Verse-by-Verse Commentary

Deuteronomy 1:1

Verse: These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness in the plain over against the Red sea between Paran and Tophel and Laban and Hazeroth and Dizahab

  • English Explanation: This verse establishes the setting. Moses is speaking to the entire nation of Israel while they are camped east of the Jordan River. It identifies specific geographical landmarks to anchor the historical reality of the event.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہ وہ الفاظ ہیں جو موسیٰؑ نے دریائے یردن کے اس پار بیابان میں تمام اسرائیل سے کہے۔ یہ مقام بحیرہ احمر کے سامنے فاران، توفل، لابن، حصیرات اور دی زہب کے درمیان واقع تھا۔ یہ آیت اس تاریخی پس منظر اور جگہ کی نشاندہی کرتی ہے جہاں یہ خطاب ہوا۔

Deuteronomy 1:2

Verse: (There are eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea.)

  • English Explanation: The author notes that the journey from Mount Sinai (Horeb) to the edge of the Promised Land should have only taken eleven days. This highlights the tragedy of the forty-year wandering caused by disobedience.

  • Urdu Explanation: حورب (سینا) سے قادیس برنیع تک کوہِ سعیر کے راستے صرف گیارہ دن کا سفر تھا۔ یہ اس بات کی طرف اشارہ ہے کہ منزل قریب تھی، مگر نافرمانی کی وجہ سے وقت طویل ہو گیا۔

Deuteronomy 1:3

Verse: And it came to pass in the fortieth year in the eleventh month on the first day of the month that Moses spake unto the children of Israel according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them

  • English Explanation: Moses delivers this message exactly forty years after the Exodus. He is acting as a faithful messenger, delivering only what God commanded.

  • Urdu Explanation: خروج کے چالیسویں سال، گیارہویں مہینے کی پہلی تاریخ کو موسیٰؑ نے بنی اسرائیل کو وہ سب احکامات سنائے جو خداوند نے انہیں دینے کا حکم دیا تھا۔

Deuteronomy 1:4

Verse: After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites which dwelt in Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei

  • English Explanation: This sets the timeline after the recent military victories over the Amorite kings. These victories served as proof that God was powerful enough to give them the rest of the land.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہ کلام اس وقت ہوا جب انہوں نے اموریوں کے بادشاہ سیحون اور بسن کے بادشاہ عوج کو شکست دے دی تھی۔ یہ فتوحات بنی اسرائیل کے ایمان کو مضبوط کرنے کے لیے تھیں۔

Deuteronomy 1:5

Verse: On this side Jordan in the land of Moab began Moses to declare this law saying

  • English Explanation: In the land of Moab, Moses begins to “expound” or explain the Law. Deuteronomy is not just a repetition of the law, but a deep explanation of its heart and application.

  • Urdu Explanation: دریائے یردن کے مشرقی حصے یعنی ملکِ موآب میں موسیٰؑ نے اس شریعت کی وضاحت کرنا شروع کی۔

Deuteronomy 1:6

Verse: The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb saying Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount

  • English Explanation: Moses recalls God’s command at Sinai. God told them it was time to move forward; they were not meant to stay at the mountain forever, but to possess the promise.

  • Urdu Explanation: خداوند نے حورب میں ہم سے کہا کہ تم اس پہاڑ پر کافی عرصہ ٹھہر چکے ہو۔ اب آگے بڑھنے کا وقت ہے۔

Deuteronomy 1:7

Verse: Turn you and take your journey and go to the mount of the Amorites and unto all the places nigh thereunto in the plain in the hills and in the vale and in the south and by the sea side to the land of the Canaanites and unto Lebanon unto the great river the river Euphrates

  • English Explanation: God defines the vast boundaries of the land promised to them, spanning from the plains to the great river Euphrates.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا نے انہیں حکم دیا کہ وہ کوچ کریں اور اموریوں، کنعانیوں اور لبنان کے تمام علاقوں پر قبضہ کریں، یہاں تک کہ دریائے فرات تک کا علاقہ ان کے سامنے تھا۔

Deuteronomy 1:8

Verse: Behold I have set the land before you go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob to give unto them and to their seed after them

  • English Explanation: The gift of the land is based on the covenant God made with the patriarchs. It is already “set before them”; they simply need to act in faith to take it.

  • Urdu Explanation: دیکھو، میں نے یہ زمین تمہارے سامنے کر دی ہے۔ جاؤ اور اس پر قبضہ کرو جس کا وعدہ میں نے تمہارے باپ دادا ابراہیمؑ، اسحاقؑ اور یعقوبؑ سے کیا تھا۔

Deuteronomy 1:9

Verse: And I spake unto you at that time saying I am not able to bear you myself alone

  • English Explanation: Moses admits his human limitations. Despite being a great leader, the weight of a whole nation was too much for one man.

  • Urdu Explanation: موسیٰؑ یاد دلاتے ہیں کہ انہوں نے اس وقت اعتراف کیا تھا کہ وہ اکیلے اس قوم کا بوجھ نہیں اٹھا سکتے۔

Deuteronomy 1:10

Verse: The LORD your God hath multiplied you and behold ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude

  • English Explanation: This confirms that God fulfilled His promise to Abraham—that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars.

  • Urdu Explanation: تمہارے خدا نے تمہیں اتنی برکت دی کہ آج تمہاری تعداد آسمان کے ستاروں کی مانند ہے۔

Deuteronomy 1:11

Verse: (The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are and bless you as he hath promised you!)

  • English Explanation: A parenthetical prayer by Moses, showing his love for the people. He desires God to increase them even more.

  • Urdu Explanation: موسیٰؑ دعا کرتے ہیں کہ خدا تمہیں اس سے بھی ہزار گنا زیادہ بڑھائے جیسا کہ اس نے وعدہ کیا ہے۔

Deuteronomy 1:12

Verse: How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance and your burden and your strife?

  • English Explanation: Leadership involves dealing with complaints (cumbrance), responsibilities (burden), and legal disputes (strife).

  • Urdu Explanation: موسیٰؑ کہتے ہیں کہ میں اکیلا تمہارے جھگڑوں اور تمہاری ذمہ داریوں کا بوجھ کیسے اٹھا سکتا ہوں؟

Deuteronomy 1:13

Verse: Take you wise men and understanding and known among your tribes and I will make them rulers over you

  • English Explanation: Moses introduces a democratic element by asking the tribes to select their own leaders based on wisdom and reputation.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے مشورہ دیا کہ اپنے قبائل میں سے سمجھدار اور تجربہ کار آدمی چنو تاکہ میں انہیں تمہارے اوپر حاکم مقرر کروں۔

Deuteronomy 1:14

Verse: And ye answered me and said The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do

  • English Explanation: The people agreed with the plan for a shared leadership structure.

  • Urdu Explanation: لوگوں نے اتفاق کیا کہ یہ ایک اچھا مشورہ ہے اور اس پر عمل کرنا چاہیے۔

Deuteronomy 1:15

Verse: So I took the chief of your tribes wise men and known and made them heads over you captains over thousands and captains over hundreds and captains over fifties and captains over tens and officers among your tribes

  • English Explanation: Moses organized the government into a hierarchy, ensuring that every level of society had oversight and order.

  • Urdu Explanation: چنانچہ موسیٰؑ نے قبائل کے سرداروں اور دانا لوگوں کو چن کر انہیں ہزاروں، سینکڑوں، پچاسوں اور دسوں کے اوپر افسر مقرر کر دیا۔

Deuteronomy 1:16

Verse: And I charged your judges at that time saying Hear the causes between your brethren and judge righteously between every man and his brother and the stranger that is with him

  • English Explanation: Judges were commanded to be fair to everyone, including foreigners (strangers). Justice was to be universal.

  • Urdu Explanation: موسیٰؑ نے ججوں کو حکم دیا کہ وہ اپنے بھائیوں کے درمیان انصاف سے فیصلہ کریں اور غیر ملکیوں کے ساتھ بھی عدل کریں۔

Deuteronomy 1:17

Verse: Ye shall not respect persons in judgment but ye shall hear the small as well as the great ye shall not be afraid of the face of man for the judgment is God’s and the cause that is too hard for you bring it unto me and I will hear it

  • English Explanation: Judicial impartiality is emphasized. Judges should not be intimidated by the powerful because they are ultimately representatives of God’s justice.

  • Urdu Explanation: عدالت میں کسی کی طرفداری نہ کرنا۔ امیر اور غریب دونوں کو برابر سننا اور کسی انسان سے نہ ڈرنا، کیونکہ انصاف خدا کی طرف سے ہے۔

Deuteronomy 1:18

Verse: And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do

  • English Explanation: Moses provided a complete set of instructions for their conduct and governance.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس وقت موسیٰؑ نے تمام ضروری احکامات بنی اسرائیل کو سمجھا دیے۔

Deuteronomy 1:19

Verse: And when we departed from Horeb we went through all that great and terrible wilderness which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites as the LORD our God commanded us and we came to Kadesh-barnea

  • English Explanation: They moved from the place of receiving the Law (Horeb) through a harsh wilderness to the threshold of the land (Kadesh-barnea).

  • Urdu Explanation: پھر وہ حورب سے روانہ ہوئے اور اس خوفناک بیابان سے گزرتے ہوئے قادیس برنیع پہنچے، جیسا کہ خدا نے حکم دیا تھا۔

Deuteronomy 1:20

Verse: And I said unto you Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites which the LORD our God doth give unto us

  • English Explanation: Moses reminds them of the encouraging words he spoke when they arrived—the goal was within reach.

  • Urdu Explanation: موسیٰؑ نے ان سے کہا کہ اب تم اس پہاڑی علاقے میں پہنچ گئے ہو جو خدا ہمیں دینے والا ہے۔

Deuteronomy 1:21

Verse: Behold the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee go up and possess it as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee fear not neither be discouraged

  • English Explanation: A call to courage. God had already granted the land; the only thing required from the people was a lack of fear.

  • Urdu Explanation: دیکھو، تمہارے خدا نے زمین تمہارے سامنے رکھ دی ہے۔ ڈرو مت اور ہمت نہ ہارو، بلکہ آگے بڑھ کر اس پر قبضہ کرو۔

Deuteronomy 1:22

Verse: And ye came near unto me every one of you and said We will send men before us and they shall search us out the land and bring us word again by what way we must go up and into what cities we shall come

  • English Explanation: The people suggested sending spies. While this seemed practical, it eventually led to a lack of faith when the spies returned with a negative report.

  • Urdu Explanation: لیکن لوگوں نے کہا کہ پہلے ہم جاسوس بھیجیں گے تاکہ وہ ہمیں بتائیں کہ راستہ کیسا ہے اور شہر کیسے ہیں۔

Deuteronomy 1:23

Verse: And the saying pleased me well and I took twelve men of you one of a tribe

  • English Explanation: Moses agreed to the request and selected one representative from each of the twelve tribes.

  • Urdu Explanation: موسیٰؑ کو یہ بات پسند آئی اور انہوں نے ہر قبیلے سے ایک ایک آدمی چن کر بارہ آدمی روانہ کیے۔

Deuteronomy 1:24

Verse: And they turned and went up into the mountain and came unto the valley of Eshcol and searched it out

  • English Explanation: The spies carried out their mission, reaching the fertile valley of Eshcol to evaluate the land’s resources.

  • Urdu Explanation: وہ روانہ ہوئے اور اشکول کی وادی تک گئے اور اس سرزمین کا جائزہ لیا۔
