Detailed Explanation in English

Revelation 21:4 is one of the most comforting promises in the Bible. It presents a beautiful picture of the future God has prepared for His people. The verse describes a time when suffering, death, grief, crying, and pain will no longer exist. Instead of the brokenness experienced in the present world, God promises complete restoration and lasting peace.

The verse begins with the words, “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.” This is a deeply personal image. Tears represent many forms of human suffering—loss, disappointment, loneliness, persecution, sickness, fear, and grief. Throughout life, people experience moments when words are not enough to express their sorrow. Revelation 21:4 assures believers that God sees those tears and that sorrow will not have the final word.

The picture of God wiping away tears also shows His compassion. God is not distant from human suffering. He promises a future in which the causes of tears will be removed. His comfort will be complete because the conditions that produce grief will no longer remain.

The verse continues, “and there shall be no more death.” Death is one of the greatest sources of sorrow in the present world. People lose parents, children, spouses, relatives, and friends. Even when death is expected, separation brings pain. Revelation presents a future where death itself will be removed. This promise is connected with the larger message of Revelation 21, where God makes all things new.

The absence of death means that God’s restored creation will not be subject to the same cycle of mortality and loss that characterizes the present world. Life with God will be permanent rather than temporary. The believer’s hope is therefore not simply that difficult circumstances will become easier; it is that God will ultimately establish a reality in which death has no place.

Next, the verse says, “neither sorrow, nor crying.” These words describe the emotional consequences of living in a broken world. Sorrow can come from many sources: bereavement, injustice, rejection, disappointment, poverty, conflict, and personal failure. Crying often becomes the outward expression of inward pain.

God’s promise goes beyond temporary relief. He promises an existence where the sources of sorrow and crying have been removed. This does not mean that present suffering is insignificant. Instead, it teaches believers that present suffering is not the final chapter. God is working toward a future where His people will experience complete restoration.

The verse then declares, “neither shall there be any more pain.” Pain is part of human experience, both physically and emotionally. People experience illness, injury, aging, anxiety, heartbreak, and many other forms of suffering. The promise of Revelation 21:4 is therefore extraordinarily comprehensive: the future God establishes will not contain the pain that characterizes life in the fallen world.

This promise gives Christian hope during difficult circumstances. When someone is experiencing suffering, this verse does not suggest that the pain should simply be ignored. Rather, it points toward God’s ultimate answer to suffering. The Bible acknowledges the reality of pain while also declaring that pain will not last forever.

The final phrase explains why all these things disappear: “for the former things are passed away.” The “former things” refer to the conditions belonging to the old order of creation—death, mourning, crying, and pain. They belong to a world that is passing away. God is bringing about something new.

This statement is important because it shifts the focus from merely repairing the old world to God’s promise of renewal. Revelation 21:1 speaks about a new heaven and a new earth, and the following verses describe God’s dwelling with His people. Revelation 21:4 therefore belongs to a larger vision of God’s restored creation.

There is also an important spiritual lesson in this verse. Human beings often look for lasting peace in circumstances, possessions, relationships, achievements, or worldly success. Yet none of these can permanently remove death, sorrow, or pain. Revelation directs our hope toward God Himself. The ultimate answer to human suffering is found in God’s presence and His promised restoration.

The verse can also encourage people who are grieving. Tears may be part of the present journey, but they are not evidence that God has forgotten His people. Revelation 21:4 gives a future-oriented hope: the day is coming when God will bring an end to the conditions that produce those tears.

This passage also reminds believers that God’s promises extend beyond the present life. The Christian hope is not simply to have a comfortable life in the present world. It is to live eternally in the presence of God, where the brokenness associated with the former order has been removed.

Revelation 21:4 is therefore a verse of hope, comfort, restoration, and eternal life. It acknowledges the reality of human suffering while declaring that suffering will ultimately be defeated. Death will not remain forever. Sorrow will not remain forever. Crying will not remain forever. Pain will not remain forever.

The final authority belongs to God, and His promise is that “the former things are passed away.” For those who trust in Him, this provides a powerful reason to persevere through present difficulties. The suffering of today is not the complete story. God’s promised future is greater than the pain of the present.
