Detailed English Explanation
1. Boaz Came from Bethlehem
The verse begins, “And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem.”
Boaz was not merely a distant landowner. He personally came to the field where his workers were harvesting. His arrival gives us a picture of a man who was involved with what was happening on his property.
Bethlehem was also the town where Naomi and Ruth were living. Ruth had recently arrived there after leaving Moab with Naomi. At this point in the story, Ruth was a foreign woman trying to survive through the humble work of gleaning.
The meeting between Boaz and Ruth may appear ordinary, but it becomes an important turning point in the narrative. Ruth had gone into the field simply to gather leftover grain. She did not know what would happen next.
The story shows how ordinary circumstances can become significant through the providence of God.
2. Boaz Greeted His Workers
Boaz said to the reapers:
“The LORD be with you.”
His greeting is short, but it reveals something about his character. Boaz openly acknowledged God when speaking to the people who worked for him.
The workers answered:
“The LORD bless thee.”
Their response suggests that Boaz’s relationship with his workers was characterized by mutual respect. The conversation was not merely a business exchange. Their words reflected an awareness of God.
This is significant because leadership is revealed not only through major decisions but also through everyday interactions. A person’s character can often be seen in the way he speaks to people who work under his authority.
Boaz did not begin by shouting orders or displaying his wealth. He began with a blessing.
3. Boaz Noticed Ruth
After greeting his workers, Boaz asked the servant who was responsible for the reapers:
“Whose damsel is this?”
This question is central to the passage.
Ruth was a stranger in Bethlehem. She was a Moabitess, and she had entered the field to glean among people she did not previously know. Boaz noticed her and wanted to learn about her.
The question does not necessarily mean that Boaz had never seen her before in his life. Rather, he was asking about her identity and circumstances. Who was this young woman working in his field? Where did she come from? Why was she there?
The servant’s answer in the following verse explains that she was the Moabitish woman who had returned with Naomi from the country of Moab.
4. Ruth Was Not Invisible
One beautiful lesson from this passage is that Ruth was noticed.
From a human perspective, Ruth might have seemed unimportant. She was a poor widow, a foreigner, and a gleaner working behind the harvesters. Yet Boaz saw her.
The Bible frequently demonstrates that God sees people who may be overlooked by society. Ruth’s situation was difficult, but her story was not forgotten.
Her faithfulness had brought her into the field, and her humble work placed her in the path of Boaz.
5. God’s Providence in Ruth’s Story
Earlier in Ruth’s story, she went out to glean, and the narrative describes her as coming to a portion of the field belonging to Boaz.
From Ruth’s perspective, she was simply looking for somewhere she could gather grain. But the larger story shows that her steps were leading toward an important relationship and a significant future.
Ruth 2:4–5 therefore helps readers understand the theme of divine providence.
God’s providence does not always appear through dramatic miracles. Sometimes it appears through ordinary events: a person entering a field, a landowner arriving at the right moment, a conversation beginning, or someone noticing another person.
The meeting between Boaz and Ruth becomes one of those ordinary-looking moments that carries great significance.
6. Boaz’s Character Begins to Become Clear
Boaz’s behavior in these verses prepares us for what we learn about him throughout the chapter.
He was a man who respected God, treated his workers with dignity, and paid attention to what happened in his fields. His greeting and his question both provide an introduction to his character.
His wealth is mentioned earlier in Ruth, but the story does not present wealth as his most important quality. His conduct matters more.
This is an important biblical lesson: possessions and social position do not determine a person’s true character. How someone treats God and other people reveals much more.
7. A Lesson About Humility
Ruth was willing to perform humble work to provide food for herself and Naomi. She did not demand a privileged position. She went into the field and worked among the reapers.
Her humility eventually became part of the reason Boaz learned about her.
The passage encourages readers to value honest work, even when the work appears small or ordinary. Ruth’s task was physically humble, but her faithfulness was significant.
8. A Lesson About Kind Leadership
Boaz provides an example of leadership through his interaction with his workers.
A good leader does not have to be harsh in order to be respected. Boaz greeted his workers with a blessing, and they responded positively.
His example can encourage employers, teachers, parents, managers, and anyone with responsibility over others to remember the importance of respectful communication.
Words can reveal the heart of a leader.
9. “Whose Damsel Is This?”
The phrase “Whose damsel is this?” introduces a question of identity.
Ruth was not merely another person in the field. Boaz wanted to know who she was.
The question eventually leads to the story of Ruth’s faithfulness toward Naomi, her journey from Moab, and her trust in the God of Israel. What initially appears to be a simple question opens the door to a much larger story.
Sometimes an apparently small conversation can become the beginning of something important.
Spiritual Lessons from Ruth 2:4–5
God Sees Those Who Feel Overlooked
Ruth was a foreign widow working in a field, but God was not unaware of her circumstances. Her story reminds believers that difficult circumstances do not mean that God has forgotten them.
Faithfulness Matters
Ruth faithfully worked to care for Naomi. Her faithfulness was visible even before she understood what the future would bring.
Respectful Words Matter
Boaz’s greeting demonstrates that everyday words can communicate faith and kindness. A simple blessing can create an atmosphere of respect.
God Can Work Through Ordinary Events
Nothing supernatural is described in these two verses. Yet the meeting of Boaz and Ruth becomes one of the most important moments in the book.
God’s purposes can unfold through ordinary responsibilities, ordinary places, and ordinary conversations.
Character Is More Important Than Status
Boaz was wealthy and respected, while Ruth was poor and vulnerable. Yet the story gives attention to both of them because character, faithfulness, and kindness matter more than social position.
“The LORD be with you.”
“The LORD bless thee.”
“Whose damsel is this?”
1. God
