Titus 3:1 Explained in English
Titus 3:1 teaches Christians how their faith should influence their relationship with civil authorities and society. Paul instructed Titus to remind believers to “be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work.” This verse connects Christian faith with responsible citizenship, respect for lawful authority, and a willingness to serve others.
The phrase “Put them in mind” is important. Paul was telling Titus to continually remind the believers of these responsibilities. Christian conduct is not something that people automatically practice simply because they have faith. Believers need regular instruction and encouragement to live according to God’s will. The Christian life involves both what a person believes and how that person behaves toward others.
Subject to Principalities and Powers
Paul begins by saying that believers should be “subject to principalities and powers.” In this context, these words refer to governing authorities. Christians were encouraged to recognize legitimate civil authority and to live peacefully within society.
The Bible does not present Christian freedom as permission to disregard every form of government or social order. Instead, believers are encouraged to respect lawful authority and contribute positively to their communities.
Being subject to authority does not mean that Christians must approve of everything a government does. Scripture also shows that God’s authority is higher than human authority. When human commands directly contradict God’s commands, believers must remain faithful to God. However, ordinary Christian conduct should not be characterized by unnecessary rebellion, disorder, or disrespect.
This principle encourages Christians to become people who promote peace rather than confusion. They should obey laws, respect legitimate officials, fulfill their civic responsibilities, and seek the welfare of the communities in which they live.
To Obey Magistrates
The next instruction is “to obey magistrates.” Magistrates were governing officials responsible for maintaining civil order. Paul wanted Christians to understand that following Christ should make them responsible members of society.
Obedience to lawful authority can include respecting laws, paying required obligations, following legitimate regulations, and treating public officials respectfully. Christians should not seek conflict simply because they disagree with someone who holds an official position.
At the same time, biblical obedience to government should not be understood as unlimited or unconditional. God remains the ultimate authority. Throughout Scripture, there are examples of faithful people who respectfully refused commands that required them to disobey God. Therefore, Titus 3:1 encourages lawful and peaceful citizenship while maintaining the priority of faithfulness to God.
Ready to Every Good Work
The final phrase gives the verse a broader purpose: “to be ready to every good work.”
Christianity is not merely about avoiding wrongdoing. Believers should actively look for opportunities to do good.
Being “ready” suggests an attitude of willingness. A Christian should not always wait for someone else to ask for help. Instead, believers should develop a heart that is prepared to serve, encourage, give, assist, forgive, and show compassion.
Good works do not earn salvation. The New Testament consistently teaches that salvation is rooted in God’s grace and received through faith. However, genuine faith should produce a changed life. Good works become evidence of a believer’s transformed character and a practical expression of love.
Titus 3:1 therefore presents a balanced picture of Christian living: respect authority, live peacefully, obey legitimate laws, and remain prepared to help others.
A Lesson About Christian Witness
One of the important themes surrounding Titus is Christian witness. Believers were living among people who were watching their behavior. Their conduct could either strengthen or weaken their testimony.
A Christian who constantly creates unnecessary conflict, refuses reasonable laws, mistreats officials, or ignores the needs of others can damage the reputation of the gospel. By contrast, a believer who is respectful, peaceful, responsible, and ready to serve can demonstrate the transforming power of God’s grace.
Titus 3:1 reminds Christians that their faith should be visible in everyday life. Worship is not limited to a church gathering. It also appears in how believers interact with government, neighbors, coworkers, family members, and strangers.
Practical Application of Titus 3:1
This verse provides several practical lessons.
First, respect legitimate authority. Christians should not develop a habit of disrespecting officials merely because they hold positions of authority.
Second, be responsible citizens. Faith should encourage honesty, responsibility, peace, and respect for the law.
Third, remember that God is the highest authority. Respect for government does not replace obedience to God. When human authority conflicts with God’s commands, faithfulness to God comes first.
Fourth, stay prepared to do good. Christians should actively search for opportunities to help people.
Fifth, let good works support Christian testimony. A person’s actions can demonstrate the practical effects of faith.
Ultimately, Titus 3:1 calls believers to live in a way that benefits society rather than constantly creating unnecessary conflict. Christians are called to be people who bring peace, responsibility, service, and goodness wherever they live.
“Put them in mind”
“to obey magistrates”
“to be ready to every good work.”
