Titus 1:14 Explanation in English

Titus 1:14 gives an important warning about listening to teachings that appear religious but lead people away from the truth of God. Paul was instructing Titus, who was serving believers in Crete, about how to deal with false teachers and people who were promoting ideas that were inconsistent with the true Christian faith.

The verse says, “Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.” The central message is that believers must be careful about what they accept as spiritual truth. Not every religious tradition, story, rule, or command deserves the same authority as the Word of God.

“Not giving heed”

The expression “not giving heed” means not paying attention to, accepting, or allowing oneself to be controlled by something. Paul wanted Christians to exercise spiritual discernment.

A believer should not automatically accept a teaching simply because it sounds religious or comes from someone who claims spiritual authority. Every teaching should be examined in the light of God’s truth.

This principle remains important today. People can encounter many different teachings through books, social media, videos, religious discussions, and personal opinions. Some teachings may sound convincing while having little biblical foundation.

Paul therefore encourages believers to remain anchored in the truth.

“Jewish fables”

The phrase “Jewish fables” refers to religious stories, legends, speculative traditions, or teachings that were being promoted among some people but were not part of the true gospel message.

Paul was not condemning Jewish people or the Old Testament Scriptures. The Old Testament is part of God’s revealed Word, and the Christian faith recognizes its importance. Rather, Paul was warning against human traditions and speculative religious teachings that had been added to or distorted God’s truth.

This distinction is very important. Biblical teaching and human tradition are not automatically the same thing.

A tradition can sometimes be harmless, but when a human tradition is treated as though it has the authority of God’s Word, it can become spiritually dangerous. If a teaching causes people to focus on speculation rather than truth, it can distract them from the gospel.

“Commandments of men”

The next phrase is “commandments of men.” This describes rules created by people and presented as religious requirements.

There is a difference between God’s commands and human rules. God’s commands have divine authority, while human regulations come from people.

The problem arises when people make their own rules the measure of spiritual righteousness. Someone may begin to believe that following human traditions makes them more acceptable before God, while neglecting faith, truth, love, holiness, and obedience to God’s Word.

Jesus also warned about human traditions when religious leaders allowed traditions to take priority over God’s commands. The problem was not simply that traditions existed; the problem was that human tradition could become a substitute for God’s truth.

“That turn from the truth”

This is the most serious part of the verse.

Paul says that these teachings “turn from the truth.” The issue is not merely intellectual disagreement. False teaching can redirect a person’s heart and life away from the truth.

The truth in the context of Titus includes the genuine gospel, sound doctrine, and the teaching that produces godly living. Christian truth is not merely a collection of ideas. It is meant to transform how people think, believe, speak, and live.

A teaching that takes people away from God’s truth should therefore be rejected, even if it sounds impressive or religious.

The importance of biblical discernment

Titus 1:14 teaches believers to develop discernment. Spiritual discernment means learning to distinguish between what is genuinely biblical and what is merely human opinion.

This does not mean that Christians should reject every tradition or refuse to listen to anyone. Instead, believers should compare teachings with Scripture and carefully consider whether they agree with the truth.

A useful question is:

Does this teaching lead me closer to God and His truth, or does it replace God’s truth with human ideas?

That question can help Christians recognize unhealthy teachings.

Religious appearance is not enough

One of the lessons of Titus 1:14 is that something can look religious without being spiritually healthy.

A teaching may contain religious language, quotations, traditions, or complicated explanations and still lead people away from the truth. Therefore, believers should not judge teaching only by how impressive or traditional it sounds.

The standard must be God’s truth.

This is especially important for spiritual maturity. A mature Christian learns to value truth more than novelty, popularity, tradition, or personal preference.

Application for Christians today

Titus 1:14 has a practical message for modern believers.

Christians should study Scripture carefully, pray for wisdom, and avoid accepting every religious claim without examination. Teachers and religious leaders should also remain accountable to biblical truth rather than building their teaching around personal opinions.

The verse also encourages humility. A person should be willing to recognize when a cherished idea is not actually supported by Scripture.

Following God requires a commitment to truth even when the truth challenges our traditions or assumptions.

The goal is not to argue about every minor difference. The goal is to remain faithful to the central truth of the gospel and avoid teachings that lead people away from it.

Titus 1:14 Explanation in Urdu

“Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.”

“Not giving heed” —

“Not giving heed”

“Jewish fables” —

“Jewish fables”

“Commandments of men” — انسانوں کے احکام

“Commandments of men”

“That turn from the truth” —

“That turn from the truth.”
