1 Timothy Chapter 1

Verse 5

Verse: Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart and of a good conscience and of faith unfeigned

Verse 6

Verse: From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling

  • English Explanation: Some teachers in the early church lost focus on love, faith, and purity. By straying from these core essentials, they drifted into meaningless, empty discussions and foolish arguments (vain jangling) that offered no spiritual value or growth.

Verse 7

Verse: Desiring to be teachers of the law understanding neither what they say nor whereof they affirm

  • English Explanation: These individuals were eager to be recognized as authoritative teachers of the Mosaic Law. However, Paul points out their ignorance: they completely misunderstood the deeper meaning of the words they spoke and the very doctrines they confidently insisted upon.

Verse 8

Verse: But we know that the law is good if a man use it lawfully

  • English Explanation: Paul defends the inherent value of God’s law. The law itself is holy, just, and good, but it must be applied correctly according to its divine purpose—not as a tool for legalism or self-righteousness, but as a mirror to show humanity its need for a Savior.

Verse 9

Verse: Knowing this that the law is not made for a righteous man but for the lawless and disobedient for the ungodly and for sinners for unholy and profane for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers for manslayers

  • English Explanation: The moral law was not designed to restrict or condemn those who are already living righteously under God’s grace. Instead, it acts as a restraint and a warning for rebels, criminals, the ungodly, murderers, and those who despise sacred things, exposing their explicit sins.

Verse 10

Verse: For whoremongers for them that defile themselves with mankind for menstealers for liars for perjured persons and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine

Verse 11

Verse: According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust

  • English Explanation: This vital evaluation of sin and truth aligns perfectly with the glorious Gospel of the blessed God. Paul expresses deep humility and responsibility, highlighting that this foundational truth was personally entrusted to him by God to preach.

Verse 12

Verse: And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who hath enabled me for that he counted me faithful putting me into the ministry

  • English Explanation: Paul expresses immense gratitude to Jesus Christ for empowering him. Christ didn’t choose Paul because he was perfect, but qualified him by looking at his potential for loyalty, sovereignly appointing him to serve the ministry.

Verse 13

Verse: Who was before a blasphemer and a persecutor and injurious but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief

  • English Explanation: Paul reflects honestly on his dark past as Saul of Tarsus—when he spoke evilly against Christ, violently hunted believers, and caused severe harm. Yet, God extended His infinite mercy because Paul acted out of ignorance and a lack of belief.

Verse 14

Verse: And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus

  • English Explanation: God’s grace didn’t just meet Paul’s need; it overflowed beyond measure. Along with that amazing grace, Paul was blessed with the rich faith and selfless love that can only be found in a relationship with Christ Jesus.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): اور ہمارے خداوند کا فضل اس ایمان اور محبت کے ساتھ جو مسیح یسوع میں ہے، حد سے زیادہ کثرت سے ہوا، جس نے پولس کی زندگی کو بالکل بدل کر رکھ دیا۔

Verse 15

Verse: This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am chief

  • English Explanation: This is one of the most powerful summaries of the Gospel: Jesus Christ entered humanity with the explicit mission to save sinners. Paul humbly considers himself the “chief” or worst of sinners, showing that no one is beyond the reach of salvation.

Verse 16

Verse: Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting

Verse 17

Verse: Now unto the King eternal immortal invisible the only wise God be honour and glory for ever and ever Amen

  • English Explanation: Overwhelmed by the contemplation of God’s amazing grace and mercy, Paul erupts into a beautiful doxology of praise to the eternal, undying, unseen, and uniquely wise Ruler of the universe.

Verse 18

Verse: This charge I commit unto thee son Timothy according to the prophecies which went before on thee that thou by them mightest war a good warfare

  • English Explanation: Paul hands over this foundational spiritual instruction to his spiritual son, Timothy. He reminds Timothy of past prophetic words spoken over his life, urging him to use those inspired words as a source of strength to fight the good fight of faith.

Verse 19

Verse: Holding faith and a good conscience which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck

  • English Explanation: To fight successfully, Timothy must actively maintain both clear doctrinal faith and a clean conscience. Paul warns that neglecting or deliberately suppressing one’s moral conscience naturally leads to a total destruction—a shipwreck—of one’s active faith.

Verse 20

Verse: Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander whom I have delivered unto Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme

  • English Explanation: Paul names two specific men, Hymenaeus and Alexander, who suffered this tragic spiritual shipwreck. Delivering them to Satan refers to church discipline—removing them from the protection of the church community into the world—so they might experience corrective discipline and stop slandering the truth.

Verse 1

Verse: I exhort therefore that first of all supplications prayers intercessions and giving of thanks be made for all men

He details various types of prayers—requests for needs, devotion, pleading on behalf of others, and expressions of gratitude—which must be offered up for all of humanity without exception.

Verse 2

Verse: For kings and for all that are in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty

  • English Explanation: Believers are explicitly commanded to pray for political leaders and governmental authorities. The purpose of these prayers is structural: so that society remains peaceful and stable, allowing Christians to live out their devotion to God openly, safely, and with moral integrity.

Verse 3

Verse: For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour

  • English Explanation: Praying for all people, including secular or even hostile ruling authorities, is intrinsically beautiful, morally right, and fully pleasing in the eyes of God, who is characterized here as our Savior.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): کیونکہ یہ بات ہمارے نجات دہندہ خدا کے نزدیک اچھی اور پسندیدہ ہے۔ خدا چاہتا ہے کہ اس کے لوگ سب کی بھلائی کے لیے دعا کریں۔

Verse 4

Verse: Who will have all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth

  • English Explanation: This highlights the vast extent of God’s redemptive heart: He genuinely desires every person, regardless of their background or position, to experience salvation and come to a deep, transformative understanding of spiritual truth.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): وہ چاہتا ہے کہ سب انسان نجات پائیں اور سچائی کی پہچان تک پہنچیں۔ خدا کا ارادہ کسی ایک قوم یا طبقے تک محدود نہیں بلکہ سب کے لیے ہے۔

Verse 5

Verse: For there is one God and one mediator between God and men the man Christ Jesus

  • English Explanation: This is a vital theological declaration. There is only one true God, and there is exclusively one mediator who can bridge the deep sin-chasm between God and humanity: Jesus Christ, who uniquely became a man to reconcile us to God.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): کیونکہ خدا ایک ہی ہے، اور خدا اور انسان کے درمیان ایک ہی درمیانی (شفاعتی) ہے، یعنی مسیح یسوع جو خود انسان ہے۔ اس کے علاوہ خدا تک پہنچنے کا کوئی دوسرا راستہ نہیں ہے۔

Verse 6

Verse: Who gave himself a ransom for all to be testified in due time

  • English Explanation: Jesus demonstrated His role as mediator by willingly offering His own life as a payment (ransom) to buy back all of humanity from sin. This supreme sacrifice was perfectly revealed and validated at the exact moment in human history determined by God.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): جس نے اپنے آپ کو سب کے چھٹکارے کا فدیہ دیا، تاکہ مقررہ وقتوں پر اس کی گواہی دی جائے۔ مسیح کی موت انسانیت کو گناہ کی غلامی سے آزاد کرانے کی قیمت تھی۔

Verse 7

Verse: Whereunto I am ordained a preacher and an apostle (I speak the truth in Christ and lie not) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity

  • English Explanation: Paul confirms that he was divinely appointed to be a herald, an authorized messenger (apostle), and an instructor to the non-Jewish nations (Gentiles), teaching them the true path of faith with absolute truthfulness.

Verse 8

Verse: I will therefore that men pray every where lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting

  • English Explanation: Paul directs the men in the congregations to lead in prayer wherever they gather. When they lift their hands in prayer, those hands must represent a holy lifestyle, free from lingering anger (wrath) or division and internal skepticism (doubting).

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): پس میں چاہتا ہوں کہ مرد ہر جگہ غصے اور تکرار کے بغیر، پاک ہاتھوں کو اٹھا کر دعا کیا کریں۔ یہاں ظاہری عمل کے ساتھ ساتھ دل کی پاکیزگی پر زور دیا گیا ہے۔

Verse 9

Verse: In like manner also that women adorn themselves in modest apparel with shamefacedness and sobriety not with broided hair or gold or pearls or costly array

  • English Explanation: Turning to the Christian women, Paul instructs them to focus on modesty and self-control. Their outer clothing should be respectable and appropriate, avoiding flashy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or extravagant clothing designed to draw superficial attention to oneself.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): اسی طرح عورتیں بھی حیا اور پرہیزگاری کے ساتھ مناسب لباس سے اپنے آپ کو آراستہ کریں، نہ کہ بال گوندھنے، سونے، موتیوں اور قیمتی پوشاک سے۔ مقصد یہ ہے کہ توجہ ظاہری نمود و نمائش پر نہ ہو۔

Verse 10

Verse: But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works

  • English Explanation: True beauty for a Christian woman who claims to love and serve God does not come from fashion. Instead, her ultimate decoration and adornment should be her beautiful character and selfless good works.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): بلکہ ان اچھے کاموں سے جو خدا پرستی کا اقرار کرنے والی عورتوں کے شایانِ شان ہیں۔ سچی مسیحی عورت کا زیور اس کے اچھے اعمال ہیں۔

Verse 11

Verse: Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection

  • English Explanation: Within the context of the corporate worship assembly, Paul instructs that women should learn with a quiet, teachable, and peaceful spirit, exhibiting cooperation and respect for the ordered leadership structure of the church.

  • Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): عورت کو پوری تابعداری کے ساتھ خاموشی سے سیکھنا چاہیے۔ یہ آیت کلیسیا کے اندر نظم و ضبط اور سیکھنے کے عمل میں ایک پرامن اور احترام والے رویے کی نشاندہی کرتی ہے۔

Verse 12

Verse: But I suffer not a woman to teach nor to usurp authority over the man but to be in silence

  • English Explanation: In the public governance of the church, Paul explains that he does not permit a woman to take on the primary teaching role over men or to exercise governing authority over them. Instead, she is encouraged to maintain a peaceful, supportive presence within the congregation.
