decision to travel to Moab becomes the setting in which Ruth enters the biblical story.
God’s Providence in Difficult Circumstances
Although Ruth 1:2 mainly provides background information, it contributes to one of the major themes of the book: God’s providence. The book of Ruth shows how God can work through ordinary people and difficult circumstances.
At this point, Naomi’s family appears to be simply responding to famine. Yet their journey eventually leads to Ruth becoming part of Israel and, through her marriage to Boaz, becoming an ancestor in the family line of David.
The reader can therefore see that events that initially appear ordinary or painful may become part of a much larger purpose.
A Lesson About Hard Times
This verse also reminds readers that difficult seasons can affect families in unexpected ways. Elimelech and Naomi faced famine and had to leave their home. Their experience reflects the reality that families sometimes have to make major decisions because of circumstances beyond their control.
The story does not present every decision as simple. Instead, it invites readers to follow what happens afterward. Naomi eventually experiences deep sorrow, while Ruth demonstrates remarkable loyalty. Through these events, the story moves toward hope and restoration.
Bethlehem and Moab
There is also an important contrast between Bethlehem and Moab. Bethlehem was the family’s homeland, while Moab was a foreign country. Leaving Bethlehem meant leaving familiar surroundings, relatives, and the land associated with their people.
Yet the journey to Moab became the setting for Ruth’s entrance into Naomi’s family. Later, Ruth would willingly leave Moab and travel with Naomi back to Bethlehem.
Thus, Ruth 1:2 establishes the geographical movement that is central to the opening chapters of the book: from Bethlehem to Moab, and later from Moab back to Bethlehem.
God
Spiritual Lessons from Ruth 1:2
