Genesis 3:11 Commentary

Verse: And he said Who told thee that thou wast naked Hast thou eaten of the tree whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat

English Detailed Explanation

This verse captures a profound moment of divine confrontation following the first act of human disobedience. After Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, their immediate reaction was a sense of shame and a desire to hide from God. When Adam admits to hiding because of his nakedness, God responds with two penetrating questions.

  1. “Who told thee that thou wast naked?” God is not seeking information—as an omniscient Being, He already knows the answer. Instead, He is addressing the source of Adam’s new consciousness. Before the Fall, Adam and Eve were naked and unashamed because their focus was outward toward God and each other in perfect innocence. This question forces Adam to realize that his sudden sense of shame is not a natural development, but a result of a broken relationship and a corrupted nature.

  2. “Hast thou eaten of the tree…?” Here, God directly addresses the specific act of rebellion. He links Adam’s internal feeling (shame) to his external action (disobedience). By mentioning His previous command (“whereof I commanded thee”), God reminds Adam of the covenant and the boundary that was set. This question serves as an invitation for Adam to confess and take responsibility for his choice. It highlights the transition from a state of grace to a state of guilt.
