That cannot be condemned”
This does not mean that everyone will always approve of what a Christian says. Even Jesus Christ was falsely accused, and faithful believers may sometimes be criticized unfairly. Rather, Paul is teaching believers to speak in such a way that their words cannot rightly be condemned as dishonest, hateful, immoral, abusive, or foolish.
A Christian’s speech should therefore be truthful and gracious. Words should not contradict the faith that a person claims to follow.
“He that is of the contrary part”
The “contrary part” describes someone who opposes or disagrees with the Christian message. Paul recognizes that opposition will exist. Christians should not respond to disagreement with hatred or uncontrolled anger.
Instead, faithful conduct and wholesome speech can become a powerful testimony. When an opponent looks for a legitimate accusation but finds none, the Christian’s consistent character speaks for itself.
“May be ashamed”
The purpose is not personal revenge or humiliation. Paul is describing a situation in which an opponent discovers that there is no legitimate basis for accusation. If someone tries to find fault with a believer but cannot point to genuine wrongdoing, the accuser may ultimately be embarrassed by the absence of evidence.
This teaches an important principle: Christians should answer opposition through integrity rather than hostility.
“Having no evil thing to say of you”
Paul emphasizes the importance of maintaining a good testimony. Believers should not give unnecessary opportunities for others to accuse them because of careless speech or sinful behavior.
This does not mean that Christians must become perfect before anyone can criticize them. Every believer remains dependent upon the grace of God. Instead, the verse calls Christians to pursue a life in which their conduct and speech are consistent with the Gospel.
What Titus 2:8 Teaches About Christian Speech
1. Words should be healthy
Words can heal or hurt. A Christian should avoid speech that spreads hatred, gossip, dishonesty, vulgarity, or unnecessary conflict. Sound speech should contribute something good.
2. Truth matters
Healthy speech must be based on truth. A person cannot maintain a good Christian testimony while deliberately using lies or deception.
3. Speech should match conduct
It is not enough to speak about Christian values while behaving in the opposite way. Titus 2 emphasizes practical godliness. Faith should influence conversations, relationships, work, family life, and everyday decisions.
4. Christians should respond wisely to opposition
When people disagree with Christian beliefs, the appropriate response is not uncontrolled anger. Believers can remain respectful while standing firmly for truth.
5. A good testimony protects the Gospel’s reputation
People often judge a message by the behavior of those who represent it. Christians therefore have a responsibility to live carefully. Our words and actions can either make the Christian message attractive or give people unnecessary reasons to reject it.
Practical Application
Titus 2:8 is highly relevant to modern life. Social media, online discussions, messaging applications, workplaces, schools, and family conversations provide countless opportunities for speech. A believer’s words can reach many people quickly.
Before speaking or posting something, Christians can ask:
- Is this true?
- Is this necessary?
- Is this respectful?
- Does this reflect the character of Christ?
- Could these words unnecessarily harm another person?
- Would I be comfortable if these words were publicly associated with my faith?
These questions can help believers practice “sound speech.”
A Christian does not have to win every argument. Sometimes the strongest testimony is a calm, truthful, respectful response. A believer who refuses to participate in slander or hatred demonstrates that faith affects everyday behavior.
English Summary
Titus 2:8 calls believers to use sound speech that cannot rightly be condemned. Paul understood that Christians would face people who disagreed with their faith. Instead of responding to opposition with anger or sinful speech, believers were instructed to maintain honorable communication and conduct.
The goal was that opponents would have no legitimate evil thing to say against them. This is a powerful principle of Christian testimony. We cannot control what other people say about us, but we can control the truthfulness, kindness, wisdom, and integrity of our own words.
The verse therefore encourages Christians to make their speech a reflection of their relationship with God. Our words should demonstrate truth, self-control, grace, wisdom, and love.
“Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.”
“Sound speech” —
“That cannot be condemned” —
“He that is of the contrary part” —
“May be ashamed” —
“Having no evil thing to say of you”
