Detailed Explanation in English
Revelation 17:3 is one of the most symbolic and striking verses in the Book of Revelation. The verse describes a vision given to the apostle John in which an angel carries him “in the spirit” into a wilderness. There John sees a woman sitting upon a scarlet-colored beast. The beast is covered with names of blasphemy and has seven heads and ten horns.
This verse is part of a larger passage in Revelation 17 that explains the judgment of “Babylon the Great.” The imagery is highly symbolic, and the surrounding verses help interpret many of the symbols introduced here.
“So he carried me away in the spirit”
John says that he was carried away “in the spirit.” This indicates that John was receiving a supernatural vision. He was not simply observing an ordinary event in the physical world. God was revealing something significant through symbolic imagery.
The Book of Revelation frequently communicates heavenly truths through visions, signs, numbers, animals, crowns, lamps, beasts, and other symbols. Therefore, Revelation 17:3 should be approached carefully rather than assuming that every detail describes a literal physical creature or woman.
The phrase also reminds readers that spiritual understanding requires attention to the message behind the imagery. John was being shown something that represented a larger spiritual and worldly reality.
“Into the wilderness”
The wilderness is an important biblical setting. In Scripture, wilderness experiences can represent isolation, testing, judgment, or a place where God reveals something important.
Here, the wilderness becomes the setting for John’s vision of the woman and the beast. The contrast is significant: John is taken away from ordinary surroundings and shown a symbolic picture of a corrupt system associated with worldly power and rebellion against God.
The wilderness setting may also emphasize the desolate spiritual condition represented by the vision. The impressive appearance of the woman and beast does not mean that they possess God’s approval. Their outward power and splendor ultimately stand under divine judgment.
“And I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast”
The woman is one of the central figures in Revelation 17. Later verses identify her as “Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth” (Revelation 17:5).
The woman sitting on the beast presents an important picture of relationship and influence. The woman is associated with the beast’s power, while the beast represents a powerful system opposed to God.
The scarlet color is also significant. Scarlet can suggest luxury, wealth, royal appearance, power, and bloodshed. In Revelation 17, the imagery communicates something outwardly impressive but morally corrupt.
The woman appears powerful and influential, but her relationship with the beast ultimately leads toward judgment. Revelation therefore warns readers not to confuse worldly magnificence with righteousness.
“Full of names of blasphemy”
The beast is described as being “full of names of blasphemy.”
Blasphemy involves dishonoring God and treating what belongs to God with contempt. The description indicates that the beast represents rebellion against divine authority.
This is a recurring theme in Revelation. Human systems can become so proud and rebellious that they attempt to place themselves in opposition to God.
The verse therefore contains a warning about pride, false authority, and the rejection of God’s rule. A system may possess political influence, wealth, military strength, cultural influence, or religious appearance, yet none of these things can make rebellion against God acceptable.
The phrase “names of blasphemy” also suggests that the beast’s opposition to God is not hidden. Its character is fundamentally hostile to divine truth.
“Having seven heads”
The beast has seven heads, a symbol that receives further explanation later in Revelation 17. Revelation 17:9 says:
“The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.”
The same verse also says that the seven heads represent seven kings. Therefore, the imagery has multiple dimensions.
Throughout Revelation, symbolic numbers frequently communicate completeness, fullness, or an important theological pattern. The seven heads should therefore be understood within the interpretation supplied by the chapter itself rather than treated merely as a description of a strange animal.
The important message is that the power represented by the beast is organized, extensive, and connected with earthly authority.
“And ten horns”
The beast also has ten horns. Revelation 17 later explains that the ten horns represent ten kings who receive authority for a limited period and ultimately oppose the Lamb.
Horns in biblical symbolism often represent strength, authority, or power. Therefore, the ten horns communicate the idea of concentrated earthly power.
However, Revelation makes it clear that such power is temporary. The beast and the kings associated with it may appear powerful, but they cannot ultimately defeat Jesus Christ.
This is one of the most important lessons of the passage: earthly power is temporary, but God’s authority is eternal.
The relationship between the woman and the beast
The image of a woman sitting on the beast suggests a close relationship between corruption and worldly power. The woman is associated with spiritual unfaithfulness, immorality, luxury, and influence, while the beast represents hostile worldly authority.
The chapter later shows that this relationship does not remain stable forever. The very powers associated with the beast eventually turn against the woman. This demonstrates the unstable nature of sinful alliances.
Human beings may form powerful partnerships based on greed, ambition, control, or rebellion, but such alliances cannot provide lasting security. What is built against God’s truth eventually faces judgment.
A warning about worldly influence
Revelation 17:3 is not merely an interesting prophetic image. It contains a spiritual warning.
The woman appears influential, and the beast appears powerful. Together they create an image of enormous worldly authority. Yet the chapter ultimately reveals their defeat.
Christians are therefore encouraged to examine what they value. Wealth, political influence, popularity, power, luxury, and cultural acceptance can all become dangerous when they replace faithfulness to God.
The passage calls believers to spiritual discernment. Something can appear impressive while being spiritually corrupt. God’s people must therefore judge things according to God’s truth rather than outward appearance.
The ultimate victory belongs to Christ
Although Revelation 17 contains frightening imagery, the larger message of Revelation is one of hope. Evil does not win.
The beast, the woman, and the worldly powers connected with them face judgment. Revelation 17:14 declares that these powers will make war with the Lamb, “and the Lamb shall overcome them.”
The Lamb represents Jesus Christ. His victory demonstrates that no earthly kingdom, political authority, corrupt system, or spiritual rebellion can permanently oppose God’s purposes.
Therefore, Revelation 17:3 should not produce hopelessness. Instead, it should encourage believers to remain faithful. The apparent strength of evil is temporary, while the kingdom of Christ is everlasting.
