Titus Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary

Titus Chapter 1

Verse 6

Verse: If any be blameless the husband of one wife having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly

  • English Explanation: Paul outlines the foundational character traits for church leaders (elders). “Blameless” does not mean sinless, but rather a person of irreproachable integrity whose reputation cannot be easily attacked. Marital fidelity (“husband of one wife”) and a well-managed household with respectful, faithful children demonstrate that the leader can manage God’s church effectively.

Verse 7

Verse: For a bishop must be blameless as the steward of God not selfwilled not soon angry not given to wine no striker not given to filthy lucre

  • English Explanation: A “bishop” (overseer) acts as God’s trustee. Therefore, they must reject arrogance, uncontrolled anger, substance abuse, physical violence, and greed (“filthy lucre”). Financial and emotional integrity are vital to securing public trust.

Verse 8

Verse: But a lover of hospitality a lover of good men sober just holy temperate

  • English Explanation: In contrast to the negative traits in verse 7, leaders must welcome others into their homes, seek out good company, remain clear-headed (“sober”), and exhibit justice, holiness, and self-restraint.

Verse 9

Verse: Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers

  • English Explanation: Leaders must be firmly rooted in biblical truth. This dual responsibility requires using “sound doctrine” to encourage believers and to logically correct or refute those who oppose the truth (“gainsayers”).

Verse 10

Verse: For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers specially they of the circumcision

  • English Explanation: Paul warns of rebellious, empty talkers within the early church context—specifically legalistic teachers (“the circumcision”) who mixed the Gospel with unnecessary cultural or ceremonial traditions.

Verse 11

Verse: Whose mouths must be stopped who subvert whole houses teaching things which they ought not for filthy lucre’s sake

  • English Explanation: False teachers motivated by financial gain (“filthy lucre”) were destroying entire families with dangerous ideas. Paul commands that their destructive influence be stopped through firm biblical correction.

Verse 12

Verse: One of themselves even a prophet of their own said The Cretians are alway liars evil beasts slow bellies

  • English Explanation: Paul quotes the Cretan philosopher Epimenides to illustrate the cultural challenges Titus faced in Crete. The culture was notoriously dishonest, aggressive, and lazy (“slow bellies”).

Verse 13

Verse: This witness is true Wherefore rebuke them sharply that they may be sound in the faith

  • English Explanation: Acknowledging the secular assessment of Cretan culture, Paul orders Titus to issue direct, sharp corrections so that the believers can break free from cultural vices and remain pure in their faith.

Verse 14

Verse: Not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men that turn from the truth

  • English Explanation: Believers are instructed to ignore unbiblical myths, human traditions, and legalistic rules that distract from the pure message of Christ and turn people away from the truth.

Verse 15

Verse: Unto the pure all things are pure but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure but even their mind and conscience is defiled

  • English Explanation: For a heart cleansed by grace, external and ceremonial objects are not inherently defiled. However, for those with corrupt, unbelieving minds, even good things become distorted because their internal moral compass is corrupted.

Verse 16

Verse: They profess that they know God but in works they deny him being abominable and disobedient and unto every good work reprobate

  • English Explanation: True faith is demonstrated through actions. Hypocrites claim allegiance to God with words, but their lifestyles, disobedience, and lack of good works contradict their claim.

Titus Chapter 2

Verse 1

Verse: But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine

  • English Explanation: Titus is urged to preach and teach principles that align with “sound doctrine”—teachings that lead to healthy, wholesome, and holy living, contrasting with the false teachers.

Verse 2

Verse: That the aged men be sober grave temperate sound in faith in charity in patience

  • English Explanation: Older men in the church are called to lead by example, exhibiting self-control, respectability, moderation, and mature love, faith, and patience.

Verse 3

Verse: The aged women likewise that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness not false accusers not given to much wine teachers of good things

  • English Explanation: Older women are encouraged to live lives that reflect holiness. They must avoid malicious gossip (“false accusers”), avoid substance abuse, and use their maturity to mentor others.

Verse 4

Verse: That they may teach the young women to be sober to love their husbands to love their children

  • English Explanation: A major role for older women is mentoring younger women, focusing on family stability, cultivating love for their husbands, and nurturing their children.

Verse 5

Verse: To be discreet chaste keepers at home good obedient to their own husbands that the word of God be not blasphemed

  • English Explanation: Young women are called to exhibit wisdom, moral purity, domestic responsibility, and respect for their husbands. This godly conduct ensures that outsiders cannot disrespect God’s word due to their poor behavior.

Verse 6

Verse: Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded

  • English Explanation: Paul provides a concise but powerful directive for young men: discipline your minds. Self-control is critical for navigating the temptations of youth.

Verse 7

Verse: In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works in doctrine shewing uncorruptness gravity sincerity

  • English Explanation: Titus must model the behavior he preaches. His teaching must be marked by integrity, seriousness, and pure motives.

Verse 8

Verse: Sound speech that cannot be condemned that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed having no evil thing to say of you

  • English Explanation: A believer’s speech should be constructive and above reproach, leaving critics with no legitimate grounds for accusation or slander.

Verse 9

Verse: Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters and to please them well in all things not answering again

  • English Explanation: In the first-century Roman context, Christian servants were urged to show respect, fulfill duties efficiently, and avoid argumentative behavior toward their masters.

Verse 10

Verse: Not purloining but shewing all good fidelity that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things

  • English Explanation: Servants are told not to steal (“purloining”) but to be entirely trustworthy. By doing so, their daily actions make the Gospel beautiful and attractive to others.

Verse 11

Verse: For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men

  • English Explanation: This serves as the theological foundation for holy living: God’s saving grace has been revealed universally through Jesus Christ to all humanity, regardless of status.

Verse 12

Verse: Teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts we should live soberly righteously and godly in this present world

  • English Explanation: Grace acts as a teacher, training believers to reject ungodly lifestyles and worldly desires, and instead choose self-controlled, ethical, and reverent lives today.

Verse 13

Verse: Looking for that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ

  • English Explanation: Christians live in anticipation of the “blessed hope”—the ultimate, glorious return of Jesus Christ, who is explicitly identified here as our great God and Savior.

Verse 14

  • English Explanation: Christ’s sacrifice aims to free us from sin and cleanse a community uniquely dedicated to Him, marked by an eagerness to perform good works.

Verse 15

Verse: These things speak and exhort and rebuke with all authority Let no man despise thee

  • English Explanation: Titus is commanded to teach, encourage, and correct his congregation with full spiritual authority, living in a way that commands respect.

Titus Chapter 3

Verse 1

Verse: Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers to obey magistrates to be ready to every good work

  • English Explanation: Believers are reminded to be law-abiding citizens, respecting government officials and authorities while maintaining a readiness to contribute positively to society.

  • English Explanation: Christians must avoid slander and arguments, pursuing a lifestyle of peace, gentleness, and humility toward everyone they encounter.

Verse 3

Verse: For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish disobedient deceived serving divers lusts and pleasures living in malice and envy hateful and hating one another

  • English Explanation: Paul reminds believers to remain humble by recalling their own past states before salvation, when they were controlled by ignorance, destructive passions, malice, jealousy, and hatred. This perspective fuels compassion for unbelievers.
