English Explanation
1. Ruth the Moabitess
The verse begins with the words, “And Ruth the Moabitess said.” The writer deliberately reminds the reader that Ruth was a Moabitess. She was not originally from Bethlehem or from the nation of Israel. Ruth had come from Moab with Naomi after the death of her husband.
Her background makes the kindness she received especially meaningful. Ruth was vulnerable because she was both a widow and a foreigner. Nevertheless, she had chosen to remain with Naomi and had committed herself to Naomi’s people and to the God whom Naomi worshiped.
Her circumstances did not prevent God’s providential care from working through ordinary events.
2. Ruth reported Boaz’s words accurately
Ruth told Naomi, “He said unto me also.” Ruth was carefully explaining everything that had happened in the field.
Earlier, Boaz had spoken kindly to Ruth and had instructed her to remain in his fields. Ruth did not hide these details from Naomi. She returned home and shared what she had learned.
This demonstrates the importance of communication and wisdom. Naomi could now understand that Ruth had received unusual kindness from someone who had taken notice of her situation.
3. “Thou shalt keep fast by my young men”
Boaz told Ruth to “keep fast” by his young men. In the context of the harvest, this means that Ruth was to remain close to the workers and stay within the protected working area.
For Ruth, this instruction was significant. She was not simply being permitted to gather grain wherever she wanted. Boaz was giving her a safe place among his workers.
The verse therefore shows that true kindness often includes practical protection. Boaz’s concern was not merely that Ruth receive food; he also wanted her to remain in a secure environment while she worked.
4. “Until they have ended all my harvest”
Boaz’s instruction extended throughout the harvest. Ruth was not given only a single opportunity to gather grain. She was permitted to remain in his fields until the work of the harvest was completed.
This provided Ruth and Naomi with an important source of food during a difficult season.
The phrase also illustrates the value of perseverance. Ruth continued working day after day rather than expecting everything to be solved immediately. She gathered what was available and faithfully carried out her responsibilities.
5. God’s providence through ordinary circumstances
One of the central lessons of Ruth is that God’s providence can operate through ordinary circumstances.
Ruth simply went into a field to glean. She did not know exactly what would happen. Yet she ended up in the field belonging to Boaz, a relative of Elimelech. Boaz noticed Ruth, showed her kindness, and provided protection.
Nothing in this verse suggests that Ruth understood the entire future. She was simply being faithful in the situation immediately before her.
This is an encouraging biblical principle: people may not see the complete picture of their lives, but God can work through everyday responsibilities, relationships, opportunities, and acts of kindness.
6. Ruth’s humility and diligence
Ruth had not demanded special treatment. She had gone to the field to glean among the reapers, doing humble work so that she and Naomi could have food.
Her conduct demonstrates diligence. She was willing to work hard despite her difficult circumstances.
The story therefore presents Ruth as someone who combined humility with action. She trusted God while also doing what she could to meet her responsibilities.
7. Boaz’s kindness
Boaz’s instructions also reveal his character. He recognized Ruth’s vulnerable position and made arrangements for her welfare.
His kindness was practical. He gave her access to his field, allowed her to remain near his workers, and ensured that she could gather enough grain.
Biblical kindness is often expressed through concrete actions. Words of encouragement are valuable, but genuine compassion can also involve providing protection, food, opportunity, and dignity.
8. A lesson about perseverance
The harvest did not end in one day. Ruth had to continue gathering grain.
This reminds readers that provision and progress can sometimes come gradually. Ruth did not know exactly how her story would unfold, but she continued faithfully.
Her example encourages perseverance when circumstances are difficult. A person may begin with only a small opportunity, but faithful work can become part of something much greater.
“And Ruth the Moabitess said”
“Thou shalt keep fast by my young men.”
