Detailed Explanation in English

1. “The LORD is good”

The verse begins with a simple but profound declaration: “The LORD is good.”

God’s goodness is one of the central truths of Scripture. His goodness means that His character is righteous, faithful, compassionate, and trustworthy. Human circumstances may change, but God’s character does not change.

Sometimes people judge God’s goodness only by what happens in their lives. When everything goes well, it may be easy to say that God is good. But when sickness, financial difficulty, disappointment, injustice, or loss comes, a person may wonder whether God is still good.

Nahum 1:7 teaches us to understand God’s goodness independently of our circumstances.

The setting of Nahum is important. The prophet was announcing judgment against Nineveh, a powerful city associated with oppression and violence. Yet while describing God’s judgment, Nahum reminds God’s people that the same God who judges evil is also a refuge for those who trust Him.

This gives the verse a balanced picture of God’s character. God is not indifferent toward evil, but neither is He indifferent toward those who depend upon Him.

His goodness gives believers a foundation for hope even when circumstances are difficult.

2. “A strong hold in the day of trouble”

The second part of the verse says that God is “a strong hold in the day of trouble.”

A stronghold was a fortified place where people could find protection from an enemy. In ancient times, strong walls, towers, and fortified cities could provide security during warfare.

Nahum uses this imagery to describe God Himself.

The message is not that trouble will never come. Notice the wording: “in the day of trouble.” The verse recognizes that difficult days exist. God’s people may encounter seasons of fear, uncertainty, opposition, grief, or suffering.

But trouble does not mean that God has abandoned His people.

God is described as a stronghold during trouble.

This is an important distinction. Faith does not mean pretending that problems do not exist. Biblical faith recognizes the reality of hardship while placing confidence in God’s presence and character.

When a person has nowhere else to turn, God can become the place of spiritual refuge. Prayer can become a place of peace. God’s promises can become a source of stability. Trust in Him can provide strength when circumstances feel unstable.

The image of a stronghold also suggests security. A fortified place provides protection against external danger. In the same way, the believer can turn toward God rather than allowing fear to control the heart.

3. “And he knoweth them that trust in him”

The final part of the verse is deeply personal:

“And he knoweth them that trust in him.”

The word “knoweth” communicates more than simple awareness. The statement emphasizes God’s recognition and personal knowledge of those who place their confidence in Him.

To trust God means to rely upon Him, depend upon His character, and place confidence in Him even when circumstances are not fully understood.

There are times when people may feel forgotten. A person may pray for a long time without seeing an immediate answer. Someone may experience loneliness, rejection, financial pressure, family difficulties, or uncertainty about the future.

Nahum 1:7 gives reassurance: God knows those who trust Him.

Human beings may overlook you, misunderstand you, or forget you, but God is not unaware of those who depend upon Him.

This does not necessarily mean that every difficulty will immediately disappear. Rather, it assures believers that their relationship with God is known to Him and that their trust is not meaningless.

4. A message of hope during difficult times

Nahum 1:7 is especially meaningful during seasons of trouble.

Everyone experiences difficult moments. Sometimes trouble comes through circumstances outside our control. At other times, difficulties result from decisions, relationships, injustice, or unexpected changes.

The verse directs attention away from fear and toward God’s character.

Instead of saying, “There will never be trouble,” the verse says that God is a stronghold in trouble.

This creates a realistic but hopeful understanding of faith.

A Christian can acknowledge pain without surrendering hope. A person can admit fear while continuing to trust God. A believer can recognize uncertainty while believing that God remains faithful.

5. God’s goodness and God’s judgment

The surrounding chapter also helps us understand Nahum 1:7.

Nahum 1 contains strong language concerning God’s power and judgment. Yet verse 7 stands as a comforting statement about God’s goodness and protection.

This teaches an important biblical principle: God’s justice and God’s goodness are not opposites.

God’s opposition to evil is connected with His righteousness. At the same time, those who trust Him are invited to find refuge in Him.

The verse therefore speaks both to God’s holiness and His compassion.

It reminds readers that the God who sees injustice also sees those who depend upon Him.

6. What does this verse teach believers today?

Nahum 1:7 can encourage believers in several practical ways.

Trust God when circumstances are uncertain

You may not understand everything happening around you. Trust does not require knowing every detail of the future.

Turn toward God in trouble

When difficulties arise, prayer and dependence upon God can become sources of spiritual strength.

Remember God’s character

Circumstances change, but God’s character remains the foundation of faith.

Do not assume that hardship means abandonment

A difficult season does not automatically mean that God has forgotten you.

Find strength in God’s presence

The verse portrays God as a stronghold. This encourages believers to seek Him rather than allowing fear and despair to become their foundation.
