Detailed Explanation of Revelation 3:16 in English
“So then because thou art lukewarm”
The word “lukewarm” describes something that is neither properly hot nor properly cold. In the context of the Laodicean church, Jesus uses this condition as a picture of spiritual indifference.
A lukewarm believer may not completely reject Christianity, but neither does that person live with wholehearted devotion to Christ. There may be religious language, traditions, and outward participation, but the inner passion for God has become weak.
Spiritual lukewarmness can develop gradually. A person may begin with enthusiasm but become distracted by worldly interests. Prayer may become occasional. Bible reading may become merely a routine. Worship can become an external activity without sincere affection for Christ.
Jesus’ warning therefore invites believers to examine what is happening inside their hearts.
“And neither cold nor hot”
Jesus identifies two opposite conditions: cold and hot.
The imagery emphasizes the absence of a clear spiritual response. A person who is spiritually “hot” can represent wholehearted devotion, zeal, love, obedience, and a sincere desire to follow Christ. By contrast, someone who is “cold” is openly distant or unresponsive.
The particular emphasis of the passage is the dangerous middle condition: lukewarmness.
A lukewarm spiritual life can be difficult to recognize because it may still look religious from the outside. A person may continue attending services, using Christian vocabulary, and participating in religious activities while the heart has become spiritually passive.
The verse therefore encourages self-examination rather than comparison with other people.
The important question is not simply, “Do I appear religious?” but, “Is my heart genuinely devoted to Jesus Christ?”
“I will spue thee out of my mouth”
The language here is deliberately strong. The King James Version uses the word “spue,” meaning to vomit or reject something from the mouth.
Jesus uses this vivid expression to communicate His serious displeasure with spiritual lukewarmness.
This does not mean that Christ is casually rejecting people who struggle, experience weakness, or go through periods of spiritual dryness. Scripture repeatedly shows God’s patience, mercy, forgiveness, and willingness to restore those who turn back to Him.
The warning concerns persistent spiritual indifference—a condition in which a person becomes comfortable with a divided or superficial relationship with God.
Jesus wants genuine repentance and wholehearted faith.
The Historical Background of Laodicea
To understand the imagery of Revelation 3:16, it is helpful to consider the setting of the Laodicean church.
Laodicea was a prosperous city in Asia Minor. The church there had become associated with a sense of self-sufficiency. Immediately after Revelation 3:16, Jesus explains their spiritual condition by saying:
“Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing…”
The problem was not simply that they possessed material wealth. The deeper problem was that their material prosperity had contributed to spiritual complacency.
They believed they were in a satisfactory condition, while Jesus described them very differently.
This provides an important spiritual lesson: material success does not necessarily indicate spiritual health.
A person can have financial security, education, social respect, possessions, and comfort while still being spiritually empty.
Likewise, a church can have buildings, programs, resources, and influence while needing deeper repentance and renewed devotion to Christ.
What Does “Lukewarm” Mean Spiritually?
Spiritual lukewarmness can appear in many forms.
1. Going through religious routines without heartfelt devotion
A person may pray because it is expected but not because they genuinely desire fellowship with God.
2. Knowing Scripture without practicing it
Biblical knowledge is valuable, but Scripture calls believers not merely to hear God’s Word but to live according to it.
3. Loving worldly things more than spiritual things
When possessions, entertainment, popularity, career, or personal comfort consistently receive greater attention than God, spiritual priorities can become distorted.
4. Compromising faith for convenience
Lukewarmness can appear when someone follows biblical principles only when doing so is easy but abandons them when obedience becomes costly.
5. Becoming spiritually satisfied
Perhaps one of the greatest dangers is believing that no spiritual growth is necessary.
The Christian life is not intended to remain static. Believers are called to grow in faith, love, holiness, wisdom, and obedience.
Revelation 3:16 and the Call to Genuine Faith
Revelation 3:16 should not be separated from the surrounding verses.
Jesus does not merely expose the Laodiceans’ condition. He also offers them an opportunity to change.
In Revelation 3:19, He says:
“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.”
This is important because the warning of Revelation 3:16 is connected with an invitation to repentance.
Jesus’ correction is not meaningless condemnation. It is a call to return to genuine spiritual devotion.
The next verse presents another powerful description of the problem:
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock…”
The passage therefore moves from warning to repentance and then toward fellowship with Christ.
The message is deeply hopeful: spiritual lukewarmness does not have to be the final condition of a believer.
Lessons for Christians Today
Revelation 3:16 remains relevant because spiritual complacency can affect believers in every generation.
Examine your spiritual life
Ask yourself whether your relationship with God is growing or becoming merely routine.
Make prayer meaningful again
Prayer is more than repeating words. It is an opportunity to seek God sincerely, confess sin, express gratitude, and ask for guidance.
Return to Scripture
God’s Word provides instruction, correction, encouragement, and wisdom. Regular Bible study can help believers recognize areas where their lives need adjustment.
Do not measure spiritual health by possessions
Material blessings are not reliable measurements of spiritual maturity. The condition of the heart matters far more.
Practice what you believe
Genuine faith should influence daily choices, relationships, speech, priorities, and conduct.
Respond to correction
One of the most valuable lessons from this passage is that correction can be an expression of God’s love. Instead of resisting conviction, believers can respond through repentance and renewed obedience.
