English Explanation

Revelation 22:18 contains a serious warning concerning the words of biblical prophecy. The apostle John speaks with the authority of a witness and addresses “every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book.” The message is therefore not restricted to a particular group. Anyone who hears the prophetic words is called to treat them with reverence, honesty, and care.

The central warning is found in the words, “If any man shall add unto these things.” This does not merely warn against making a careless comment about Scripture. It speaks of deliberately adding to the revelation God has given. The verse teaches that God’s Word should not be manipulated to support personal ideas, ambitions, traditions, or predictions that contradict what God has revealed.

The Authority of God’s Word

Revelation presents itself as a divine message concerning the things God showed to John. Because the message comes from God, human beings do not have the authority to rewrite it according to their preferences. Scripture is not something that should be expanded or altered simply because someone wants to make it say something different.

This principle is important for anyone who studies the Bible. A responsible reader should distinguish between what the biblical text actually says and personal interpretation. Explanations can help people understand Scripture, but explanations should never be presented as though they were additional words from God.

What Does “Add Unto These Things” Mean?

The warning against adding to the prophecy can be understood as a warning against deliberately changing the revealed message. Someone could attempt to add teachings, claims, prophecies, or requirements and falsely present them as part of God’s revelation.

The danger is especially serious when a person claims, “God said,” when God has not said what the person is claiming. Such behavior can mislead others and distort the message of Scripture.

This verse therefore encourages humility. A Bible teacher should not place personal opinions above the biblical text. When Scripture is clear, it should be taught clearly. When a passage requires careful interpretation, the teacher should acknowledge that interpretation rather than pretending that a personal conclusion is unquestionably the direct statement of God.

“God Shall Add Unto Him the Plagues”

The consequence described in the verse is extremely serious: “God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book.” Revelation contains descriptions of divine judgment, including the judgments associated with rebellion against God. John warns that those who deliberately add to the prophetic message will face the judgment described in the book.

This language emphasizes the holiness of God’s revelation. Scripture should not be treated as material that can be manipulated without consequences.

The warning should also encourage readers to approach the Bible with reverence rather than fear of honest questions. Asking questions, studying difficult passages, comparing Scripture with Scripture, and seeking understanding are not the same as deliberately corrupting God’s Word. The warning is directed toward the serious act of adding to the prophecy.

A Lesson for Bible Teachers

Revelation 22:18 has a particularly important lesson for pastors, teachers, writers, and anyone who publicly explains Scripture. Teaching the Bible carries responsibility.

A teacher should avoid presenting speculation as biblical certainty. For example, when discussing prophetic symbolism, it is wise to distinguish between the biblical text and an interpretation of that symbolism. This protects readers from confusing human ideas with the actual words of Scripture.

Faithful Bible teaching should point people back to the biblical message rather than making the teacher’s personality, theories, or predictions the center of attention.

A Call to Faithfulness

The verse also reminds believers that God’s Word does not need human improvement. People may be tempted to add something because they believe Scripture is incomplete or because they want to make Christianity conform to their preferences. Revelation 22:18 gives the opposite lesson: receive God’s revelation faithfully.

The final chapters of Revelation point toward God’s ultimate victory, judgment, the defeat of evil, the New Jerusalem, the river of the water of life, and the hope of Christ’s return. The warning in verse 18 protects the integrity of this message.

Believers are therefore encouraged to read Revelation carefully and responsibly. Prophecy should not become an opportunity for sensationalism, manipulation, or unsupported predictions. Instead, it should strengthen faith, encourage holiness, and direct attention toward God and Jesus Christ.

The Importance of Context

Revelation 22:18 should also be read within its immediate context. The following verse continues the warning concerning taking away from the words of the book. Together, these statements emphasize the importance of preserving the prophetic message.

The broader conclusion of Revelation is not simply about punishment. It is also about hope. The book ends with an invitation to come, receive the water of life freely, and look forward to Christ’s return.

Thus, Revelation 22:18 should encourage a balanced approach to Scripture: do not add to God’s message, do not take away from it, and do not replace it with human speculation.

For modern Bible readers, this remains a valuable principle. We can study Scripture deeply while remaining humble about our interpretations. We can explain difficult passages without claiming more authority than the text itself gives us.

مکاشفہ 22:18 ایک نہایت سنجیدہ تنبیہ پیش کرتی ہے۔ یوحنا ہر اس شخص سے مخاطب ہوتا ہے جو اس کتاب کی نبوت کے الفاظ سنتا ہے۔ آیت کے الفاظ ہیں: “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book.”

“If any man shall add unto these things…”

“God shall add unto him the plagues”

“God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book.”
