English Explanation
Revelation 11:7 describes a dramatic moment in the prophetic ministry of the two witnesses. Before this verse, Revelation 11 presents two servants of God who receive authority to testify during a significant period of judgment. Their ministry is accompanied by remarkable signs, and they faithfully proclaim God’s message despite opposition.
The verse begins with the words, “when they shall have finished their testimony.” This phrase is extremely important. It indicates that the two witnesses have a divinely appointed mission and that their enemies cannot ultimately stop them until that mission has been completed. Their testimony does not end because their enemies become stronger. It ends when the purpose God has given them has been fulfilled.
This gives an important spiritual lesson about faithful service. Scripture repeatedly presents God’s servants as people who are called to remain faithful to their assignment. The two witnesses demonstrate courage in a hostile environment. Their testimony is not dependent upon the approval of the world. They continue proclaiming the truth until their appointed work is finished.
The verse then says that “the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit” will make war against them. The beast represents a powerful evil force that stands in opposition to God and His purposes. The expression “bottomless pit” is associated in Revelation with a realm connected with demonic and judgment imagery. The beast’s origin emphasizes the spiritual character of the opposition confronting the witnesses.
The phrase “shall make war against them” shows that their testimony provokes intense opposition. The conflict is not merely political or personal. Revelation presents a larger spiritual struggle between God’s purposes and rebellious forces opposed to Him. The witnesses represent faithful testimony, while the beast represents organized opposition to God’s authority.
The next words are striking: “and shall overcome them.” From an earthly perspective, it appears that evil has won. The witnesses are defeated by the beast. Their enemies may believe that their message has finally been silenced.
However, Revelation makes clear that apparent defeat does not mean ultimate defeat. The following verses reveal that the story does not end with their death. God raises the witnesses and demonstrates His authority over death and over the powers that opposed them. Therefore, Revelation 11:7 should be read within the larger context of Revelation 11.
The final phrase says that the beast will “kill them.” Their physical death demonstrates the seriousness of the conflict. Faithfulness to God does not always mean freedom from suffering or physical danger. Throughout Scripture, faithful servants sometimes experience persecution, imprisonment, suffering, and death.
Yet the death of the witnesses is not presented as God’s failure. Their testimony has already been completed. The beast can destroy their physical lives, but it cannot destroy the truth they proclaimed or cancel God’s ultimate purpose.
The Meaning of “Finished Their Testimony”
One of the most encouraging ideas in this verse is the concept of completed testimony. The witnesses do not simply exist; they testify. Their lives have a purpose centered on declaring God’s truth.
This principle can encourage believers today. Christian faithfulness should not be measured only by visible success. A person may faithfully serve God even when the results are not immediately visible. The witnesses apparently experience victory during their ministry, followed by persecution and death. Yet God’s purposes remain victorious.
The verse therefore teaches that God’s servants should focus on faithfulness rather than worldly recognition. The witnesses completed their testimony. That was the essential achievement.
The Beast and Opposition to God’s Truth
The beast’s attack also illustrates a recurring biblical reality: truth often encounters resistance. Whenever God’s message confronts human rebellion, there may be opposition.
Revelation uses powerful symbolic imagery to communicate this conflict. The beast is not simply an ordinary enemy. It belongs to the larger prophetic picture of powers that oppose God, His people, and His truth.
The passage therefore encourages readers not to be surprised when faithfulness produces opposition. Opposition does not necessarily mean that a ministry is unsuccessful. Sometimes resistance occurs precisely because the message challenges darkness, deception, injustice, or rebellion.
Apparent Defeat Is Not the Final Word
Revelation 11:7 is also important because it presents a temporary victory for evil. The beast overcomes and kills the witnesses, but this is not the conclusion of the account.
The next part of Revelation 11 shows God’s intervention. The witnesses are ultimately vindicated, demonstrating that the power of God is greater than the power of the beast.
This is an important biblical theme: evil may appear victorious for a time, but its victory is temporary.
The resurrection and vindication of the witnesses show that death cannot permanently defeat God’s purposes. Their testimony may be rejected by the world, their bodies may be destroyed, and their enemies may celebrate—but God remains sovereign.
A Lesson About Courage and Faithfulness
For believers, this verse provides a serious lesson about courage. Following God does not always produce an easy life. Faithfulness can involve sacrifice.
The two witnesses did not abandon their testimony when opposition appeared. They continued until their assignment was complete. Their example encourages believers to remain faithful even when circumstances are difficult.
The central message is not that Christians should seek suffering, but that they should not abandon truth merely because truth becomes costly.
Hope in God’s Sovereignty
Revelation 11:7 should also be understood in light of God’s sovereignty. The beast is powerful, but it is not ultimately sovereign. Its actions occur within the prophetic framework of Revelation.
The witnesses’ ministry has a beginning, a purpose, and an appointed completion. The beast attacks them only after they have “finished their testimony.” This wording emphasizes that evil does not have unlimited authority.
For Christians, this provides hope. Human history can sometimes appear chaotic, but Revelation teaches that God remains in control of the ultimate outcome.
“And when they shall have finished their testimony” — “اور جب وہ اپنی گواہی مکمل کر چکیں گے۔”
“the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit” — “وہ حیوان جو اتھاہ گڑھے سے نکلتا ہے۔”
“shall make war against them” — “وہ ان سے جنگ کرے گا۔”
