Detailed Explanation in English

Hebrews 1:3 stands as one of the most profound Christological statements in all of Holy Scripture. In a single verse, the divine author sets forth the person, nature, power, atonement, and supreme exaltation of Jesus Christ. Writing primarily to Jewish believers who were in danger of drifting back toward the Mosaic legal system, the writer demonstrates that Christ is infinitely superior to prophets and angels, functioning as the ultimate revelation of God.

1. “Who being the brightness of his glory”

The term translated as “brightness” (apaugasma in Greek) refers to the outshining or radiance that emanates from a light source. Just as light cannot be separated from the sun, the Son cannot be separated from the Father. Jesus Christ is not a created reflection like the moon; He is the intrinsic, eternal radiance of God’s glory. He reveals God fully to humanity because He possesses the exact divine nature and majesty of God.

2. “And the express image of his person”

The phrase “express image” (charakter) originally denoted an exact stamp or impression made upon wax or metal by a signet ring or die. “Person” (hypostasis) refers to essential substance or underlying reality. Thus, Christ is the exact character and representation of God’s real essence. To see Jesus is to see the exact nature of God. There is no moral or divine attribute in God the Father that is absent in Jesus Christ the Son.

3. “And upholding all things by the word of his power”

Jesus is not merely the Creator of the universe; He is its active Sustainer. The word “upholding” (pheron) implies carrying all created reality forward toward its ultimate divine destiny. He maintains physical laws, molecular cohesion, and the movement of the galaxies simply by “the word of his power”—His sovereign spoken command.

4. “When he had by himself purged our sins”

This clause addresses the high-priestly work of Christ. Unlike Old Testament priests who continually offered sacrifices that could never fully remove guilt, Jesus accomplished complete purification from sin “by himself” through His substitutionary death on the cross. His sacrifice was finished, unique, and totally sufficient, leaving no need for further sacrificial rituals.

5. “Sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high”

In the Old Testament tabernacle and temple, there were no chairs, because the priests’ work was never finished. In contrast, after offering His single, perfect sacrifice, Jesus “sat down”. Sitting signifies the completion of redemption and absolute rest from priest-work. Sitting at “the right hand of the Majesty on high” denotes the position of highest honor, sovereign dominion, and divine authority over all creation.

Detailed Explanation in Urdu
