Introduction

2 Peter 3:5 addresses people who deliberately reject or ignore the truth about God’s work in creation and His future judgment. The apostle Peter is responding to scoffers who questioned the promise of the coming of Jesus Christ. They argued that everything had continued as it always had, so there was no reason to believe that God would intervene in history.

Peter explains that such people are “willingly ignorant.” This does not simply mean that they lack information. It describes a deliberate unwillingness to recognize an important truth. They choose to overlook what God has already done, particularly the creation of the heavens and the earth and the judgment associated with the Flood.

“For this they willingly are ignorant of”

The phrase “willingly are ignorant” is central to this verse. Peter is describing an attitude of the heart rather than an ordinary lack of knowledge.

A person can be ignorant because he has never been taught something. However, Peter describes people who have access to the truth but choose to disregard it because accepting it would challenge their assumptions.

This has an important spiritual lesson. People should not judge God’s promises only by what they currently observe. God’s actions are not limited to the ordinary patterns people see every day. The Bible presents God as the Creator who has acted decisively in history and who will act again according to His purpose.

“By the word of God”

Peter then points back to the word of God.

The heavens and the earth did not come into existence independently of God. Scripture presents creation as the result of God’s command and authority. God’s word is powerful because God Himself is powerful.

This teaches an important biblical principle: God’s word is not merely human advice or philosophical speculation. It reveals God’s purposes and His authority over creation.

The same God who spoke creation into existence is also capable of fulfilling His promises concerning judgment and the coming of Christ. Therefore, the apparent delay of God’s promise should never be interpreted as proof that the promise will fail.

“The heavens were of old”

Peter reminds his readers that the heavens have an ancient origin established by God.

Human beings observe the created universe, but they did not create it and cannot determine its ultimate purpose. The existence of creation itself points the reader toward the Creator.

The phrase also supports Peter’s larger argument. The world has not always existed in exactly the same condition. There has already been a major divine intervention in the history of the world.

Therefore, the scoffers’ argument that everything has continued exactly as it always has is fundamentally incomplete.

“The earth standing out of the water and in the water”

Peter refers to the earth in relation to water, using language connected with the biblical creation account.

Water is prominent in the early description of creation in Genesis. God established order within creation and separated the waters so that dry land appeared. Peter uses this history to remind his readers that the present world itself exists because of God’s creative command.

The wording also prepares the reader for the next verse, where Peter explains that the ancient world was destroyed by water in the Flood.

Thus, Peter’s argument develops in stages:

  1. God created the heavens and the earth.
  2. God established the world by His word.
  3. God has already intervened in human history.
  4. Therefore, people should not assume that the future will simply continue without divine intervention.

A warning against deliberate unbelief

This verse has a strong warning for modern readers. It is possible to become so accustomed to ordinary life that a person begins to assume that God will never intervene.

Peter challenges this mindset.

The fact that the sun rises, seasons change, people work, families grow, and generations pass does not mean that God’s promises have been cancelled. God’s apparent patience should not be confused with God’s absence.

The surrounding passage explains that God is patient and gives people opportunity to turn from sin. His patience is an expression of mercy, not evidence that His promises are empty.

Creation and God’s authority

2 Peter 3:5 also teaches that creation belongs to God.

Human beings may study the universe through science and observation, and such study can reveal many fascinating features of the created order. But Peter’s theological point is that creation ultimately depends upon God.

The heavens and earth are not independent authorities. They are part of God’s creation and remain subject to His purposes.

This gives believers confidence. If God has authority over creation itself, then He also has authority over history, judgment, salvation, and the fulfillment of His promises.

A lesson about God’s promises

One of the greatest lessons from this verse is that believers should not measure God’s faithfulness by human expectations.

The scoffers in Peter’s time expected God’s judgment to happen according to their own timetable. When it did not happen immediately, they treated the promise as though it were false.

Peter rejects that reasoning.

God’s timing is not the same as human timing. The Christian response is therefore not to abandon faith because fulfillment appears delayed, but to trust God’s character and His word.

Practical application

This verse encourages several practical responses.

First, value God’s word. The universe itself is presented as existing by God’s word, so believers have strong reason to take His revealed word seriously.

Second, beware of deliberate unbelief. Doubts and honest questions can be part of a person’s search for truth, but deliberately rejecting truth is different.

Third, remember God’s past works. Looking at what God has already done strengthens faith concerning what He has promised to do.

Fourth, do not confuse delay with failure. God’s patience does not mean that His promises have been forgotten.

Finally, live with spiritual readiness. Since God has authority over creation and history, people should live responsibly before Him rather than assuming that life will continue forever without accountability.

“For this they willingly are ignorant of”

“By the word of God”

“The heavens were of old”

“The earth standing out of the water and in the water”
