English Explanation

Revelation 4:3 presents one of the most striking descriptions of the heavenly throne in the Bible. The Apostle John is given a vision of heaven, where he sees a throne and One sitting upon it. Rather than giving a physical description of God in ordinary human terms, John describes the appearance surrounding the One on the throne through precious stones and brilliant colors. The language is majestic, symbolic, and filled with meaning.

The verse begins, “And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone.” John does not say that God literally possesses the physical form of a gemstone. Instead, he describes what the divine glory looked like to him in the vision. The comparison communicates brilliance, beauty, majesty, holiness, and overwhelming splendor.

Jasper

Jasper is mentioned as one of the stones associated with the appearance of the One seated upon the throne. In the ancient world, precious and highly valued stones were associated with beauty and magnificence. The precise appearance of biblical jasper is debated, and it may not correspond exactly to what people call jasper today.

The important point in Revelation 4:3 is not identifying the stone according to modern mineral classification. John is communicating the extraordinary radiance of the heavenly scene. The appearance of the One on the throne was beyond ordinary human description.

The imagery of brilliant precious stones reminds the reader that God’s glory is incomparable. Earthly treasures may be beautiful, but the vision directs attention toward something far greater: the majesty of God Himself.

Sardine Stone

John also compares the appearance to “a sardine stone.” The term is traditionally understood as referring to a reddish or fiery-colored precious stone, often associated with sardius or carnelian.

The combination of jasper and sardine stone creates a powerful visual picture. One can imagine brightness, radiance, and rich color surrounding the throne. John is attempting to express something that ordinary language cannot adequately capture.

This is an important feature of Revelation. The book frequently uses symbolic and visionary language. The purpose is not merely to provide architectural details about heaven but to reveal spiritual realities. The throne represents God’s sovereign authority, and the brilliant appearance surrounding it emphasizes His glory.

“There was a rainbow round about the throne”

The next part of the verse says:

“And there was a rainbow round about the throne.”

The rainbow is especially significant because it immediately recalls the biblical account of Noah. In Genesis, the rainbow is connected with God’s covenant and His promise concerning the earth.

In Revelation, the rainbow appears around the throne. This creates a beautiful connection between God’s authority and His covenant faithfulness. The One who sits upon the throne is not presented as arbitrary or unreliable. The biblical picture of God includes both sovereign authority and faithfulness to His promises.

The rainbow therefore provides a striking contrast to the overwhelming majesty of the throne. John sees incredible power and glory, yet around the throne is a sign associated with covenant and mercy.

“In sight like unto an emerald”

John says that the rainbow was “in sight like unto an emerald.”

An emerald is traditionally associated with a brilliant green appearance. John therefore sees a rainbow with an emerald-like appearance surrounding the throne. The image is unusual and beautiful.

The vision demonstrates that heavenly reality is beyond ordinary earthly experience. John uses familiar things—precious stones, colors, a rainbow—to communicate something unfamiliar and supernatural.

The emerald imagery may also remind readers of life, beauty, and God’s creative glory. However, we should be careful not to assign a definite symbolic meaning to every individual color when the text itself does not explicitly explain it.

The Throne Is the Center of the Vision

One of the most important themes of Revelation 4 is the throne of God. The throne represents authority, kingship, and divine sovereignty.

John’s vision places the throne at the center. Everything surrounding it directs attention toward the One who sits upon it.

This is important because Revelation was written to believers living in a world where earthly rulers appeared powerful. The vision reminds God’s people that earthly power is not ultimate. Above every earthly authority stands the heavenly throne.

Revelation 4:3 therefore invites Christians to look beyond present circumstances and recognize God’s supreme authority.

Beauty and Majesty Together

The imagery of Revelation 4:3 combines beauty with majesty. Precious stones communicate brilliance and value, while the throne communicates authority.

God is not presented merely as powerful. His presence is also described in terms of incomparable splendor.

The verse teaches readers to approach God with reverence. His glory cannot be reduced to human categories. John does not attempt to create an ordinary portrait. Instead, he uses symbolic imagery because the reality he sees is greater than ordinary human language can express.

A Message of Hope

Revelation 4:3 also carries a message of hope. The world may appear unstable, but the heavenly throne remains established.

The vision does not begin with chaos. It begins with a throne.

That detail matters. Revelation later describes judgments, conflicts, suffering, and dramatic events, but before those events unfold, John is shown the throne of God. The reader is first reminded of who remains sovereign.

The rainbow surrounding the throne adds another dimension: the God who reigns is also the God who keeps His promises.

For believers, this can encourage trust and perseverance. Circumstances may change, earthly powers may rise and fall, and the future may seem uncertain, but the throne of God remains the central reality of the vision.

Revelation 4:3 Explanation in Urdu

Sardine Stone
