English Explanation of Philippians 4:3

1. “And I intreat thee also”

Paul begins with the words, “I intreat thee also.” The word “intreat” means to appeal, request, or earnestly ask.

Paul is not giving a harsh command. He is making a loving appeal. This shows something important about Christian leadership. Spiritual leaders should encourage believers to participate in God’s work through love, wisdom, and cooperation.

Paul understood that disagreements and difficulties can sometimes arise among sincere believers. In the surrounding verses, Paul has appealed to Euodias and Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Now he asks another trusted believer to help them.

This teaches us that reconciliation within the church is important. When believers experience disagreement, mature Christians should seek to help restore peace rather than increase conflict.

2. “True yokefellow”

Paul calls this person his “true yokefellow.”

A yokefellow was someone joined together with another person for a common purpose, much like animals working together under a yoke. Paul uses this picture to describe someone who was faithfully connected with him in Christian service.

The expression suggests partnership, trust, and shared responsibility.

Christian ministry is not meant to be a competition. Believers are called to work together for the gospel. One person may preach, another may teach, another may encourage, another may give, and another may serve quietly behind the scenes.

All these forms of service can contribute to God’s work.

The phrase “true yokefellow” therefore reminds Christians that spiritual work requires faithful partnership. We need people who will stand with us, encourage us, correct us when necessary, and help us accomplish the work God has given us.

3. “Help those women”

Paul specifically asks his fellow worker to “help those women.”

The women mentioned here were Euodias and Syntyche, whom Paul had mentioned immediately before this verse. These women had apparently been active participants in Christian ministry.

Paul does not dismiss their disagreement as unimportant. Instead, he asks another believer to help them.

This teaches that Christian maturity includes helping people restore relationships.

Sometimes believers can sincerely love Christ while having disagreements with one another. The existence of a disagreement does not necessarily mean that someone’s faith is false. However, believers are called to seek unity and peace.

Helping others can mean listening, encouraging, praying, speaking truth lovingly, and helping people find reconciliation.

4. “Which laboured with me in the gospel”

Paul gives these women an important recognition: they “laboured with me in the gospel.”

The word “laboured” communicates serious effort and dedication. These women were not merely spectators. They had participated in the work of spreading the gospel.

This is significant because Paul openly acknowledges their contribution.

Christian ministry involves many kinds of work. Some people preach publicly, while others teach children, encourage believers, care for people in need, provide hospitality, pray faithfully, support missionaries, or share the gospel personally.

Not every ministry is visible from a platform.

God sees faithful service even when other people do not.

Philippians 4:3 therefore encourages believers to value every sincere contribution to the work of the gospel.

5. “With Clement also”

Paul then mentions Clement.

We are given very little information about Clement in this passage. The important point is that Paul identifies him as one of his fellow labourers.

This reminds us that the early Christian mission involved a community of workers. Paul was not working alone. Many believers participated in the spread of the gospel.

The mention of Clement also shows how Paul valued faithful coworkers. He remembered people who had served alongside him.

Christian service is therefore a shared responsibility. Churches become stronger when believers recognize and appreciate those who faithfully serve.

6. “And with other my fellowlabourers”

Paul continues by referring to “other my fellowlabourers.”

Some of these people are not named individually. Yet Paul still recognizes them.

This is an encouraging truth. A person’s name may not appear prominently in history, but God knows their work.

There are countless faithful Christians whose names are not widely known. They may never become famous preachers, authors, missionaries, or church leaders. Nevertheless, their prayers, generosity, kindness, teaching, hospitality, sacrifice, and faithfulness can have eternal significance.

Paul’s words remind us that Christian service should not be motivated by human recognition.

We serve because we love Christ and desire to be faithful to Him.

7. “Whose names are in the book of life”

The final phrase is especially powerful:

“Whose names are in the book of life.”

The book of life is a biblical image associated with belonging to God and having eternal life. Paul points these believers beyond their earthly work toward their eternal identity.

Their greatest honor was not simply that Paul knew their names.

Their greatest hope was that their names were associated with the book of life.

This gives Christian service an eternal perspective.

Human recognition is temporary. Titles, popularity, wealth, and reputation can disappear. But eternal life with God is of far greater significance.

The phrase also provides encouragement to Christians who feel forgotten.

You may not receive recognition from people. You may serve quietly. You may pray without anyone knowing. You may help others without receiving thanks. Yet God sees faithful service.

The Christian’s hope ultimately rests not in human applause but in God’s eternal promise.

Major Lessons from Philippians 4:3

1. Christian ministry requires cooperation

Paul describes believers as fellow labourers. The gospel is advanced through people working together.

Christians should therefore avoid unnecessary competition and jealousy. Different believers can have different gifts while serving the same Lord.

2. Christians should help restore peace

Paul asks his trusted coworker to help the women who were experiencing disagreement.

This teaches us that mature believers should encourage reconciliation rather than take sides unnecessarily or spread conflict.

3. Women played an important role in gospel ministry

Paul explicitly acknowledges women who had laboured with him in the gospel.

Their contribution was important enough for Paul to mention them in his letter.

This demonstrates that Christian service involves believers faithfully using their gifts in the work of the gospel.

4. Faithful workers deserve appreciation

Paul remembers Clement and other fellow labourers.

Christians should appreciate those who faithfully serve, even when their work happens quietly.

A simple word of encouragement can strengthen someone who is serving faithfully.

5. God remembers what people may overlook

Some fellow labourers were not even named individually. Yet Paul knew that their names were connected with the book of life.

This teaches that God’s knowledge of His people is greater than human recognition.

6. Eternal life is greater than earthly recognition

Paul ends the verse by pointing to the book of life.

This shifts attention from temporary achievements to eternal hope.

The most important question is not whether people remember our names, but whether we belong to Christ and live faithfully before God.

Practical Application

Philippians 4:3 can be applied to Christian life in several practical ways.

Help others rather than increasing conflict

When believers experience disagreement, Christians should seek peaceful solutions. We should not enjoy conflict or spread someone’s disagreement to others.

Appreciate fellow workers

Churches contain many people who serve in different ways. We should thank and encourage those who faithfully serve.

Serve without seeking applause

God sees service that people may never notice. A person can faithfully serve through prayer, generosity, teaching, helping, visiting, encouraging, and caring for others.

Remember eternal priorities

Human recognition does not last forever. Philippians 4:3 directs our attention toward the book of life and our eternal relationship with God.

Work together for the gospel

Christian ministry becomes stronger when believers cooperate rather than compete. Different gifts can work together toward the same purpose.

Urdu Explanation —
