Detailed English Explanation of Jonah 3:3
“So Jonah arose”
The first important phrase is “So Jonah arose.” This simple statement represents a great change in Jonah’s attitude.
Earlier in the story, Jonah had refused to follow God’s command. Instead of going to Nineveh, he boarded a ship heading in the opposite direction. His disobedience brought him into a difficult situation, but God did not abandon him.
After God rescued Jonah from the great fish, Jonah was given another opportunity to obey. Now he arose and acted.
The phrase reminds readers that repentance is not merely feeling sorry for wrongdoing. Genuine repentance should produce a change in behavior. Jonah did not simply acknowledge God’s authority with words; he demonstrated obedience by getting up and going where God had commanded.
This is an important spiritual lesson. A person may fail, make poor decisions, or turn away from the right path, but failure does not have to be the final chapter. God can call a person back to obedience and give an opportunity to fulfill the responsibility that was previously neglected.
“And went unto Nineveh”
Jonah’s destination was Nineveh.
Nineveh was a major ancient city associated with Assyria. For Jonah, traveling there was not an insignificant assignment. The city represented a people toward whom Jonah had strong feelings, and later chapters reveal that Jonah struggled with God’s mercy toward Nineveh.
Nevertheless, Jonah went.
The words “went unto Nineveh” demonstrate practical obedience. God had not merely told Jonah to think about Nineveh or pray about Nineveh. He had commanded him to go there and deliver a message.
This also shows that God’s work often requires action. Faithfulness involves responding to God’s direction rather than remaining passive.
“According to the word of the LORD”
This phrase explains the standard Jonah followed.
He went to Nineveh “according to the word of the LORD.” His journey was not based on personal preference, convenience, or human ambition. He was acting according to God’s command.
The expression also connects Jonah 3:3 with the earlier command given to him. God had already made His will known, and Jonah now followed it.
For believers, this phrase emphasizes the importance of listening to God’s word and responding to it faithfully. Obedience is not simply doing something religious; it is aligning one’s actions with what God has commanded.
“Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city”
The verse next gives information about Nineveh.
Nineveh was called “an exceeding great city.” This description communicates the greatness and importance of the place Jonah had entered.
The city was not a small village where Jonah could quickly complete his assignment. It was a major urban center. The size of Nineveh helps explain why Jonah’s mission was significant.
God’s message was being sent into a powerful and influential environment. The greatness of the city did not make it beyond God’s concern.
This is one of the important themes of the Book of Jonah: God’s concern extends beyond one nation or one group of people. The people of Nineveh were also accountable to God, and God was willing to send a messenger to warn them.
“Of three days’ journey”
The final phrase says that Nineveh was “of three days’ journey.”
This expression has been understood in different ways by Bible commentators. It may refer to the time required to travel through the city or its broader area, or it may describe the considerable extent of the city and surrounding region. The wording emphasizes that Nineveh was large and required substantial time to traverse.
The important point in the context is that Jonah had a significant mission in a large and influential city.
The verse therefore moves the story forward from Jonah’s personal struggle to God’s larger purpose. Jonah has arrived, and the next verse will show him beginning to proclaim God’s message.
Spiritual Lessons from Jonah 3:3
1. Obedience requires action
Jonah did not merely agree with God intellectually. He arose and went.
True obedience becomes visible through actions. When people understand what God requires, they should seek to respond faithfully rather than merely acknowledging the command.
2. Failure does not have to be the end
Jonah’s earlier disobedience did not prevent God from continuing His purpose.
This does not mean that disobedience has no consequences. Jonah experienced serious consequences because of his rebellion. Yet God’s mercy gave him another opportunity to obey.
This offers encouragement to people who have failed. A past mistake does not necessarily mean that God cannot use a person again.
3. God’s word deserves obedience
Jonah went “according to the word of the LORD.”
The phrase places God’s word at the center of Jonah’s mission. The prophet’s responsibility was not to create his own message but to carry the message he had received.
4. God cares about great cities and large communities
Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, yet God was concerned about its people.
The story demonstrates that God’s purposes can reach entire communities. A city may be powerful, wealthy, influential, or culturally different, but none of these things place it outside God’s concern.
5. God’s mercy can follow judgment
The message Jonah was about to deliver concerned Nineveh’s wickedness and impending judgment. Yet God’s warning itself contained an opportunity for repentance.
A warning from God can therefore be understood as an expression of mercy. It gives people an opportunity to turn from wrongdoing.
