Detailed Explanation in English

“He that hath an ear, let him hear”

The verse begins with the words, “He that hath an ear, let him hear.” This expression appears repeatedly in the messages to the seven churches in Revelation.

Having ears is not simply a reference to physical hearing. The statement calls people to listen spiritually and attentively. A person may hear words with physical ears without allowing those words to change the heart. Christ therefore calls His people to listen with faith, understanding, and obedience.

The message is addressed not only to the ancient church at Smyrna but also to “the churches.” This makes the teaching relevant to Christians who seek to understand God’s message and remain faithful during difficult circumstances.

The phrase encourages self-examination. Every believer can ask: Am I listening to God’s Word? Am I taking His promises seriously? Am I remaining faithful when life becomes difficult?

“What the Spirit saith unto the churches”

The verse says that believers should hear “what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” This emphasizes that the message is spiritual and authoritative.

The Holy Spirit speaks through the message of Scripture, calling God’s people toward faithfulness, endurance, repentance, and hope. The church is not encouraged to measure truth only by circumstances. Instead, believers are directed toward God’s eternal perspective.

The message to Smyrna is especially significant because the church was suffering. Revelation 2:10 tells them not to fear the things they would suffer and encourages them to remain faithful. Revelation 2:11 continues that message by showing that earthly suffering does not have the final word.

“He that overcometh”

The word “overcometh” is central to this verse.

In Revelation, overcoming does not mean that a Christian never experiences trouble, persecution, disappointment, or weakness. The message to Smyrna actually demonstrates the opposite. The believers were facing tribulation.

To overcome means to remain faithful to Christ despite opposition and suffering. It points to perseverance rather than an easy life.

An overcoming believer continues trusting God when circumstances are difficult. Faithfulness may require patience, courage, obedience, prayer, and endurance.

The promise therefore gives believers a different way of looking at hardship. Temporary suffering does not necessarily mean that God has abandoned His people. The message of Revelation reminds believers that faithfulness has eternal significance.

“Shall not be hurt of the second death”

The final part of the verse contains the great promise: “He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.”

The expression “second death” is explained later in Revelation. Revelation 20:14 describes the lake of fire as the second death, and Revelation 21:8 also uses the expression in describing final judgment.

The first death refers to physical death. The second death refers to the final judgment described in Revelation.

Christ’s promise is therefore much greater than a promise of physical safety. The believers at Smyrna might experience suffering and even physical death, but those who remain faithful to Christ have the promise that they will not be harmed by the second death.

This distinction is extremely important. Christianity does not teach that faithful believers will necessarily escape every earthly hardship. Instead, Scripture points toward eternal life and victory beyond physical death.

The Message of Hope

Revelation 2:11 offers hope to people who are experiencing fear or suffering.

The believers at Smyrna could face imprisonment, persecution, and even death. Yet Christ assures them that physical suffering cannot destroy their eternal hope.

This teaches an important spiritual principle: temporary suffering should not be allowed to destroy eternal faith.

The verse does not minimize suffering. Instead, it places suffering within the larger picture of God’s eternal purposes.

A Christian facing difficulties can remember that earthly circumstances are temporary, while God’s promises are eternal.

What Revelation 2:11 Teaches Christians Today

There are several practical lessons in this verse.

1. Listen to God’s Word

The command to hear reminds believers not to become spiritually careless. God’s Word should be received with attention and humility.

2. Do not allow suffering to destroy faith

Difficult circumstances can test a person’s faith. Revelation encourages believers to remain faithful even when obedience becomes costly.

3. Remember eternity

The promise concerning the second death directs attention beyond this present life. Christians are encouraged to view present circumstances in light of eternal hope.

4. Overcoming requires perseverance

Being an overcomer is not presented as having a trouble-free life. It means remaining faithful through trouble.

5. Christ’s promises are greater than earthly fears

Fear can become powerful when people focus only on what they may lose in this world. Revelation redirects attention toward what cannot ultimately be taken away from those who belong to Christ.
