English Explanation
Revelation 11:5 describes the extraordinary authority given by God to the two witnesses during the prophetic events recorded in Revelation 11. These two witnesses are introduced as servants who prophesy during a difficult period and stand faithfully for God’s truth. The verse emphasizes that those who deliberately attempt to harm them will face divine judgment.
The statement, “if any man will hurt them,” shows that the witnesses will face opposition. Their ministry will not take place in a peaceful environment where everyone welcomes their message. Instead, they will proclaim God’s message while surrounded by hostility and resistance. Their enemies will want to silence them, but God will protect them until their appointed work is completed.
The phrase “fire proceedeth out of their mouth” is one of the striking images in the book of Revelation. It presents the witnesses as possessing supernatural authority. The fire represents God’s judgment and the power of the prophetic word. Throughout Scripture, fire is frequently associated with God’s holiness, judgment, and consuming power. In this passage, the imagery communicates that the witnesses are not ordinary messengers acting through their own strength. They operate under authority granted by God.
The verse says that the fire “devoureth their enemies.” This demonstrates the seriousness of opposing God’s appointed witnesses. The passage is not simply describing a disagreement between people. The witnesses are delivering a message connected with God’s purposes, and those who attempt to destroy them encounter judgment.
An important lesson is that God’s servants may face opposition without being abandoned by God. Faithfulness does not always mean that a believer will experience an easy life. Scripture repeatedly shows faithful people facing rejection, persecution, and hostility. Yet God remains sovereign over their circumstances.
The two witnesses therefore provide an example of courageous testimony. They continue their mission despite the hostility surrounding them. Their authority comes from God rather than from political influence, military strength, wealth, or human popularity.
The verse also teaches that God’s patience should not be mistaken for weakness. Human beings may resist God’s truth for a time, but Scripture presents God as the ultimate Judge. Revelation repeatedly points toward the final accountability of those who reject God’s authority.
It is also important to understand this passage within its symbolic and prophetic context. Revelation contains visions, symbols, dramatic imagery, and prophetic descriptions. Christians have interpreted the identity and ministry of the two witnesses in different ways throughout history. Some understand them as two literal prophetic individuals, while others see them as representing the faithful witness of God’s people. Regardless of the particular interpretation, the central message is clear: God empowers His witnesses and remains in control even when evil appears powerful.
The words “he must in this manner be killed” emphasize the certainty of judgment upon those who intentionally attack the witnesses. This should not be understood as permission for ordinary believers to seek revenge against their enemies. The passage describes a unique prophetic situation under God’s direct authority. Christians are not instructed here to imitate the witnesses by harming people who oppose them.
Instead, the passage points toward God’s justice. The final judgment belongs to God. The witnesses do not need to establish their authority through ordinary human violence because their authority is given directly by God.
Revelation 11:5 can therefore encourage believers to remain faithful when they encounter opposition. A person who stands for truth may sometimes feel powerless when facing criticism, hostility, or injustice. Yet the biblical message is that God’s purposes do not depend upon human approval.
There is another important connection between this verse and the following verses. Revelation 11:6 describes additional miraculous authority given to the witnesses, including power connected with shutting heaven and turning waters into blood. These signs resemble events associated with Moses and Elijah, leading many interpreters to see connections between the witnesses and Old Testament prophetic ministry.
The larger message of Revelation 11 is not merely about miraculous power. It is about faithful testimony in the midst of a rebellious world. The witnesses testify because God’s truth must be proclaimed. Their protection demonstrates that God’s mission cannot be stopped before the appointed time.
For modern readers, this passage encourages several spiritual lessons.
First, faithfulness is more important than popularity. God’s servants are not called to change the truth simply because people dislike hearing it.
Second, God gives strength for the assignment He gives. The witnesses receive extraordinary authority because their mission is extraordinary. Believers today should likewise depend upon God rather than their own abilities.
Third, opposition does not mean failure. The witnesses face enemies, but their ministry continues according to God’s purpose.
Fourth, God is the final Judge. When believers experience injustice, they do not need to take revenge. Scripture teaches them to trust God’s justice.
Finally, Revelation 11:5 points toward the ultimate triumph of God’s purposes. Evil may appear threatening, but it does not have the final word. God remains sovereign, and His truth cannot ultimately be defeated.
