English Explanation

Revelation 11:17 is a powerful declaration of thanksgiving, worship, and recognition of the sovereign rule of God. The verse is spoken in the heavenly setting of Revelation, where the twenty-four elders worship God and acknowledge His eternal nature, unlimited power, and righteous reign. The verse points believers toward an important truth: God is sovereign over history, and His authority will ultimately be openly recognized by all creation.

“We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty”

The verse begins with thanksgiving. The heavenly worshippers say, “We give thee thanks.” This is significant because the book of Revelation contains many scenes of judgment, conflict, suffering, and opposition to God. Yet in the midst of these events, heaven responds with worship.

Thanksgiving is an expression of recognizing who God is and what He has done. The worshippers do not praise God merely because circumstances are easy. They praise Him because He is worthy and because His purposes are being accomplished.

The title “Lord God Almighty” emphasizes God’s supreme authority and unlimited power. He is not one ruler among many competing powers. He is the ultimate Lord over heaven, earth, nations, history, and eternity.

For Christians, this gives a strong foundation for faith. Human power may appear impressive for a season, but it is temporary. Political kingdoms rise and fall. Human leaders come and go. Wealth and influence change. God’s authority, however, remains secure.

“Which art, and wast, and art to come”

This expression emphasizes the eternal character of God. He “art”—He exists in the present. He “wast”—He existed in the past. He “art to come”—He is coming and remains Lord over the future.

The statement presents God as the eternal ruler whose existence is not limited by human history.

People experience time as a sequence: yesterday, today, and tomorrow. God is not limited in the way human beings are. His purposes extend throughout history, and His promises do not become obsolete.

This phrase also connects with one of the recurring themes of Revelation: God is eternal, and history is moving toward the fulfillment of His purposes.

For believers facing uncertainty, this is encouraging. The future may be unknown to us, but it is not unknown to God. The world can experience dramatic changes, but God’s authority remains unchanged.

“Because thou hast taken to thee thy great power”

The verse then declares that God has “taken to thee thy great power.”

This does not mean that God was previously powerless. Scripture consistently presents God as Almighty. Rather, the language points to the manifestation or open exercise of His sovereign authority.

God’s power has always existed, but Revelation describes a time when His rule is increasingly displayed and recognized.

Humanity often behaves as though people, governments, nations, wealth, military strength, or political authority determine the final outcome of history. Revelation presents a very different perspective. God remains the ultimate authority.

The phrase therefore directs attention away from temporary earthly powers and toward the eternal throne of God.

“And hast reigned”

The final statement is simple but profound: “and hast reigned.”

God reigns.

This is one of the central messages of Revelation. Even when evil appears powerful, it does not possess ultimate authority. Even when God’s people experience persecution, God’s throne has not been overthrown. Even when human history appears chaotic, God remains sovereign.

The announcement of God’s reign points toward the ultimate victory of His kingdom. The powers that oppose Him will not have the final word.

This truth should produce both confidence and humility. Confidence, because believers can trust God’s sovereignty. Humility, because no human authority can legitimately place itself above the Creator.

Thanksgiving in the midst of God’s kingdom

Revelation 11:17 also teaches believers something about worship. The heavenly worshippers respond to God’s work with thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is more than saying pleasant words. Biblical thanksgiving recognizes God’s character, His authority, His faithfulness, and His works.

A Christian can therefore give thanks even while living in an imperfect world. This does not mean ignoring suffering or pretending that evil does not exist. Instead, it means believing that suffering and evil will not ultimately defeat God’s purposes.

The verse gives believers a larger perspective. Present circumstances are not the entire story. God’s reign is greater than today’s difficulties.

What Revelation 11:17 teaches Christians today

This verse offers several important spiritual lessons.

First, God is worthy of thanksgiving.
Worship begins by recognizing God’s greatness rather than focusing exclusively on our circumstances.

Second, God is eternal.
His authority is not temporary. He was, He is, and He is to come.

Third, God possesses ultimate power.
Human beings can exercise authority, but all human authority is limited. God’s power is supreme.

Fourth, God reigns over history.
Revelation assures believers that history is not ultimately controlled by chaos or evil. God is working toward His purposes.

Fifth, believers can have hope.
The declaration that God reigns gives Christians confidence that evil will not have the final victory.

“Lord God Almighty”
